Sevalaya Annual Report - 2008-2009

I am extremely happy that SEVALAYA has completed 21 yearsof dedicated service to society. Many of the social tensions andproblems in the society are due to prevailing inequalities. It is theduty of the civil society to address this issue and contribute to-wards upliftment of poor and marginalized sections of society. Thevolunteers of Sevalaya are exactly doing this by educating the un-der-privileged children and also imparting value education to theyouth.

Sevalaya has organized series of programmes in Central Prisonswhich I have inaugurated on the Martyr’s Day on January 30th2009 at Central Prison, Puzhal. The inmates of the prison wereimmensely benefited during the interaction section with the volun-teers of Sevalaya.

My Best Wishes to Sevalaya and may Godspeed in all their En-deavors.

R.NATARAJ, I.P.S.,Director General OfPolice (Prisons)

Sevalaya Annual Report - 2008-2009

I am very happy to know that Sevalaya is completing 21 years ofyeomen service to the needy in Thiruvallur District.

I had the pleasure of visiting Sevalaya on “Bogi” day this year. Iwas happy to see Sevalaya involving not only its own schoolchildren but also children from various other schools in its campaignfor “Smokeless Bogi”.

The service rendered by Sevalaya to children, senior citizens andto animals is praiseworthy. Monitoring 1000 children from poorfamilies to join mainstream education and providing them qualityeducation for 21 years is not an easy task.

Service to needy is service to God.

I wish and pray that Sevalaya’s services may reach many moreneedy children and senior citizens in the years to come.

Sevalaya Annual Report - 2008-2009 9

I have been closely associated with Sevalaya for some years. Trueto its name, the institution has been functioning as a temple ofservice. It has engaged itself on a rainbow of activities in servingthe poor, the needy, the destitute and the outcast in society. Itsundertaking the task of providing moral, ethical and spiritualenlightenment to prisoners in various prisons of Tamil nadu wouldsurely pave the way for the rehabilitation of these prisoners, oncethey are released and join the mainstream of society. It takes careof the emotional needs of children studying in various schools runby it by launching a number of events bringing the students togetheron important occasions. Of course, the old age home run by youprovides shelter, safety and solace to people in the twilight of theirlives. The fact that a number of foreigners have joined the institutionas volunteers and are associating themselves with the activities ofthe organization is a tribute to its openness.

I congratulate the President and his colleagues for the wonderfulperformance of the organization over the years. I am sure that theproposed Souvenir would throw light on the achievements, hopesand future vision of the organization in serving the society. I wishthe Souvenir a wonderful success. With warm regards,

Sevalaya Annual Report - 2008-2009

First of all let me congratulate you and your colleagues for the institutionalizedmeritorious service that you have been rendering to the underprivileged sectionsof the society and pray that may you have the full reward from God for what youdo.

Mother Theresa who has immortalized her memory in the history and in thehearts of the people through her selfless service to the most needy of the societysaid," There are no great acts. There are only small acts done with great love".From my few contacts with the members of Sevalaya and visit to Sevalaya itselfI can say with certitude that this syllogism of Mother is very explicit there.

Sevalaya stands faithful to its very name which means 'the temple of service'.The deities of this temple are the inmates coming from different castes, creedsand languages. Your service gives them a new meaning and hope in their life, and offers opportunities to stand by themselves. The rich experience of livingtogether offers the real taste of unity in diversity and helps the inmates to breakaway different social barriers.

Through 21 years of service of quality free education with free boarding andlodging and other committed humanitarian services to the needy especially tothe abandoned senior citizens you have created a glorious past to remember andwalking forward to make a history.

Let your light shine and wish that many more come to this temple of service andget benefit. God bless you and everyone involved in this charitable institution.Let your service and the Institution SEVALAYA give new hope and life to manymore in the coming years.

Yours sincerely,

FR. S.MARIA ARUL, CMFParish Priest Of Good ShepherdR.C.Church &Correspondent,St.Claret Matriculation School,Thiruninravur.

22

Sevalaya Annual Report - 2008-2009

Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda & Mahakavi Bharathi.

The Common thread in the philosophy of all these 3 great men is ‘Serve theneedy’.

One of Mahakavi Bharathi’s poems which talks about Saraswathi pooja saysthe following:

Just uttering some mantras, keeping books in front of Saraswathi’s pictureand offering sandal and flowers is not real Saraswathi pooja. If you openschools in areas where there are no schools and ensure that there is not asingle town in this country school-less, that is real Saraswathi pooja. Educatingone poor person is a better deed than constructing 1000 ‘annadhana Salas’and 10,000 temples.

