Located in the Caribbean Sea, the Honduran island of Roatan is surrounded by crystal clear waters that are calm and warm. It is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest reef system in the world, where you can fi nd walls that drop off to hundreds of meters only a few swim strokes away from white sandy beaches.A popular diving destination since the 70’s, Roatan has all the necessary infrastructure for hosting this world-class event and to provide for the necessary comfort and safety to all participants and staff.

The island is served by the Juan Manuel Gálvez Roatán International Airport which has direct international fl ights from Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, and Houston (2 hours fl ight connection) via American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines and Avianca Airlines respectively, as well as domestic connections for international fl ights arriving into mainland Honduran cities including the capital Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and San Salvador, El Salvador (30 minutes fl ight). Canadian carriers Sunwing Airlines (via Toronto) and WestJet also serve the Island with direct charter fl ights.Roatan is also serviced by the Galaxy Wave express Catamaran ferry with two daily trips to and from La Ceiba.

Since its inception in 2013, the Caribbean Cup has become one of the most important freediving competitions in the world. World- and National Champions from countries in the 5 continents, high-level safety teams and distinguished international judges participate in this exciting competition, held at one of the most appropriate venues on the planet. Free Immersion (FIM), Constant Weight with Fins (CWT), and Constant Weight Without Fins (CNF) are the three disciplines in which athletes try to reach greater depths hile holding their breath.

Since we began to look into the process of organizing an international competition in Roatan, we started seeking for advice and expertise from professional freedivers and their governing body, AIDA. The fi rst 2 editions of the Caribbean Cup (2013/14) were held in a warm atmosphere, athletes from the 5 continents congregated and 1 world record was established, as well as 7 continental records and more than 40 national records; reaching important media outlets all over the world, such as CNN TV, CNN International , CNN en Español, Fox Sports Latinoamerica, Huffi ngton post, Deeper Blue, Silverkris Magazine (Singapore Airlines), Acuadeus Magazine (France), Sun+ Magazine (UK), Scuba Diver Life (USA), The Inertia Magazine, Sportsub.net (Venezuela), Winsports Magazine (Colombia), Voice Magazine (Honduras), Radio W (Colombia), Prawno Apparel, Publimetro Magazine (Colombia), Centro de Actividades Subacuáticas (Venezuela).(To see more, click over the respective media).

Caribbean Cup is fully dedicated to the safety of the athletes, being the fi rst freediving competition to implement a mandatory medical response course to its safety freedivers, organizers and local medical personnel. Also on the Caribbean Cup 2015 medical doctor Kerry Hollowell (US), will develope a course with an emphasis in basic and universal freediving safety procedures, more advanced CPR and ACLS elements and overall team building and leadership. All athletes and organizers are invited and encouraged to attend at no cost. The course follows the assumption that head safety diver, Ren Chapman has already set a universal standard of basic safety procedures for the entire safety team.
