Website: http://www.dutchneckpresbyterian.com SEPTEMBER 2013 #533
Executive Summary:
4 out of 6 candidates have
been interviewed as of Aug.
13, 2013.
Your DPNC has been
working hard and making
progress. As most of you
know, the Presbytery is
allowing our church to seek a
“designated” pastor this time,
rather than the much more
common “installed” pastor,
which typically involves a 1 or
2 year “interim” period. A
Designated Pastor can be
hired for a certain period, two
years in our case, and then
can be made an Installed
Pastor, have the Designated
status extended, or a new
person may be hired. In the
Designated Pastor process,
the Presbytery’s Committee
on Ministry (COM) pre-
screens candidates who match
up with our Church
Information Form (CIF). The
first job of the DPNC was to
update our CIF, which needed
only a few changes from the
more extensive process 3
years ago. After this was
approved by the COM and
our Session, a subcommittee
of COM, along with Bill Davis
and Bart Kartoz, evaluated
the applications of nearly 30
candidates. It was decided
that 4 local and 2 non-local
candidates would be
recommend to the Dutch
Neck DPNC.
The DPNC consists of Bill
Davis, Bob Dix, Paul Hamm,
Bart Kartoz, Annabelle Kim,
Donna Kramer, Pat Tantum
and Merry Van Dyke. They
are pleased that we have
more than one excellent
candidate from which to
choose. We don’t know
yet when a new pastor
will start, as everyone’s
current obligations (like
giving notice to their current
congregation) are different.
The Rev. Debbie Davis will
continue to provide pastoral
care for things like weddings,
funerals, baptisms, personal
crises, etc. The church’s
Session may ask Presbytery
to give us a short term
interim, if it looks like the
new pastor will not arrive
early in the church year. We
realize we all want this
process to move quickly, but
we must not rush. In any
case, we will not have a
Designated Pastor on board
as we start our church year,
but we are confident (and
even excited) that we will
have a great year as many
people are stepping forward
and pitching in where they
can. We are making
concrete what is says on
the back of our bulletins:
“Ministers: the entire
congregation.” And
whatever you do, continue
to pray for all involved in
this process and for the
future of ministry at
Dutch Neck.
If you have questions
or concerns about
this process, feel free to
contact one of the co-
chairs, Bill or Bart, or
anyone on the DPNC.

Is the summer over? Al-
ready?!? There’s some really
good news though moving
into the month of September
here at Dutch Neck Church!
We have two new staff
members who will be work-
ing directly with our children
and youth programs.
Zachary Gates is our Chil-
dren’s Choir Director. He is
a junior at Westminster
Choir College who is major-
ing in early childhood educa-
tion. He is currently in his
hometown on Long Island
running the music program
at Woodmere Camp. Zacha-
ry has been accepted into
the Westminster 5 year pro-
gram so he will have his mas-
ter’s upon graduating in
three years. He is quite a
musician in his own right and
will be leading the Open
Door Service music on Sun-
days on guitar. If you happen
to see a new face in church
in late August, it may be
Zachary.
Ben Johnson is our Youth
Leader and Sunday School
Director. Ben has been
working extensively with
youth in many capacities.
Most recently he has been
facilitating the Nassau Presby-
terian Youth program, led
small groups at the Presbyter-
ian Triennium
and at the end
of July, went to
Montreat with
the Nassau Pres.
Youth. He is a
long time member of Nassau,
having attended their youth
program as a teen. He will be
working with our parent vol-
unteers to get the Confirma-
tion program started this fall.
Read your bulletins for infor-
mation about organizational
meeting dates and times.
Feel free to give them one of
our famous Dutch Neck
welcomes!
Ministries Fair is BACK. It will
be held on Sunday, Septem-
ber 8th during Fellowship
time. Please come ready to
chat with our new staff and
to sign your children up for
Sunday School and/or choir
and for those activities and
groups you feel called to join.
Youth members will want to
meet and check out Ben may-
be even ask a few questions
during this time too! It is so
On the 4th Wednesday
of the month, a group
meets at the Christian
Education building at
9:20 AM to deliver food
and assist at the TASK
until approximately 1:00
PM. Our next outing will
be Wednesday, September
25.

Bad News -- Good news
Vacations are over, but . . .
Knitters and crocheters
(a.k.a. World Sewing) will
meet Tuesday, September 3
at 10:00 am, upstairs in the
CE building. All “busy
fingers” are welcome! So,
just bring a sandwich,
needles or hooks, and share
your patterns and new ideas.
KNITTERS AND CROCHETERS
We’ll provide coffee/tea,
dessert, yarn, and friendship.
For more information, contact
Joan Eddinger at 799-0003.
WORSHIP COMMITTEE exciting to feel the holy spirit
alive and generating new ide-
as here in our congregation
again.
Worship and
Music Commit-
tee meeting will
be on Saturday,
September 7th at
10am in the church meeting
room by the offices.
Just so you know the Open
Door committee has asked
to be a subcommittee of
Worship and Music. That
makes total sense to me since
it is worship, in our church,
on Sundays! If anyone is feel-
ing called to be a part of
working with Don Hanley, Bill
Davis, Trish Miele and others
on this shorter and more
relaxed church service, please
contact Don. That service
will resume on September
15th to give everyone time to
attend the Ministries Fair on
the 8th.
The DPNC and our Presby-
tery are busy at work
reviewing candidates for our
Designated Pastor opening.
The Sunday preachers will be
announced weekly in the
email Robbin sends out.
Having Nancy back to preach
has been a real treat. There
was a cake and card for her
last Sunday during Lemonade
under the trees. She was
touched by our acknowledg-
ment and the deep apprecia-
tion expressed by everyone
there for her sharing her
preaching gift with us this
summer.
A BIG THANK YOU goes
out to Skip Williams for his
amazing work with the
sound system and for provid-
ing recordings of our Sunday
worship. The assisted listen-
ing devices are all working,
we can listen to sermons we
missed online, and he does it
all with his trademark big
smile! Thank you so much
Skip.
So . . . welcome back every-
one. Welcome Home to
Dutch Neck Presbyterian
Church. We hope to see you
and share a big hug!
Warmly,
Trish Miele

