Dr. Achilles Ploumidis MD, BSc, MSc, PhD, FEBU
Surgeon Urologist Athens Institute of Robotic & Endoscopic Urology
Athens Medical Center Athens, Greece
Dr. Achilles Ploumidis graduated from the Medical School of the University of
Athens (UOA). He completed his residency (General Surgery and Urology) at the
“Asklepeion Voulas” General Hospital. During his residency he was also trained in
Pediatric Urology at the Children's Hospital "Aghia Sophia" and in Gynecology at the
General Hospital of Athens "G. Gennimatas". He then became a Fellow of the
European Board of Urology (FEBU).
He graduated from the two-year postgraduate program of the Medical School of
Athens: "Minimally Invasive Surgery, Robotic Surgery and Telesurgery" with
excellent grade. In 2013 he defended his thesis at the Medical school of Athens and
he received his PhD degree with excellent grade.
He was trained at the University Oncology Center "Karolinska Institutet" of
Sweden in robotic surgery with scholarship from the Hellenic Urological Association
after written exams. There he specialized in robotic surgery of the lower urinary tract
(prostate, bladder, pelvic lymph nodes) under the supervision of Prof. Peter Wiklund,
while at the same time undertook clinical research for prostate cancer.
He was further trained in robotic surgery of the upper urinary tract (kidney,
ureter) and Urogynaecology at OLV Vattikuti Robotic Surgery Institute in Belgium,
under the supervision of Prof. Alexander Mottrie, with a scholarship from the Euro-
pean Robotic Urological Association (ERUS). He participated in many research and
clinical programs in the filed of urogynecology and single site robotic surgery.
During that time he was also an instructor in robotics and laparoscopic surgery at
ORSI Robotic Training Center, a position that he holds until today.
He completed a fellowship program in endourology and flexible ureteroscopy at
the Tenon Hospital, Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris with a scholarship from
the European Society of Urology (EAU), under the supervision of Prof. Olivier
Traxer. During that period he published many research papers regarding upper tract
urothelial carcinoma and stone management.
He has been visiting the University Urological Department of Ghent and the
"Sava Perovic Foundation" in Belgrade, in order to retrain in pediatric urology,
urethral surgery and plastic surgery of the genitalia.
Every year, he is invited as instructor in robotic surgery to train urologists in the
International Workshop in Robotic Surgery for Southeastern Europe (SEERSS), in
the annual congress of the European Association of Urology (EAU-HOT Robotic
Courses), in the European Robotic Urologic Symposiums (ERUS-HOT Robotic
Courses) and in the European Multidisciplinary meeting on Urological Cancer
(EMUC-HOT Robotic Courses)
He teaches at the Medical School of Athens University in the postgraduate
Master course "Minimal Invasive Surgery, Robotic Surgery and Telesurgery" and he
is responsible for the clinical and hands-on-training of physicians in robotic surgery.
He is invited every year to national congresses abroad as representative of the
European Association of Urology (EAU) to give lectures as part of the European
School of Urology (ESU Courses). He is been frequently invited as a faculty to
lecture at conferences on robotic surgery and endourology in Greece and Europe.
He participated as faculty and trainer in the first robotic hands-on course for
Pediatric Urology in Europe that took place in the ORSI Training Center in Belgium.
He continues to collaborate in developing a basic and advanced educational program
in Robotic Pediatric Urology at ORSI academy.
Every year (since 2013) he is invited as an instructor in flexible ureteroscopy at
the European Urology Residents Education Program (EUREP). During this program,
the residents are being prepared in order to obtain their certificate of the Fellow of the
European Association of Urology (FEBU).
Over the last few years he has been focusing in introducing and establishing
clinical robotic programs in different hospitals in Cyprus and Romania (official
proctor of the robotic company).
He has been honored with best paper award at the annual European Congress of
Urology (EAU) for his clinical research in prostate cancer (Surgical approaches for
prostate cancer 28th Annual EAU Congress, Milan 2013). He has also received best
paper award from the European Society of Robotic Surgery (ERUS) for comparing
robotic and open surgery (Junior European Robotic Urologic Symposium (ERUS)
2011). In 2016, during the annual meeting of the EAU section of Genito-Urinary
Reconstructive Surgeons (ESGURS16) he was honored with the first prize for his
video presentation.
In 2017 he was honored to accept the invitation of the European Association of
Urology to participate in a competition for specialized Urologists known as
“Challenge the Experts”. During this competition he was awarded with the second
prize from an academic board of the European Association of Urology based on his
presentations, publications, deep and profound knowledge in different areas of
expertise and surgical skills.
He is a member of the robotic group of the Young Academic Urologists (YAU),
officially recognized by the European Association of Urology as a group of leading
young urologists in their field. The aim of the group is to conduct multicenter trials
and research protocols regarding robotic surgery.
He is a founding member of the Greek Society for Reproductive Medicine,
which is dedicated to advancing knowledge and clinical expertise in the field of
assisted reproduction.
He has been involved in basic and clinical research for prostate and bladder
cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia, robotic surgery, stone surgery and endourology.
He has published articles in international and Greek medical journals with high
impact factor while he has authored chapters in international textbooks on robotic
surgery. He is a reviewer in (7) international scientific journals and he actively
continues his research activities in collaboration with foreign and Greek universities
He is a full time consultant at the Athens Institute of Robotic & Endoscopic
Urology at the Athens Medical Group.
