To mark the blessing andinauguration of the Ateneo MVPCenter for Student Leadership, aleadership forum was held on July25, 2006 at the Escaler Hall ofthe Science Education. Theforum, envisioned to be anannual event, had for its first year’theme “Preparing for thechallenges of leadership in theAsia of tomorrow.”

Two prominent Asian businessleaders were invited speakers:Chartsiri Sophonpanich,president of Bangkok Bank inThailand, one of the largestregional banks in Southeast Asia;and Ronnie Chan, chairman ofthe Hang Lung PropertiesLimited, one of the largest realestate development,management, and investmentfirms in Hong Kong. The forumwas hosted and facilitated byDavid Celdran.

In his opening remarks, ManuelV Pangilinan, alumnus, businessleader, and generous donor afterwhom the MVP Center forStudent Leadership is named,described the forum as a differentway of celebrating theconstruction of the center. Hesaid that the inauguration waspatterned after the practice atStanford University where topleaders such as Bill Gates and

Warren Buffet are invited asspeakers.

Mr. Pangilinan, a known sportsbuff, shared nuggets ofleadership wisdom. Likeningleadership to badminton, heencouraged students to “playwith people better than you are.”He explained that this practiceenables one to better know andunderstand one’s competitors,one’s goals, as well as one’s self.

Hybrid of experiencesMr. Sophonpanich began bydescribing the ideal leader intoday’s world, citing importantqualities such as integrity,flexibility, and diversity.He shared how his ability to leadwas tested during the Asianeconomic crisis in the late ‘90s.As leader of a major bank in

Thailand and in the Asian region,he faced the challenge of buildinga more modern and resilientinstitution. He implementedseveral reforms within theorganization such as adoptingforeign principles, strengtheningcommunication by lettingemployees know their corporatevision and values well, andengaging the government,customers, and the world at large.The secret of Bangkok Bank’ssuccess, according to Mr.Sophonpanich, was that it wasable to identify their customersfrom different sectors—corporate, commercial, smallbusiness, and consumer—andprovide for each customer’sneeds.

Another piece of advice heshared was to “be prepared forthe unexpected.” Faced with theunexpected, he said we must learnto visualize solutions, adjust whennecessary, learn rapidly fromfailure, and be open and flexible.He also said that our mindsetmust be oriented towardcompeting with companies notjust within the region, but aroundthe globe. Thus, the question tokeep in mind always is, “What willmake you stand out?”

Finally, Mr. Sophonpanich, whowas raised in a traditional Thai

family and received Westerneducation, cited his “hybrid ofexperiences” as an advantage.This, he said, gave him “new waysof thinking and doing.”

World view and human natureFor his part, Mr. Chan gave alively and humor-filled sharing ofhis experiences as a leader,illustrating the characteristics ofa good leader on the macro andmicro levels.

On the macro level, he said that aleader must cultivate his worldview. This world view, he said, willhelp one read two of life’sconstants: history and humannature. It is in this world view andconsequent understanding ofhuman nature that one is able to“project the future.” In addition,a sound world view gives one the“ability to synthesize chaos intorationality.”

On the micro level, Chan advisedthe future leader to be “extremelydemanding on himself.” He said

one must always strive forexcellence. Although a person isnot perfect and more people arebound to be smarter, the solutionis to try harder.

He cited as an example thepoverty of the Chinese and thewealth of the Japanese. He saidthat the Chinese are smart butseem to be not too demandingon themselves, whereas theJapanese, who are probably nosmarter than the Chinese, arewealthier precisely because theywork harder and strive forexcellence.

subject, he said, could they be-come something more. “That’swhen teaching become truly for-mative.”

To form and inform—the phi-losophy is consistent with theemphasis of the Loyola Schoolsadministration on “student-cen-tered learning.”

Ocampo writes regularly for theInquirer and heads the NationalCommission for Culture and theArts and the National HistoricalInstitute, but he has no desire toabandon teaching. In his accep-tance speech, he said that “it is inthe classroom where you seewhether your message is gettingacross or not.” Students are hisfirst critics, and in the exchangebetween teacher and student liesthe frisson of learning.

