anaging Director

I joined Orion as Managing Director in September 2015, having spent sixteen years as an editor and publisher at HarperCollins and Transworld. Latterly at HarperCollins I launched The Borough Press, a fiction imprint whose authors comprised international bestsellers and prize-winners, as well as serving as a launchpad for the best and brightest new talent. Over my time in publishing I have been fortunate enough to work with authors including Bernard Cornwell, Wilbur Smith, Conn Iggulden, George MacDonald Fraser, Curtis Sittenfeld, Tracy Chevalier, Lionel Shriver, Louisa Young, Nathan Filer and Joanna Cannon.

I am the Group Publisher at Orion. I have over twenty years of publishing experience, beginning as a sales representative with Hodder & Stoughton before transferring over to editorial to commission crime and thrillers. I joined Orion in 2000 as Editorial Director and now act as Group Publisher for all of our imprints. In my time here, I have worked with authors such as Ian Rankin, Harlan Coben, Bear Grylls, Kate Mosse, Neil Oliver, Michelle Paver, Joanne Harris and Matthew Reilly.

I am now the Group Associate Publisher, working across the company to develop and enable all aspects of Orion’s publishing vision and to ensure publishing excellence across the group’s imprints. I also have a focus on backlist strategy, designing and implementing initiatives throughout the company, and continue to work directly on key author brands such as Maeve Binchy and Ian Rankin.

Orion Fiction Bestselling commercial fiction from international brands to home-grown rising stars

Kate Mills

Publishing Director, O

rion Fiction

As Publishing Director at Orion Fiction, I work on a wide range of commercial fiction. I joined Orion in 2002 as Senior Editor, having begun my publishing career at Little Brown ten years earlier as an Editorial Assistant. In between, I worked as a commissioning editor for an independent publisher and then as a crime fiction buyer for a book club.

I look for stories that leave the reader with something to talk about, whether through memorable characterisation, a sweeping sense of period or place, or a fiendish plot twist. Alongside working with Sunday Times bestselling authors such as Anthony Horowitz, Erica James, Maureen Lee and Cathy Kelly, I’ve launched debuts such as Liz Fenwick’s The Cornish House, Hannah Richell’s Secrets of the Tides, and Maggie Mitchell’s dark-hearted thriller Pretty Is. I also publish historical fiction, which has included the bestseller East of the Sun by Julia Gregson, Essie Fox’s gothic thriller The Somnambulist and most recently Vanessa Lafaye’s Summertime. I particularly enjoy working with authors on plotting and structural editing.

irector, Orion Fiction

I edit crime and thriller fiction at Orion: authors such as Michael Connelly, Linwood Barclay, William Landay, Harry Bingham, Saul Black, Jonathan Moore, Alan Bradley and Kenneth Cameron; also historical fiction writers like Christian Cameron, and the uncategorizable Justin Cronin. In previous incarnations I also acquired Tess Gerritsen and Conn Iggulden. For my idea of the perfect crime thriller, read Mitchell Smith’s Daydreams.

As Senior Commissioning Editor for Orion Fiction, I acquire and publish a wide variety of different projects – from fast-paced American thrillers, including the novels of Mason Cross and Steve Cavanagh, to upmarket reading group fiction and compelling YA crossover novels. In 2016, I’m excited about publishing Shtum – Jem Lester’s funny, heartbreaking debut about a father and son – and continuing to publish Kate Williams’s gorgeous historical trilogy, The Storms of War, and Victoria Aveyard’s compelling YA fantasy series, Red Queen. I read widely across the genres, and I’m always won over by an enthusiastic recommendation. I would love to find more captivating and unique voices in the reading group area, and I’m ever on the lookout for intelligent, high-concept crime and thriller novels, such as Renée Knight’s Disclaimer. Two of my favourite books of the past few years have been The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton. They were a perfect blend of magic, intrigue and beautiful writing, and I would love to find something equally brilliant in that vein.

