The Guideto the Dutch

Your guide to the

Velo-City 2015 - Nantes, June 2-5

In the Netherlands cycling is very common. Almost everybody cycles. It’s a safe, easy and comfortable way to move around. We have proper cycle paths, clear road marking, clear traffic regulations and plenty bicycle parking facilities. This makes cycling a convenient and safe mode of transport that costs little and is healthy too.The importance of cycling as a mode of transport is growing around the world. We notice this through the many requests we receive from other countries and cities, to help using the bicycle to create accessible and liveable cities and to realize sustainable urban mobility networks. It is our pleasure to contribute to these goals. With over 40 years of experience in bicycle policy and practical bicycle solutions, the Netherlands are a unique international testing ground. From all over the world, we welcome delegations that want to experience our cycling culture, to get inspired and to exchange knowledge and experiences. To help improving cycling locally, we also travel all around the world. You will find our Dutch cycling experts at Velo-City. In this brochure, they introduce themselves. We look forward to meeting you at our stand at Velo-City.

Amsterdam is the world’s number one cycling city. Cycling is good for your health and the environment. It keeps the city accessible and makes it a better place to live. Over half of all journeys in the city centre are taken by bicycle. Amsterdam has a unique and extensive bicyclenetwork with plenty of safe and bicycle-friendly routes. Every part of the city is easily accessible by bicycle. Amsterdam is home to a large number of bike rental companies and bike shops with repair facilities.

ProRail and Making way for the Bicycle

In 1999, ProRail launched the project Ruimte voor de Fiets(Making way for the Bicycle). To make the railroad trip from door to door easier and more comfortable, ProRail is improving bicycle parking facilities and solving bicycle parking problems at train stations, by replacing and expanding and better utilizing of existing facili-ties and building new ones. Since 1999, over 350,000 parking places have been built and renewed nationwide at over 400 train stations. The total number of parking places at train stations now numbers some 430,000, and this will increase to over 600,000 in the coming years. Parking facilities railway station Houten NL

Provincie Utrecht

Provincie UtrechtArchimesdeslaan 63584 BA UtrechtT +31 (0)30 258 2396EE [email protected] www.provincie-utrecht.nl

Utrecht is a leading international region, able to claim the highest gross domestic product per capital and the highest-educated population in the Netherlands. In 2014 the European Commission named Utrecht Europe’s most competitive region.

The province combines high living standards with a relaxed atmosphere, to which cycling plays an important role. Recently the province adopted the bicycle ambition formulated by the Region of Utrecht to double the number of commuters by bike to 60% in the year 2030.

To achieve this, the already extensive network in bicycleroutes will be upgraded and missing links will be fixed. Also investments will be made in parking solutions at railway stations and city centers. The province functions as aknowledge centre for other road authorities, within the borders of the province, but also abroad. You’re welcome to taste the quality of living in Utrecht!

Dutch Cycling Embassy, Angela Marlet