The exchange can be mutuallyenriching. Once, for instance, heshowed his class a picture ofLeonor Rivera. His studentsgiggled. “I asked them why andexplained that [the drawing] wasmade by Rizal himself. Unfazed,one student stood up and de-clared, ‘That’s not Leonor Rivera;that’s Michael Jackson after cos-metic surgery!’ I looked at thefading tired slides I had been us-ing for the past twenty years andfor the first time saw other im-ages, other ways of seeing.” Sim-ply by knowing where the studentis at—a principle of student-cen-tered learning—the teacherlearns, too.

A history class with Ocampo isnot a dull rehearsal of facts—which fact is probably why hisclasses are much sought after.

The TOSP awardees were chosenfrom a field of 30 finalists selectedfrom colleges and universities allover the Philippines. The finalistsare students who exemplify the“TOSP way of life” through theirclear demonstration of leadership,

social responsibility, and academicexcellence “grounded on goodmoral values in pursuit of nationbuilding.”

Selection was based not solely onpaper credentials. In the finalstages, the 30 finalists underwenta week-long live-in program thatincluded both formation andteam-building. During this time,they also met and were interviewedby the members of the nationalboard of judges who are amongthe most respected and well-known personalities in the country.

Present to assist Kellda and torepresent the Ateneo during theawarding ceremony was Rodolfo P.Ang, dean of the John GokongweiSchool of Management. Pedro, the pool’s primary donor,said that the inauguration was thefulfillment of his dream ofbuilding a swimming pool whereathletes and students can honetheir skills. Being a former BlueTanker also instilled in him a“special respect for athletes.”Moreover, he cited his father as

his inspiration for giving back tothe Ateneo. His father, he said,went several times to his schoolin China to help build track andfield facilities. But sports, Pedrosaid, is only one of his advocacies.He also supports a diverse rangeof fields such as music,academics, and spiritualdevelopment.

Following the inaugurationceremonies, the Ateneo varsityswimming teams from the gradeschool, high school, and LoyolaSchools presented a swimmingexhibition much to the delightand awe of guests. mcor rea,www.ateneo.edu

Pope Benedict XVI frequentlylaments the secularization ofmany societies to the point thatmany people no longer haveroom for God in their lives. Thissituation makes the work ofhanding on the faith moredifficult than ever, particularly forcatechists and religion educators.As such, the Holy Father’srecognition of the contributionmade by Rev. Fr. Joseph L. Roche,SJ is truly an occasion forcelebration here in thePhilippines. The August 18, 2006conferment of the Pro ecclesiaet pontifice award to Fr. Rochenot only honors the decades-longservice he has given thePhilippine Church in formingyoung men and women but alsothe work of all catechists andreligion educators in the country.As Fr. Roche himself noted in hisacceptance speech, he is “merelya small agent among the many[who responded] to the RisenChrist’s apostolic commission tomake disciples of all peoples,teaching them to observe all thatHe, our Lord has taught us.”

Three endeavors come to mindwhen we think of Fr. Roche andhis work for the Church in thePhilippines. First, there is the

National Catechetical Directoryof the Philippines (NCDP).Secondly, we have the Catechismfor Filipino Catholics (CFC). TheNCDP and the CFC are the twobasic sources for catechesis in thecountry; both the result of morethan ten years of scholarly workby Fr. Roche and other educators.The NCDP sets the catecheticalprogram for all levels of religioneducation, with its uniquemethodology of integrating faithwith daily living. The CFC is thefirst national catechism to beapproved by the Congregation ofthe Doctrine of the Faith in 1996.Fr. Roche’s work on NCDP andthe CFC is also a fruit of hisexperience with the FormationInstitute for Religion Educators(FIRE), which he began in 1978.FIRE is the graduate program ofthe Loyola School’s TheologyDepartment that works on a four-summer cycle. It aims to educateand form professional catechistsand religion teachers through aholistic use of sources in relationto Christian practices.

