    Defining Households by Income

The McKinsey study divides MMR households into five categories by income. Those

households with less than INR90K annual income (11%) fall below the poverty line.

Those with household incomes between INR90K and INR200K (42%) are considered

to be poor. Households are considered to be middle class if they fall between the

    INR200K to INR1000K range (44% + 2% or 46%). The wealthy, those with a

household income of more than INR1000K, only constitute about 1 percent of total

    households.
