Standard classifications

Ductile Access covers and gully grates installed in the UK should meet the requirements of the European Standard BS EN 124. This applies to all situations, road and off-road, and to all materials. Products designed to BS EN 124 are grouped and classified depending on their place of installation.

It is the responsibility of the engineer to ensure that the correct product is specified:

“The appropriate class of access covers top or gully top to be used depends upon the place of installation. The selection of the appropriate class is the responsibility of the designer. Where there is any doubt the stronger class should be selected.” Clause 5 BS EN 124.

Quality control

Companies wishing to comply with BS EN 124 must either be independently certified to BS EN 29001 or meet strict quality control procedures stipulated within the standard.

Loading specifications

Markings and badging

All covers, gratings and frames shall bear:

BS EN 124 and the appropriate class

The name and/or identification mark of the manufacturer and the place of manufacture, which may be in code

The mark of a certification body

Additional markings required by the customer

Production identification, i.e. name or reference

Upstanding access covers and frames are designed for use on a variety of projects containing chambers that are opening frequently and are not subject to vehicular traffic. The upstanding range incorporates torsion spring assistance for ease of opening by one person and are frequently used over wet wells, valve and screen chambers, but are not limited to this application. This range is particularly useful on refurbishment sites that require an economical solution that will be easily installed within existing conditions.

Mild steel high quality access covers are available to suit a multitude of applications and infill materials. These ranges are fabricated to the highest standards to ensure continued performance under operation and load.

The Keyline range of flush fitting access covers and frames include the unique Stamp-Lock locking device as standard. The Stamp-Lock devices allow for the padlock to be contained within the locking device and is extremely easy to open and close. The range has been designed for use for use on a variety of projects containing chambers that are opened frequently and are subject to slow moving vehicular traffic. The range incorporates torsion spring assistance for ease of opening by one person. Stamp-Lock products, are frequently used over wet wells, valve and screen chambers, but are not limited to these applications. They also include sealed and unsealed variations, with differing frame depths for ease of installation.

Keyline provide access solutions for high profile schemes that use heating systems, which are powered by Biomass fuel. To continue to provide up to date cost effective solutions for varying applications, Steelway now have available a light duty gas assisted hinged access cover for storage facilities that are not subject to vehicular access. The new product compliments the existing range of large opening modular cladded buildings and extremely popular flush fitting hydraulic fuel storage covers.

Our range of Sentry High Security access covers and frames include products designed and fabricated in line with LPS1175 SR4 specification. The range has been designed for use on a variety of projects including clean water reservoir chambers. The range incorporates torsion spring assistance for ease of opening by one person. On projects which require non standard sizes and products which sit outside of the scope of the specification, we have the flexibility to design and fabricate in line with the same requirements but note that they will not be certified.
