•The first settlers arrived about 50,000 years ago•At the time of the British settlement there were around 300,000 aboriginals speaking around 250 different languages•There was no obvious political structure so the Europeans took it on as their own land•Fighting completely wiped out the Aboriginals in one part of Australia called Tasmania, and reduced numbers greatly in other areas
