Wuxi, a metropolis midway on the railway line from Shanghai to Nanjing, is also referred to as the 'Lus-trous Pearl of Lake Taihu'. The excellent train con-nection to Shanghai, which is 100 km away, has enabled the city to grow exponentially in recent years.

At the end of 1998, the city had 4.4 million inhabi-tants; at the end of 2010, it had over 6 million. In order to supply all of the inhabitants with drinking water from Lake Taihu, WXGS (Wuxi General Water Supply Company) built one of the first water treat-ment plants in 1991. The funding, the technology and the plants all came from abroad.

When the city was founded in 202 B.C., it was named YOUXI (tin) because of the large tin resources. When the tin was depleted in 220 AD, the city was renamed WUXI (without tin).

Wuxi’s Zhongquiao water treatment plant, which is in the south of the city, was planned by the munici-pal engineering firm Shanghai SMEDI (Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute) and built in phase 2 by Siemens AG.

At the beginning of the 4-phase project, VAG deli-vered 10 VAG EKN® Butterfly Valves with hydraulic brake and lift unit. The fact that these valves opera-ted non-stop for over 20 years convinced the Wuxi water treatment plant and made them a loyal VAG customer.

Wang Zhenglin, the acting director of the project management office gladly confirms: 'VAG is a very professional valve manufacturer that delivers high-quality products and services. The valves have a very long service life, which makes them very cost effective.'

In 2009, VAG delivered 6 VAG SKR Slanted-Seat Tilt-Swing Check Valves and 2 VAG ZETKA Non-Return Valves for the ultrafiltration plant, which has a daily volume of 150,000 m3.

The new activated carbon filtration process for the removal of ozone was built in 2010. This process increased the plant's capacity fourfold to 600,000 m3 per day. This was the project's largest building phase.

VAG also received an order to produce 267 VAG EKN® Butterfly Valves DN 250 to 2200 by 2010 at its factories in Mannheim (Germany) and Taicang (China); a real challenge! But the construction time for this phase was so short that the valves in dia-meter from DN 1600 to 2200 had to be delivered in the record time of 1.5 months.

Phase 4 of the project was completed in 2011 with the renovation of the filter and the original 1991 system. Another 40 VAG EKN® Butterfly Valves DN 600 to DN 900 with electric actuator were also installed - in the water treatment plant of Wuxim, the megacity at the Lake Taihu.
