Dear 4-H Families EXPERTS NOT NEEDED! During the month of March I promoted 4-H at several elementary schools using STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities. I routinely heard adults say they never knew we offered so much science; they had always associated 4-H only with farming. Kids didn’t have that narrow view of 4-H. Unfortunately, most of them didn’t have any. Only 15% had ever heard of 4-H. Thankfully, after an hour of fun science experiments, a survey showed these results: 73% are more aware of 4-H and what it offers 62% are interested in attending 4-H summer science camps 74% are interested in joining an afterschool club next year 95% would like to learn more about technology Our brand is growing! This is great news! The question is: Who will help meet this demand for more STEM projects? You don’t have to be an expert to lead or help with science activities. Many experiments are just that: experiments! Youth solve problems by trial and error, and are excited to try new things and share their ideas with each other. Most of what we offer right now is geared towards elementary and junior high youth, and we have lots of resources: 4-H’s Project Guides are basically step by step lesson plans. Equipment. Our office has some gear and supplies to get you started. Training. A SciGirls training was held a few weeks ago and another is coming May 16 th . It’s a fun, hands-on evening that allows you to try out some simple experiments and leave with resources for more. My hope is to offer new experiments to try on a monthly basis. More “training”! If you are interested in trying a new science project, call me! There’s a very good chance I don’t know how to do it myself, but I bet we can figure it out together! Volunteer as an assistant. Dear 4-H Families

EXPERTS NOT NEEDED!

Thankfully, after an hour of fun science experiments, a survey showed these results:

73% are more aware of 4-H and what it offers 62% are interested in attending 4-H summer science camps 74% are interested in joining an afterschool club next year 95% would like to learn more about technology

Our brand is growing! This is great news! The question is: Who will help meet this demand for more STEM projects? You don’t have to be an expert to lead or help with science activities. Many experiments are just that: experiments! Youth solve problems by trial and error, and are excited to try new things and share their ideas with each other. Most of what we offer right now is geared towards elementary and junior high youth, and we have lots of resources:

4-H’s Project Guides are basically step by step lesson plans.

Training. A SciGirls training was held a few weeks ago and another is coming May 16th.

In June I will lead Inventgenuity, a new summer science camp at the fairgrounds. I need help, and it would be a great way for you to see how a lot of dif-ferent activities are done! Details are inside this newsletter.

Tiger’s Pride Self Defense

These 3 photos that were taken

at a self defense outing. We

went to the Mattevi Martial Arts

Academy where the instructor,

Master Gary Mattevi, spent 2

hours with our club. He talked a

little about the “Duluth Model”

which is a nationally acclaimed

domestic abuse intervention

project which

reviews healthy and

unhealthy relationships. He

reviewed date rape, awareness

of your surroundings, preven-

tion, etc.……

This was followed by about 1 ½

hours of instructions of ways to

increase the odds of escaping an

attacker by concentrating on cer-

tain areas of the body. We were

able to use our glossy paper/ink

cartridge collections to fund the

outing.
