The Worship of God February 22, 2009

Welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus! If you are a guest with us, please be sure

to sign our Registry when it is passed during the service. Children are welcome in

our worship. We have a nursery available for children 3 and under. Children not yet

in kindergarten will be dismissed prior to the sermon. Thank you for joining us

today and may the Lord richly bless you.

Welcome and Preparation for Worship

The missionary problem is a personal one. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Author and

Leader of Missions. Whoever stands right with Him, and abides in Him, will be

ready to know and do His will. It is simply a matter of being near enough to Him to hear

His voice, and so devoted to Him and His love as to be ready to do all His will. – Andrew Murray

Call to Worship1 Psalm 29:1-2

Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and

strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; worship the LORD in the

splendor of holiness.

Hymn of Praise2

O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing Wesley

O for a thousand tongues to sing,

My great Redeemer's praise,

The glories of my God and King,

The triumphs of His grace.

My gracious Master and my God,

Assist me to proclaim,

To spread thro'all the earth abroad,

The honors of Thy name.

Jesus! the Name that charms our fears,

That bids our sorrows cease,

Tis music in the sinner's ears,

Tis life and health and peace.

He breaks the power of reigning sin,

He sets the prisoner free;

His blood can make the foulest clean,

His blood availed for me.

Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb,

Your loosened tongues employ;

Ye blind, behold your Savior come;

And leap, ye lame, for joy.

1 We believe that God always initiates with sinners, so we begin worship with his invitation

and command to us to gather in his name.

2 All songs used by permission or covered under CCLI license # 391165.

Confession of Faith from Colossians 1:15-18

(Christ) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him

all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones

or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for

Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the

head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that

in everything He might be preeminent.

I Am the Lord Your God

When you pass through the waters I will be with you,

And the waves will not overcome you, do not fear.

For I have redeemed you,

I have called you by name you are mine.

For I am the Lord Your God, (I am Lord your God)

I am the Lord your God, (I... Am)

The Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

I am the Lord, (Do not fear.)

I am the Lord, (Do not fear.)

I am the Lord, (Do not fear.)

I am the Lord. (Do not fear.)

When you pass through the fire you’ll not be burned

And the flames will not consume you, do not fear.

For I have redeemed you,

I have called you by name you are mine.

Call to Confession of Sin Romans 3:20

For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since

through the law comes knowledge of sin.

Corporate Confession of Sin The Ten Commandments

Leader: O LORD, our God who brought His people out of Egypt, out of the land of

slavery and by Christ delivered us from sin, You have been faithful to keep all the

promises of Your covenant.

People: But we, O LORD, have been a stiff-necked people who love

unfaithfulness.

We have loved other gods before you and become their servants.

We have not worshipped you in spirit and in truth, and so we have mocked your

glory in heaven.

We have used your name in vain and profaned your reputation on earth.

We have desecrated your Sabbath because we have not trusted you to give us rest.

We have not honored our fathers and mothers, and so we have proved ourselves

rebels.

We have hated our neighbors and murdered them in our hearts.

We have made adulterers of ourselves in the lust of our eyes or in the deeds of our

flesh.

We have stolen honor and wealth and privileges that are not ours.

We have lied and falsely accused for we love gossip more than truth.

We have coveted blessings you wisely and righteously gave to others.

O LORD, have mercy on us for we have not kept your law.

Assurance of Pardon in Christ Psalm 34:22

The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast

love. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our

iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His steadfast

love toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does He

remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so

the LORD shows compassion to those who fear Him.

God of Wonders Byrd

Lord of all creation of water, earth and sky;

The heavens are Your tabernacle.

Glory to the Lord on high!

God of wonders beyond our galaxy,

You are holy, holy.

The universe declares Your Majesty.

You are holy, holy.

Lord of Heaven and earth, Lord of Heaven and earth.

Early in the morning I will celebrate the light,

When I stumble in the darkness,

I will call your name by night.

Hallelujah to the Lord of Heaven and earth.

Hallelujah to the Lord of Heaven and earth.

Hallelujah to the Lord of Heaven and earth.

You are holy, holy.

God of wonders beyond our galaxy,

You are holy, holy.

Precious Lord, reveal Your heart to me.

Father, hold me, hold me.

The universe declares Your Majesty.

You are holy, holy, holy, holy!

Offering

Sermon3 Rev. Elliott Greene

The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper A Word About Communion – The bread and juice you see on the Communion

table may not look like much to the casual observer. In fact, it is merely bread and

juice. What makes this meal special is that the Lord Jesus Christ is spiritually present

in a unique way. This sacrament is not something to be taken lightly but neither is it

a time to be somber; rather, we should be filled with thankfulness and joy. Our

Savior, out of His great mercy, bids His people to come to this meal. If you are a

member of a church who embraces the Gospel of Jesus Christ and are at peace with

your fellow Christians, we welcome you to this table. Come and consider with us our

Lord’s body and shed blood symbolized in the bread and juice. Rejoice with us in

our union with Him and with each other as His Covenant people. For those not

taking Communion today, we encourage you to carefully think on the prayers found

in the section entitled: “Prayers for Those Not Communing”, and we look forward to

the day when you may join us in this meal.

Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah Williams

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land.

I am weak, but Thou are mighty; Hold me with Thy powerful hand.

Bread of heaven, Feed me now and evermore;

Bread of heaven, Feed me now and evermore.

Open now the crystal fountain, Whence the healing waters flow;

Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through.

Strong Deliverer, be Thou still my Strength and Shield;

Strong Deliverer, be Thou still my Strength and Shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside;

Death of death, and hell’s destruction, land me safe on Canaan’s side.

Songs of praises I will ever give to Thee;

Songs of praises I will ever give to Thee.

Benediction4

3 4, 5, & 6-year-old children may be dismissed before the sermon to Godly Play in room 173.

4 Just as God has the first word in worship, he also has the last word. For those who are in

Christ Jesus, these are always words of blessing. We look up and extend our hands out in a

posture of receiving the blessing of God.

Prayers of Meditation for Those Not Communing

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth

Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be

undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what

you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you

are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to

the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer of Belief

Heavenly Father, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before

believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever

dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt

and punishment I owed. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and

receive Him as Savior. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin

Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn

from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to

lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before

me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer of Commitment

Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed

discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with

your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.