This poem is the foundation for our ‘ Mahakavi Bharathiar school’. Todayorphan poor & destitute children get free and Quality education from thisschool.

Swami Vivekananda says that if someone is hungry, then food is the only Godfor that person. Even if a dog goes without food in this world, then there is nopoint in having any religion. Such powerful thoughts are the basis for the‘Swami Vivekananda Hostel’ in Sevalaya. As ‘Vivek’ means ‘wisdom’, wehave also named our library ‘Swami Vivekananda Library’.

Mahatma Gandhi said that India lives in its villages. If we can improve thestandard of living in the villages, then we would have done some real service.Hence all the activities of Sevalaya are carried out in a small village called‘Kasuva’. Gandhi has also spoken a lot about Indian medicine and naturecure. Hence our medical centre is called ‘Mahatma Gandhiji Health Centre’.

Name of the organisation

‘Sevalaya’ means ‘Temple of Service’. Swami Vivekananda calls the poorman as ‘Dharidranarayana’. Service done to poor and destitute is actually theprayers offered to the God. Bharathi also says that he who can’t bear thesufferings of others, is a ‘punniya murthy’ ( blessed soul). As service activitiesare going on for such Dharidranarayanas, the place is named as ‘Sevalaya’.

Three Leading Lights

PHILOSOPHY OF SEVALAYA

23

Sevalaya Annual Report - 2008-2009

Symbol of the organisationThe Symbol shows that someone is watering a plant. Who is watering is anon-issue. Any seed sown in the land, needs conducive environment to grow.On the other hand, the tree is already hidden inside the seed. The environ-ment is not creating the tree. The environment is only helping the tree, whichis already inside the seed, to come out and grow. Swami Vivekananda hassaid that education should bring out the divinity, which is already in man.Such an education is man making and character building education. How-ever, he also says that we can’t even teach an ant. Hence at Sevalaya, webelieve that we are only providing conducive atmosphere for the children togrow, so that whatever is hidden inside the seed, will come out and grow.

Slogan‘Love all Serve all’ is our slogan. We have to serve whoever is in need of ourservice, irrespective of which caste, religion or country he or she belongs to.Also the service should be done with love, remembering that we should thankthat person for giving us an opportunity to serve.

On the envelopeAll Sevalaya envelopes carry the following Quote from Swami Vivekananda.‘The first of everything goes to the poor; we have right only to what remains’.We keep hearing sayings like ‘Charity begins at home’ and ‘whatever is leftover after we satisfy our needs, can be used for Charity’ (îù‚° I…Cù¶î£¡î£ù î˜ñ‹). But Swami Vivekananda says that first do charity and whatever isleft over can be used for self. If Charity begins at home, most likely, it willend at home also. If we can provide for charity only after satisfying our needs,it is like taking bath in the sea after the waves stop, because our needs willalways expand to match our increased income.

The visiting card

The visiting card of Sevalaya carries the colour photo of the Trinity of Sevalayaviz Mahatma Gandhi, Mahakavi Bharathi and Swami Vivekananda on theface, just to ensure that the card not only serves as a visiting card but alsocarries the message of the three great men.

Thirukural

Our Children chant the following Thirukural before any meal:

𰈶‡´ ð™½J˜ æ‹¹î™ - Ë«ô£˜ªî£°ˆîõŸÁœ â™ô£‹ î¬ô.

Sevalaya Annual Report - 2008-2009

It means that sharing and eating what you have is the highest form ofVirtue. Donors who come and celebrate their birthdays, wedding days andobserve memory days of their family elders sponsor many of the meal tochildren at Sevalaya. Our children pray for them before the meal and thankthem for sharing and eating what they have, an exhibition of highest form ofvirtue.

Invocation song

On all Sevalaya functions, our children sing 'Achamillai, Achamillai' (Nofear, No fear), a song composed by Bharathi. Normally invocation songs aresung in praise of some God or Goddess. We have also heard from many thatone should be God fearing. In Sevalaya, we believe that children shouldhave devotion to God and not fear. We tell our children that as long as theyhave not done anything wrong, they need not fear anyone, including God.Bhagavad Gita also says that fearlessness is one of the virtues one shouldpossess. To emphasise this fact, we sing Achamillai, as our invocation song.

