Prosthetic Limbs
Prosthetic Types
Passive - This prosthetic doesn’t move independently and is just for show.
Mechanical - This type opens and closes based on wrist action. Voluntary opening opens based on wrist action and is held closed by elastic. Voluntary closing closes based on wrist action and thus allows for a stronger grip
(held closed based on arm strength)
Myoelectric - This type moves based on muscle movements from remaining part of limb, communicated through electrodes. This type is generally high-
end, but several initiatives are using 3D printing to lower costs.
Current ProstheticsProsthetics currently on the market tend to have a very utilitarian,
mechanical aesthetic that few users are satisfied with.
While some put more consideration into aesthetics, most aim to disguise the prosthetic, enforcing the idea that an amputation is a deformity.
Even in those that aim for style, few are feminine in appearance.
The Eyeglasses ModelEyeglasses are one of the most common assisstive medical devices in
our society, yet we rarely view them in this context. Why?
While some choose to hide their need for corrective lenses in the same way some amputees choose a realistic arm, there are many options for
vary obvious but also stylish glasses - why not prosthetics?
Fashion ProstheticsDesigners have started a new trend of modified or custom-built prosthetics geared
toward art and high fashion. While these help push the idea that a prosthetic need not be solely functional, few are
suitable for everyday wear.

The GoalDesign a prosthetic that captures not only Dove’s aesthetic design, but fits their dialog of new beauty standards.
This is not a prosthetic that blends in - this is a statement of style, confidence, and femininity for a target market
that is often denied these ideas.