If we truly reflect on these andFr. Roche’s many otheraccomplishments, we find thatthey are rooted in his trulyIgnatian way of life; a life

characterized by his simplicityand dedication to the mission,particularly in “the progress ofsouls in Christian life anddoctrine and the propagation ofthe faith.” Secondly, we cannotfail to recognize his outstandingskill of critical thinking, whichpassionately comes to fore inorder to effectively communicatethe faith. This skill is somethingthat Fr. Roche continues to tryto pass on not only the graduatestudents of FIRE but to all hisstudents and colleagues. Finally,his deep love for the Churchkeeps him true to his mission ofcommunicating the doctrines ofthe faith so that Filipino Catholicslive a truly Christian life, wheredoctrine, morals, and worship aretruly integrated. melocker,mlcnatividad, cdurano

For years now, Ateneo stu-dents, faculty members, andalumni have reaped awards invarious literary contests and thisyear’s Don Carlos Palanca Memo-rial Awards for Literature is noexception.

Lawrence L. Ypil of the Depart-ment of English topped the En-glish Poetry division with his col-lection of poems, The Highest Hid-ing Place, while Allan Alberto N.Derain of the Kagawaran ng Fili-pino copped the third prize in theMaikling Kuwentong Pambata divi-sion for Ang Regalo ng Taong Ibon.

Ateneo alumnus and seasonedwriter Jose Edmundo O. Reyes(BS ME ’94) won first prize in theEnglish Essay division with Fun-gibility, Dead Souls and OCWs, andMartin V. Villanueva (III BFA-Creative Writing) placed third inthe same division with the essayHe’d rather be relevant. Ryan Ed-ward L. Chua (III AB Comm)

garnered second place in theKabataan Essay division withHome.

Other Ateneans who triumphedin the Palancas this year wereSocorro Villanueva (AB Psych’82) who won first place in theShort Story division with Ma-hogany Water, and Raymundo T.Pandan, Jr. (AB Eco ’83) whoplaced third in the Poetry divisionwith the collection Illuminationsand Sonorities.

The aim of the Palanca awards isto develop Philippine literature byproviding incentives for writers tocraft their most outstanding lit-erary work. Lawrence Ypilcouldn’t agree more, believingthat winning and losing in any lit-erary contest should be under-stood in the context of this de-velopment of tradition, in so faras a “winner” (or a “loser” as inthe case may be), upholds or re-sists the perceived tradition.

For Allan Alberto Derain, the tra-dition of short story for childrenhas always been compromised byits “marketability,” its appeal formiddle-class parents, and peda-gogical enterprise to the detri-ment of the craft. With PalancaAwards, Derain believes there areless of these constraints and writ-ers are relatively freer to experi-ment on topics, themes, andforms. Derain longs for the timewhen the short story for childrenwill be recognized for its truemerits and not just as a subgenre,as though its writers were infe-rior to writers of “more serious”forms.

Though Derain laments theproblem of tokenism ofchildren’s literature in general,Ypil, on the other hand, is con-cerned about the gap betweenEnglish and Filipino writers, con-sidering the furor raised by someacademe and writers over the re-cent controversy regarding theNational Artist Awards for Lit-erature.

Ypil considers the primacy of lan-guage use in any writing craft, butmore than the eloquence, awriter’s preoccupation is the in-terrogation of his language,whether English or Filipino. “Noone has the monopoly on reality,and we perceive the world onlythrough our words.” For Ypil,speaking or writing in Filipinodoes not make one more knowl-edgeable about our country.“The world comes through the

And then there were five. From a skeletoncrew of two, the Loyola Schools faculty for-mation team now consists of five faculty co-ordinators: Agustin Martin G. Rodriguez,PhD, Coordinator for Faculty Development;Ma. Elizabeth J. Macapagal, PhD, ProgramCoordinator for Teacher Formation Institute(TFI); Floredeliza F. Francisco, PhD, ProgramCoordinator for Spiritual Formation (ISEWand Colloquium on Solidarity for Teaching);Edith Liane Peña Alampay, PhD, Coordina-tor for Research; and Leland Joseph R. de laCruz, Coordinator for Faculty Social Involve-ment.

Loyola Schools Bulletin spoke with each ofthe faculty formators and found that despitethe diversity of their fields and skills, the teamis one in recognizing the importance of form-ing faculty members, who in turn serve as theirstudents’ formators. Read on and get to knowthe people who form the formators.