[email protected]+44 (0)203 122 6854@lauragerrard

I have been at Orion since 2009 and am now a Commissioning Editor in Orion Fiction. I acquire and edit books across many genres including crime and thriller, psychological suspense, women’s fiction, historical fiction and saga. I work with many authors including Sunday Times bestseller Katherine Webb, award-winning crime thriller writers Robert Wilson and Steve Mosby, debut novelist and winner of the Good Housekeeping novel-writing competition Eva Holland and saga newcomer Kitty Danton, to name just a few.

I am a huge fan of psychological suspense, so I will always be on the lookout for the next big twisty blockbuster to keep me entertained (and terrified) on my commute. I also love anything and everything by Ian McEwan. I always buy his books the moment they come out and they go straight to the top of my to-be-read pile.

I read widely and am lucky enough to work on a diverse list of books, and with authors that I loved even before I worked in publishing. I like the variety of the list in Orion Fiction; one minute I’m editing the next breathtaking thriller from CWA gold dagger winner Robert Wilson, and the next I’m transported to Italyby Nicky Pellegrino and her wonderful food-filled, sunshine-packed novels.

I’m always looking for more of those riveting stories from unique voices that I can completely fall in love with.

From memoirs to cookbooks, humour titles to big ideas, the list celebrates an eclectic mix of category-killer talent. As a publisher, I am passionate about creating beautiful books that inform, entertain and inspire. I love my job.

I joined the team at Orion in 2014, coming from Penguin, and before that I started out at Faber, in the Sales department. I work across the Orion Non-Fiction list on the cookery titles; a dream job for me, as I love learning about cuisines from all over the world and exploring new culinary trends and recipes. The Orion cookery list is second to none, and I’m fortunate enough to work with incredibly creative food writers including Fearne Cotton, Kate Adams, Nicole Pisani, Nina Parker and Ping Coombes. And if I’m particularly lucky I get to eat their amazing food.

Our Korean Kitchen, Nina St Tropez and Magic Soup are real favourites of mine from the Orion list, and we have some upcoming titles that will be hot on their heels. The last couple of years have been fantastic for interesting, beautiful and diverse cookbooks from both first-time and stalwart authors. The ones I keep returning to are A Modern Way to Eat, Plenty More and A Bird in the Hand.

I joined Orion from HarperCollins in 2014 and have been lucky to work with numerous Sunday Times bestselling authors, including YouTube sensation KSI, Madeleine Shaw (Get the Glow), Alan Partridge, Russell Brand, John Bishop, Sophie Hayes (Trafficked), Frankie Boyle and Justin Bieber. As the Publisher of Trapeze, I am looking for exciting books that start conversations and authors that stimulate debate. [email protected]+44 (0)203 122 7195@SamEades

I have recently joined Orion as a Senior Commissioning Editor, following eight years as a publicist at Transworld, Headline and Macmillan. I am very excited to be working with Anna Valentine and Emma Smith on the Trapeze imprint, commissioning commercial fiction. I’m looking for new voices in the psychological, crime, women’s fiction, speculative, historical and reading group areas. I will be looking to commission books that anticipate trends, and most importantly, that start conversations. These books will range from IP ideas generated in house, to launching and building new and existing brands, as well as looking for one big high concept project a year. The books I wish I had published which I can’t stop talking about are Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel, Blacklands by Belinda Bauer and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce. My first acquisition for the list is Tattletale, by the Costa shortlisted Sarah J Naughton. Tattletale is a high concept psychological thriller with a huge twist at 50%, and we are publishing in February 2017.

Emm

Editor, Trapeze

I joined Orion in 2013 and now commission commercial non-fiction for Trapeze, from pop science and gift humour to inspirational memoir and lifestyle. For Trapeze, I want to break exciting new talents, like Rubyetc and her debut illustrated title It’s All Absolutely Fine. I am looking for books that make readers laugh, cry, learn and keep turning pages – whether that’s a quirky gift book, a true crime thriller or fascinating life story.

I joined Orion in 2006 and publish books across the spectrum of the Weidenfeld & Nicolson Non-Fiction list, which encompasses everything from history and science to memoir and current affairs.

