PIONEER GUN CLUB – OCTOBER 2018

The Siege of Beslan By: Ryan Nash

Russia has had conflicts with the region of Chechnya for decades, with some of the most shocking acts of terrorism occurring in Rus-sia by radical Chechen extremists, including the infamous 2002 Moscow Theater Hostage Crisis - which resulted in an estimated 170 dead and 700 wounded - and the horrific Siege of Beslan. The Siege of Beslan oc-curred in the town of Beslan, Russia, a town of 34,000 about thirty miles from the Che-chen border. On September 1, 2004, most Beslan families

were preparing for their first day of the

school year. Beslan’s School No. 1 taught

many of Beslan’s youth grades 1-11. Thirty

Chechen Muslim terrorists, including two

women, loaded up weapons and explosives and traveled to Beslan’s School No. 1. During the Opening Ceremony of the First

Day of School, these terrorists stormed the school, killing a security guard, a police officer, and 21 civilians in the process, while

taking 1,200 hostages; mostly women children. They corralled them in the gym and school buildings then fortified their position,

firing on civilians and local law enforcement who tried to approach. They rigged the gym, school, and approaches with a large

number of explosive devices, including trip wires, dead-man automatic switches, and suicide vests were on the two female ‘Black

Widows’. Russia originally attempted to minimize the damage politically, but the situation was too apparent for their propaganda

and lies to be believed.

Russia sent former general Ruslan Aushev from Moscow to meet with the terrorist leader, known as ‘The Colonel’ where the terrorists’ demands and threats were addressed. They threatened 20 dead hostages for each terrorist wounded, and 50 executions for each one killed. They demanded the Rus-sian military pull out of Chechnya and an end to Russia’s war with Chechnya. Russian Spetsnaz Soldiers and military ar-rived to organize a perimeter defense. Small arms fire was exchanged periodically to keep the Russian’s at bay. An in-ternal struggle ensued at one point, and one of the female sui-cide bombers either self-detonated her vest or was shot before doing so. The terrorists quickly decided to deprive their hostages of

food, water, and use of restrooms. With the scorching heat

rising above 100 °F, a packed in a room with thousands of

explosions erupted in the gym full of the hostages, forcing Russian Spetsnaz to

assault the school. Supported by local militia and armed civilians, the Spetsnaz

troops courageously charged into a den of booby-trapped explosives, fortified

heavy machine guns, and over two dozen well-armed terrorists. They suffered

heavy casualties and deaths. After the multiple-hour gun battle, explosions and

fires, Spetsnaz rescued the surviving hostages and neutralized the terrorist

threat. Eighteen Spetsnaz commandos died, but even more tragically, 331 civil-

ians died - 176 children – and 500 were wounded.

PIONEER GUN CLUB – OCTOBER 2018

The Siege of Beslan (cont.) Russia has continued to deal with ongoing terrorist threats and improve its counterterrorism efforts, to avoid and mitigate future tragedies like occurred at Beslan and the Dubrovka Moscow Theater. Chechnya still struggles with radicalization and terrorism, and has had ongoing conflicts and wars with its neighbors and Russia, fueled by ethnic and religious tensions. Unfortunately, not unlike parts of the Middle East, Chechnya remains an unresolved geopolitical conflict which will require further action or negotia-

tion to bring about an eventual, lasting peace. Meanwhile, the people and city of Beslan - including many parents, widows and orphans - have to contend with the emotional scars that will likely never fully heal from such an awful tragedy.

Please be aware of ALL range rules….. There seems to be some confusion on what is allowed at our Brickyard location and on our ranges containing steel targets (ranges 8 & 6). Outside of 22 rifles or pellet guns, these ranges are pistol only ranges with a power factor of 450ftlbs or less. Carbines of ANY caliber are not allowed on these ranges. If you are not 100% certain what is allowed on any of our ranges please reach out to a board member or refer to our By-Laws. Our By-Laws are available on our website and may be downloaded anytime with a simple click. Please know that ignorance is not an excuse!

Sight-In Days – WEEKEND CHANGE!! By Ed Camp

Attention ALL members! The sight-in Days weekend has been changed! It is now one week earli-er than it has been.