The faculty needs as much cura per-sonalis as do students, and the re-vitalized faculty development pro-gram is the response of the LoyolaSchools administration to thisneed.

In the not so distant past, the fac-ulty development program wassynonymous with funding for thehigher degree. In the last four yearssince Agustin Martin “Guss”Rodriguez, PhD assumed the po-sition as program coordinator,however, it has acquired a moreholistic character.

After talking to faculty membersabout their needs, Guss devisedprograms to “develop the facultyas people who need to be caredfor, given that they spend so muchof themselves serving the school.”In addition to facilitating requestsfor deloading and financial assis-tance for the completion of anMA or a PhD, the faculty devel-opment program now more ac-tively helps the faculty to becomeboth better formators and betterteachers through its various activi-ties and workshops. Among themare the Teachers’ Formation Insti-tute, the Ignatian Spirituality forEducation Workshop, the Collo-quium on Solidarity for Teaching,and workshops on classroommanagement and teaching meth-ods. The office has also sponsored“lounge days,” where faculty from

the four schools socialize with oneanother over a meal.

To improve the delivery of its ser-vices, the faculty development pro-gram has ceased to be a one-officershow. Maria Elizabeth Teresa “Mel-issa” J. Macapagal, PhD coordinatesthe activities related to teaching skillsdevelopment, while Flordeliza “Flor”F. Francisco, PhD coordinates thoserelated to spiritual formation.

Guss, a faculty member and gradu-ate of the Philosophy Departmentwhere has taught courses in Plato,Scheler, Social Philosophy, and thePhilosophy of Religion in the lastsixteen years, comments on his ownperformance as the coordinator ofthe faculty development program:“I really didn’t think I was right forit. I just felt that I knew how people

needed to be cared for at the time,and I was called to serve.”

What does he plan to do after fac-ulty development? “To focus onraising my son and my research. Ihope to be able to be an involvedfather without guilt. Wala kasingsupport system sa ADMU, so if youwant to be an involved dad, youhave to really work hard to not skipmeetings because no one will lookafter your kid.”

Perhaps with that response,Rodriguez has hinted at yet anotherneed that the faculty developmentprogram can address in the futureif it is going to be even more holis-tic. Until then, the program seemson the right track towards giving theLoyola Schools administration ahuman and humane face. joc

Maria Elizabeth Teresa J. Macapagal,PhD, assistant professor at thePsychology Department, serves asthe new Loyola Schools Coordi-nator for Teacher Formation In-stitute (TFI). As TFI Coordinator,Melissa’s annual work calendarbegins during the summer whenthe TFI offers an orientation pro-gram for new faculty members.Throughout the year, the TFI isexpected to organize follow-upsessions, sometimes in coordina-tion with the other Loyola Schoolscoordinators. Right now, Melissafeels that one of her biggest chal-lenges is to identify and addresscommon needs of Loyola Schools’

diverse group of faculty members.A clue may lie in the results of arecently conducted training needssurvey which show that facultymembers want to learn how to dealmore effectively with their studentsgiven the students’ psychologicalprofiles, and how to construct teststhat can effectively measure stu-dents’ learning process. Also in thepipeline are a series of nationalsituationers as part of the effort toraise faculty members’ social con-sciousness.

Melissa surmises that one of thestrengths she brings to her newpost is her familiarity with the

Ateneo’s culture, values, and for-mation, having gotten her under-graduate and doctoral degreeshere, and having spent a year inXavier University, Cagayan de Oroas a Jesuit Volunteer in charge ofstudent volunteers formation andcampus conscientization pro-grams. She then completed an MAin Social Psychology at ClaremontGraduate University in California.She believes that her training andexperience as a social psychologisthelps her discern the training anddevelopment needs of fellow fac-ulty members. She feels that herfacilitating style and belief in thedynamics of participation fit rightin with her work of facilitating andsupporting learning. Lastly, shebelieves the medium is the mes-sage, hence the need for formingteachers who themselves serve astheir students’ formators. Aca-demic, spiritual, and social aspectsof teacher formation must all beaddressed in order for the TFI tofulfill its objectives.