My authors include Gordon Corera, Anne de Courcy, Rebecca Front, John Higgs, Henry Marsh, Simon Sebag Montefiore, Ramita Navai, Adam Rutherford, Philippe Sands, Chris Skidmore, Tim Spector, Isy Suttie, Robert Twigger and Ben Wilson.

I am interested in engaging, provocative, beautifully written books by authors at the top of their field – whether that’s brain surgery, comedy writing or history. I look for writers who bring passion to their subject and understand how to inspire and entertain readers. One of the strengths of the Weidenfeld & Nicolson list has always been its international outlook, and I have a particular love of books that open up windows to the rest of the world, through reportage, history or memoir.

I work with Bea Hemming on the Weidenfeld & Nicolson list encompassing (but by no means limited to) history, memoir, popular science and investigative journalism, and with a brilliant cast of authors including Simon Sebag Montefiore, Henry Marsh and Ramita Navai.

I have had the joy of creating and writing a book dedicated to pictures of cats squeezing into odd places, and I’m interested in writers with an offbeat sense of fun who wear their scholarliness lightly, and make us see the world in a refreshing way.

Sport is one of my particular passions – football in particular – so it was a real highlight to meet Roy Keane last year. It was even worth missing the Christmas party!

Leanne Oliver

Publicity Manager

I joined Orion in August 2014, having spent three years at Transworld where I worked mainly on commercial fiction and non-fiction.

I work primarily on the non-fiction list with a few honourable exceptions across both Orion and W&N. I absolutely love working on non- fiction from memoir, to history, to science, to real-life stories. I have been for-tunate enough to work with such brilliant authors as John Higgs, Jon Holmes, Keith Lemon, Richard Porter and Chris (Simpsons Artist). On the fiction side I work with Bear Grylls, and I also produced the hardback campaign for After the Crash by Michel Bussi.

I started my career at Orion Books in 2011 working as assistant to the publicity team. I’ve since worked for HarperCollins Non-Fiction, looking after an eclectic range of authors and brands including Rachel Allen, Derek Jacobi, One Direction, Gregor Fisher and Bill Granger. I really enjoyed my time at HarperCollins and was fortunate enough to be named one of the Bookseller’s Rising Stars in 2014.

But I couldn’t stay away from Orion and am very happy to rejoin the team as Publicity Manager for paperbacks and backlist. I adore fiction and Orion’s lists boast some of my very favourite authors – from Gillian Flynn to Harriet Lane to Veronica Henry. I’m equally excited to work across the wonderfully diverse and star-studded Non-Fiction lists, particularly with the hilarious and astute Emer O’Toole and historical heavyweights like Neil Oliver Simon Sebag Montefiore.

Alex Layt

Publicity Assistant

I joined Orion in March 2016 after gaining a History degree at Southampton University and experience in a number of publicity departments such as Little, Brown and DK. Orion particularly appealed to me as they publish a diverse range of authors across a number of genres, including many household names. I deal with the Non-Fiction and Audio lists and provide generaladministrative support to the non-fiction team.

I read literary, commercial and YA fiction and my favourite books include The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North and Emma by Jane Austen to name but a few! I’ve also recently read and enjoyed Laura Barnett’s The Versions of Us and The Life and Death of Sophie Stark by Anna North, and am incredibly excited to start making lovely recipes from Madeleine Shaw’s Ready, Steady, Glow and Fearne Cotton’s Cook Happy, Cook Healthy!

Zabiba Kohli

Publicity Assistant

I began my publishing career at Orion books in 2014, where I gained four weeks of work experience with the non-fiction publicity team before I proceeded to do a Publishing MA at UCL. Whilst completing my degree I assisted the foreign rights department at Harper Collins, where I worked across all adult lists and imprints for six months. I re-joined Orion in February 2016 as Publicity Assistant for Orion Fiction. I work across our fiction paperbacks and assist with Orion Fiction, W&N and Gollancz trade publicity. I am delighted to be working on such a diverse and exciting list of books. I have a particular passion for cookery books; my collection is starting to resemble a library!