CROP Walk
October 13, 2013 at 2 pm
This year's CROP Walk
benefiting Church World
Service will be held
on October 13 at
Mercer County
Park. The walk will
start and end at the
East Picnic
Area. The CROP Walk is an
opportunity for family, friends
and neighbors to walk together
to take a stand against hunger
in our world. Together we
raise awareness and funds for
international relief and
development, as well as local
hunger relief programs.
Some 2,000 communities across
the country take part each
year. In the last 20 years, CROP
Walks have raised more than
$294 million to help people
struggling to feed their families –
both around the world
and around the corner. In fact,
25 percent of the funds
raised by CROP Hunger
Walks benefit the
communities where
they take place, by
supporting local food
banks, pantries, community
gardens and other hunger relief
initiatives. To sign up to walk or
donate, please contact Christen
Foell at 609-751-2000 or
[email protected]. You may
also sign up and pledge on-line at
www.cwsglobal.com. Look for

BOOK CLUB
The Memorial, Planned and
Special Gifts Committee is
pleased to announce the
acquisition of 25 copies of
Psalms for All Seasons: A
Complete Psalter for Worship.
The Psalters were requested
by Gail Lee, Director of
Music, and the Worship
Committee. The purchase of
the Psalters was made
possible by a special gift from
Bob Thomson.
This Psalter, edited by
Martin Tel, is designed to
promote the faithful and
fruitful use of the psalms in
worship. To quote the
introduction of the book, it
“arises out of a sense of
wonder at the psalms’
spiritual vitality, rugged
beauty, and enduring
pastoral relevance for
communities all over the
PSALMS FOR ALL SEASONS:
A COMPLETE PSALTER FOR WORSHIP
world.” These Psalters will be
put in the hands of
our choir. (Look
for the bright blue
book with an image
of a tree on its
cover!) Some of
these books may be
carted through the
Christian Education building
where they can be used in
prayer groups and for opening
devotions at church meetings.
(Brief prayer services and
litanies are included in the
book.) The books will also be
part of the worship resource
library used by our worship
planners. The book of Psalms
is the prayer book of the
Bible. Our hope is that these
psalms will permeate and
enrich our worship, praise and
prayer. [For more information

“Delicious autumn! My very soul
is wedded to it, and if I
were a bird I would fly
about the earth seeking
the successive autumns.” —George Eliot
Once again the generosity and
support of our congregation
made it possible for 50 children
(ranging in age from 2 1/2 to 13
years) to start off their school
year with new backpacks and
supplies. The Deacons would
like to thank everyone who
helped make the backpack drive
for the Children’s Home
Society a great success!
DEACON’S BACKPACK DRIVE OFFICE HOURS
The church office hours have returned to the following:
Monday through Friday
8:30 - 3:30 pm
Mark you calendars and spread the word!
First day for our Open Door Service is
Sunday, September 15 at 11:15 AM
NURSERY SCHOOL HAPPENINGS - SEPTEMBER 2013
September is here and we are so
excited to be getting back to
school! The first week of school
will kick off with our back to
school meeting on September 10th
at 7:30 pm. The first day of school
will begin on September 11th. As
always, the staff is working hard to
get classrooms and curriculum
ready for a new wave of
students. We can’t wait to hear
the hallways full of excited and
nervous chatter, friendly post-
summer greetings and shuffling of
feet to vie for the perfect spot in
circle time!
We go into our 3rd year of our
Kindergarten Extension – it is a
great, curriculum based program
for parents who are looking to
enhance their child’s half-day
kindergarten experience. It is
offered in both a morning and
afternoon session, 3 or 4 days a
week. There are still openings if
you know a kindergartener who
might be interested in some extra
fun and learning!
This year we are happy to offer
many new and exciting enrichment
classes, allowing children to extend
their school day or add an
additional day. These classes are
Science 123, Dutch Neck Players
and Top Chefs.
There still are limited openings in
some of the classes. If you know of
someone who is still looking for a
nursery school please tell them
about the Dutch Neck Presbyterian
Church Cooperative Nursery
School and invite them to call and
visit the school. DNPCCNS offers
a caring, positive, developmentally
appropriate environment in which
preschoolers can grow. As we
build a bridge from home to
school, we help children form
social skills, explore the world
around them, and see themselves
as active and capable learners, all of
which contribute to a strong self-
image. We will be hosting an
OPEN HOUSE on
Saturday October
26th from 9:30-11:00am.
Staff members,
Executive Board
Members and parents
will be on hand to
answer questions.
The Fall always brings a rush and
flurry of activities and excitement
and we can’t wait to share it with
you!
Sincerely,
Kim Kelly, Administrative Director