Leland Joseph R. de la Cruz, di-rector of the Development Stud-ies Program and assistant profes-sor, exudes a quiet air of confi-dence which underlies the compe-tence and wide range of experi-ence that he brings to his new roleof Coordinator for Faculty SocialInvolvement. The post is a recentlycreated one that fits him to a “T,”given his engagement with socialinvolvement and developmentwhich goes back to his under-graduate days at the Ateneo. Hisnew post is an apt recognition ofhis ability to bridge the academicand social development worlds. Itseems he has always been at theforefront of getting students andfaculty members involved in socialissues.

As Coordinator for Faculty SocialInvolvement, Leland’s main re-sponsibility is to support existinginitiatives for faculty social involve-ment. Recent examples of theseinitiatives include developmentwork with the Dumagats spear-headed by Roberto Conrado“Bobby” Guevarra of the Theol-ogy Department and the engage-ment of several faculty membersfrom different disciplines with thePamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina(PLMar). The group providesconsultancies gratis on a wide rangeof PLMar’s policies, procedures,and other school concerns. A sec-ond task is to spearhead more ini-tiatives for faculty social involve-ment such as involvement in the

coming 2007 elections and the in-tegration of social involvementinto the curriculum.

Leland uses the catch phrase “Pro-fessionals for Development” toemphasize that social involvementas intrinsic to one’s work. Socialinvolvement is not to be thoughtof as an “extracurricular” involve-ment, and neither is there be a needto go beyond one’s specialization.He strongly believes that profes-sionals can make a more lastingimpact in development work whenthey bring their competencies tothe fore, and that competence willmake a better and more lastingimpact than good intentions alone.To promote social involvementwith both faculty members andstudents alike, he works closelywith the Office of Social Concernand Involvement and the LoyolaSchools Committee on Social In-volvement.

Leland is constantly inspired by thework Ateneo alumni do and thequality of schools they end up in.He observes that they all have asense of pride in what they, oftendespite heavy workloads and lowpay. Naturally, Leland’s academiclife and personal aspirations areclosely intertwined. One of hisguiding philosophies goes, “it isenough for good people not to dogood effectively in order for evilto reign.” Thus, he continues topush students and fellow facultymembers to truly become “profes-sionals for others.” He pusheshimself as well and is excited abouthis graduate school activities at theSociology Department of the Uni-versity of the Philippines where heis pursuing doctoral studies. On amore personal note, he also enjoyswatching the development of hisdaughter Sinta, who at three yearsold is now growing fast and setto begin preschool. eegl

Leland Joseph R. de la CruzCoordinator For Faculty Social Involvement

The current Research Coordinatorfor the Loyola Schools considersherself relatively new to theAteneo. Liane Peña Alampay,Ph.D., Assistant Professor at thePsychology Department, has beenwith the Ateneo only six years.Prior to joining the Ateneo, shetaught at the University of the Phil-ippines in Diliman where she com-pleted both an AB and MA in Psy-chology. Her doctorate degree isin Human Development and Fam-ily Studies from the PennsylvaniaState University.

Liane’s major assignment is to coor-dinate the research activities of LSfaculty members. She also acts as li-aison between faculty members andthe Loyola Schools administrationand the University Research Coun-cil (URC). It is her job to ensure thatfaculty members have opportunitiesand activities that would help fostera more scholarly research culture inthe University. The first few weeksof the semester found her feelingsthings out and identifying the steps,activities, and priorities to be dealtwith this schoolyear. Among the im-mediate tasks at hand is preparing acall for proposals for the annual URCand Loyola Schools Scholarly Workgrants.

Liane is immersed in research workof her own as well. She is a senior

researcher for the Ateneo GradeSchool and High School ResiliencyResearch Project with the AteneoWellness Center, working with ateam of colleagues from the Psy-chology Department. She is alsocurrently a project director of vari-ous research activities in the areasof parenting, adolescent develop-ment, and juvenile delinquency andprevention. Active as she is in re-search, she is fully aware of the is-sues, challenges, and rewards in-volved in being a researcher. Thisawareness is one of the strengthsthat she brings to her post of LSResearch Coordinator. Anotherstrength comes of living a typicalfaculty members’ lifestyle—jug-gling teaching, advising, adminis-trative work, and consultancy—which allows her to identify withfellow teachers. She also believesthat having graduated from a uni-versity with a very strong researchculture has also given her trainingand experience that might be help-ful in the Ateneo context.

