Downhole Fluid Analysis with Lab-Quality Results

ICE CoreSM Fluid Analysis Service

Until now, downhole fluid analysis has been limited. Optical analyzers could tell you when your sample was pure enough to collect, but rarely could they tell you which fluid components were present and in what proportions. The revolutionary, new Halliburton ICE Core™ technology can give you that information. It is available in the Integrated Characterization Section (ICS) of Halliburton’s proven Reservoir Description Tool (RDT™ tester).

How ICE Core Technology WorksLight shines through downhole fluids and then through ICE Core

sensors. Each sensor is programmed to recognize the chemical

nature – or optical fingerprint – of a specific fluid component,

such as methane, ethane, propane, aromatics, saturates or water.

Measuring the intensity of light passing through any one sensor

indicates the presence and proportion of a particular chemical

component within the overall fluid.

How ICE Core Technology DiffersICE Core technology relies on the ruggedness and simplicity of

photometric detection, not spectroscopy. As a result, ICE Core

technology does not require a computer to perform calculations on

an optical spectrum like competing systems. Each ICE Core sensor

is designed to respond specifically to the fingerprint of the selected

analyte using all of the useful information in the optical spectrum.

At Last. Downhole Fluid Analysis with Lab-Quality Results.Introducing ICE CoreSM fluid analysis service from Halliburton, a revolutionary new way to accurately analyze fluids downhole.

Identify Fluids that Other Tools Can’tICE CoreTM technology captures information

from the spectrum that other tools can’t

read. As a result, it can reliably identify

hydrocarbons plus many other fluid

components such as:

n CO2*n Asphaltenes*n Methanen Ethanen Propanen Water *n Saturatesn Aromaticsn Resins*n Gas/oil ratios (GOR)n H2S*

Benefits of ICE Core Technology Compared to Spectrometryn More reliablen More accuraten Simpler, measures light directly,

no downhole computer neededn More precisen Higher signal-to-noise ration Better dynamic rangen Sensitive to mid-infraredn Measures more fluid components

Ideal Applicationsn Deepwater/Offshoren Explorationn Sample validationn Fluid analysis between samplesn Where flow assurance is an issuen When mapping water floodsn When determining reservoir connectivityn When determining compositional grading

of reservoir fluidsn To see if fluids are changing

The ICS20 will take up to 20 ICE Core measurements downhole using a rotating wheel of selected sensors.

Wider RangeICE Core technology spans a broader optical range than

conventional downhole spectroscopy tools that analyze

only a limited portion of the spectrum (wavelengths up to

2100 nm). ICE Core technology measures wavelengths up

to 5500 nm where important fluid components like hydrogen

sulfide can be optimally characterized. Stronger, clearer and

more descriptive optical fingerprints are in the mid-infrared

portion of the spectrum where competitive technology simply

cannot make measurements.

More Reliable ResultsBecause ICE Core technology involves only direct measurement,

not a spectrometer, it is very reliable. The design and fabrication

of ICE Core sensors are very complicated processes, but using

them to analyze fluids downhole is relatively simple. The

essential components are merely a light source, the ICE Core

sensors and a detector.

Real-Time ResultsAs part of Halliburton’s field-proven Reservoir Description

Tool (RDT™ tester), ICE Core technology can provide surface

readouts in real time.

Field-Proven ResultsHalliburton has used ICE Core technology since 2012

with clients around the world, including customers in the

U.S., North Sea, Middle East, Latin America and Africa.

ICE Core technology yields results that correlate highly

with lab analysis. Gas-oil ratios and fluid densities have

been validated to within 14 scf/bbl and 1% respectively. The

technology has successfully analyzed fluids under conditions

that range from 3,000 to 20,000 psi, and from 150˚ to 350˚F.

Why Downhole Fluid Analysis?ICE Core technology tells you when reservoir fluids are

pure enough to collect. It also provides a valuable preview

of laboratory results. Fluid samples never get better than

when they’re downhole, whereas laboratory analysis can

have limitations:

n Turn-around time – It can take months or even years

to get lab results, delaying planners.

n Operational risks – Precious samples can get lost or

damaged in transit to the lab.

n Sample degradation – Contamination in collection tubes

can scavenge elements within samples, skewing results.

n Phase change – Loss of pressure and heat at the surface

can cause some fluid components to change phase and

come out of solution.

More Data from More ZonesClients may want to collect samples from a large number

of zones in a well, but may not have the capacity. ICE Core

technology can give clients insight into the fluid properties

whether or not physical samples are captured.

ICE Core technology enables you to analyze fluids from other

zones – without making additional runs. Analyzing samples

from more points within the well enables you to see if fluids

are stratified within your reservoir.

When drilling exploration or development wells, ICE Core

technology also provides valuable information about reservoir

connectivity. Knowing precisely what fluids are present enables

reservoir engineers to design a comprehensive production strategy.

ICE Core technology can give you valuable insight that helps

plan your completion and top-side facilities by collecting more

data from more zones.