Two basic principles

As you enter Sevalaya, you will notice 'the writing on the gate' - 'Please shedall your preferences / prejudices, if any, based on caste, creed, colour, reli-gion, language, sex, nationality etc., before entering.' This is one of our ba-sic principles at Sevalaya. We welcome all, whoever needs our service, orwhoever wants to serve, irrespective of whatever 'group' they may belongto.

All our services are rendered free of cost. We will not collect any fee fromanyone. Our school is free, we give uniforms, books, notebooks etc, free toall children studying in our school. Even pick-up and drop is arranged freefor small children coming from outside. Our medical centre and library areall free for all the villagers. The old age home is also free and the inmatesneeed not pay anything . We do this because, we are serving that section ofthe society, which cannot afford to pay for anything.

Treating children & senior citizens

We are giving continuous training to our staff to treat our children and se-nior citizens with love and affection. Any sort of physical punishment isbanned in our school. Serving these children and the senior citizens is thevery purpose of our organisation.

Sevalaya Annual Report - 2008-2009

WE HAVE A DREAM !.....

Higher education in India has become very expensive. Many in the middleclass struggle to send their children to colleges. If that is the case, think of thefate of poor and orphan children, many are bright and if given a chance, theywill shine very well in higher education. If an entire university is functioning toprovide free education to the orphan and poor, we are sure, no one will stayaway from higher education for financial reasons.

Imagine a university- huge in size, high in Quality, functioning from a smallvillage, where there was not even a school, few years ago. Before Sevalayastarted its own school, the village children had to travel six Kms. to reach thenearest school. Many of them would prefer to skip school and work in thepaddy fields, for want of proper public transport and of course the all-impor-tant money. Currently the same village has a school with 32 class rooms, anauditorium, four labs, and a library. 1000 children are getting the benefit offree education here. If this transformation is possible in 21 years time, giveanother 15 years or so, a university is also possible.

Thinking BIG is the first step. Let us take the first step, imagine ‘A Universityat Kasuva’. Like all services rendered by Sevalaya, dreaming is also free !With full support from each one of you, this dream will become a reality, incourse of time.

The organization functions in a hamlet, Kasuva near Thiruninravur 40 kmwest of Chennai. This village which is the centre of our operations hasundergone marked transformation in many fields in recent years throughSevalaya’s service activities.

Managing Trustee’s Report

Dear Friends,

We have completed yet another successful year. Our childrenhave done us proud by once again giving the school 100%result in XII and 98% result in X grade. We are the only Tamilmedium school in the entire district of Thiruvallur to get 100%results in XII grade. We thank all those who supported us andmade this possible - the donors who continued their unflinch-ing support for all these 21years, the dedicated staff, volun-teers both from India and abroad and many other well wish-ers. Children spend happy and useful time in the hostel, thesenior citizens relax in the old age home and the cows have apleasant time under the trees in the Goshala. All units haveprogressed well during the year and we look forward to moreachievements in the years to come.

During the year we purchased extra land to construct the sec-ond school building, as the current building is full and we havean overwhelming demand for more admissions from poorersections of the society. We have also got the first donation forthe first class room, but yet to start construction as we arelooking for more funds to start with a bunch of class rooms.

During this year’s strategy meeting, we brain stormed and cameup with new and fresh vision and mission statements. The basicidea of Sevalaya is to uplift the poor and we derive immensejoy in doing so. We have seen a generation of poor peoplegetting educated under Sevalaya's care and they have all comeup very well in life. When we see this, we feel very happy andthat is the only return we expect from the work we do. Hencethe vision statement was decided to be "Uplift of poor; un-

bounded cheer". Why Sevalaya was formed comes from threesimple teachings from the three leading lights of our organi-zation. "Educate atleast one poor child" from Bharathi; "Indialives in its villages" from Gandhiji and "God comes in the formof Roti for a hungry man" from Swami Vivekananda. So themission statement was built around this and in fact Sevalaya'sactivities got reorganized under these three broad areas. Thenew organization chart is what you see on the cover of thisannual report. Hope this re-org will give us more energy toimplement the three goals we have taken up.

If you have not visited our campus in the past 21 years, pleasevisit and meet our children and grand pas and grand mas. Ifyou have already visited, please come again! Please give usa helping hand in our next major mile stone, the constructionof our own university.

Thanks & Regards
