Voiceover: Metformin is a biguanide derivative producing ananti-hyperglycemic effect which is observed in diabeticpatients or in diabetic animals.

Metformin improves glucose tolerance in patients withtype 2 diabetes, lowering both basal and postprandialplasma glucose. 

Scene 2:

Voiceover: Its pharmacologic mechanisms of action are differentfrom other classes of oral anti-hyperglycemic agents.Metformin may decrease hepatic glucose production,decrease intestinal absorption of glucose, and improveinsulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose

uptake and utilization.

Voiceover: Unlike sulfonylureas, metformin does not producehypoglycemia in either patients with type 2 diabetes or

normal subjects and does not cause hyperinsulinemia.
