Anyone who has everwondered how a city growsneed only take a walk down

104 Avenue in the next fewmonths. It may not look like much

now, but by 2017 Edmontonsdowntown core will havealmost $2 billion worth of newdevelopments. That kind oflarge-scale building means104 Avenue will never look thesame again.

This is a key project thatwill have a major impact onthe ongoing transformationhappening right here inthe heart of our city, saidEdmonton Mayor Don Ivesonthis week, announcing that thedowntown arena, at 104 Street, was on budget and ready tobegin construction.

It will build a vibrancy inour downtown that does not

exist today but is starting totake off.

The arena is only one ofthree large projects to be goingup in the area in the next fewyears.

Down the street, the federaland provincial governmentshave put $340.5 million intothe new site for the Royal

Alberta Museum, which isgoing to be moved from itspresent location in Glenora.

Just across from the arenawill be a $300-million officetower being built to house athird of the citys downtownemployees.

For those workers, consolidation from existingdowntown buildings is hopedto increase efficiency as entiredepartments can be put underone roof.

Whether it does thatremains to be seen, but whatis clear is the street now linedwith empty lots and sporadicstructures is at the apex ofchange and will soon be busierthan ever.
