Recognize and produce rhyming words

In this lesson, students will practice matching picture cards that rhyme. By using the pictures as cues, the students can attack the idea of rhyming building a foundation for reading readiness.

Cut the picture cards out and have your student chose one, color it, and find the matching rhyme. Then have them color the matching rhyme to make a rhyming pair. Always confirm that they rhyme because they sound the same at the end.

o Ex. Funny, Bunny – “yes, they rhyme because they sound the same at the end because they both end with the “y” sound.”

After cutting, matching, and coloring all the pairs. Have the student lay out all the bingo cards.

o Give them a picture card that they colored and have them “spy” the matching rhyme on a bingo card. (give them red and they “spy” bed. They can color the bingo card picture if you wish or have them simply match the picture card to the bingo card.

o Continue this procedure until all the cards are matched up. After all the bingo cards have been matched with picture cards, all the picture cards

have been colored and matched previously to pairs you are ready to begin playing bingo.

o Mix up all the picture cards. You will need the following cards for this version of bingo (version 2 will

have use the remaining picture cards.

o Show the student the picture card and if they have the rhyme on their card they can cover the spot

You can coach as needed because hearing it is also learning it – practice is key here as they will soon have the rhyme to automaticity.

Recommendations for extending the rhyming fun: Play go fish

o Students get a bingo card and the cards go in the middle of the table.o The student will draw a card either from the cards in the middle or the discard pile. If

they get a match, they can put it on their card. Then they must tell you a word that rhymes with their word. It can even be a

silly word as long as it rhymes.o If they do not get a match, they discard the card into the discard pile and the next

person draws.