Balancing her academic life withher family life is also a constantchallenge and keeps her on hertoes. Apart from being a full-timeacademic, she is also a wife andmother busy bringing up her broodof three young children Joachim,6, Javi,4, and Sarah, 2. eegl

Liane Peña Alampay, PhDCoordinator for Research

If there is anyone who is most pre-pared to take on the job of plan-ning and coordinating spiritual for-mation activities for faculty, it isFlordeliza “Flor” F. Francisco,PhD, an Associate Chair and As-sistant Professor at the Mathemat-ics Department, School of Scienceand Engineering. When VicePresident for the Loyola Schools,Ma. Assunta C. Cuyegkeng, PhD,offered her the position of ProgramCoordinator for Spiritual Formation,Flor was excited yet also apprehen-sive. After much discernment, sheaccepted the job because “I believeit is important for us to have a spiri-tual life to which we can anchorourselves and from which willspring every commitment, deci-

sion, and service we will under-take.” She declares, “spirituality isan important part of the Ateneocommunity life. It is also some-thing which is close to my heart.”

A 1984 BS Mathematics graduate(Honorable Mention and Depart-mental Awardee) and a 1991 PhDMathematics graduate of theAteneo de Manila, Flor is perhapsone of very few mathematicianswho combines mathematics andspirituality with calculated ease andproficiency. From her college daysin Gabay serving as tutor, financeofficer, and formation and educa-tion officer to her early years aspermanent faculty of the AteneoMathematics Department partici-

pating in faculty retreats and con-scientiously doing the SpiritualExercises at least once a year, toher transitory life as a religious, andfinally back in Ateneo and math-ematics teaching as an INTACTadviser as well, Flor sincerely be-lieves “that I have something tocontribute in this development ofspirituality even by just providinga venue for sharing with each otherin our faith journey.”

True to her character, Flor prefersto think that she is merely continu-ing what has been set in motionby the Office of Mission, Identityand Organizational Development(OMIOD) for the faculty. “Thecolloquium already has a workingtemplate. I am looking at this andthinking of what may be revisedor improved to make it moremeaningful and attractive to [fac-ulty],” she wistfully reveals. Someof her initial plans include reflec-tion-fellowship sessions leading toreflection-discussion sessions to beled by fellow faculty whom she willtap. A quiet, humble, and down-to-earth individual, Flor, who hasembarked on a personal mission todevelop expertise in research sur-rounding effective mathematicsteaching, eagerly looks forward toa fruitful year as part of the LoyolaSchools administrative team. cpvy

MatteoRicciHallopensitsdoors

The Matteo Ricci Study Hallopened its doors to LoyolaSchools students in late June2006. Designed with the stu-dents’ welfare in mind, the two-story building has an area of2,472 sqm and is located betweenScience Education ComplexBuildings B and C.

It provides comfortable and quietstudy spaces apportioned over a1,560 sqm area with a 230-per-son seating capacity. The air-con-ditioned study hall provides in-dividual study carrels on both lev-els and group study areas that canaccommodate more than 60 stu-dents at a time. These areas areideal for group discussions orcourse/project work without dis-turbing other students. Laptopusers will enjoy the convenienceof a wi-fi connection that linksthem to the digital resources they

need when they are workingonline.

The Matteo Ricci Study Hall’s ar-chitectural design complementsthe structures in the Science Edu-cation Complex and other neigh-boring buildings, such as thePLDT-Convergent TechnologiesCenter (PLDT-CTC) and theJohn Gokongwei School of Man-agement (JGSOM) buildings.

It features a wide staircase at theentrance where students can re-lax while waiting for their nextclass. The first floor providescomputer access to the RizalLibrary’s scholarly informationresources through the Internet.

In addition, the building has twostrategically located exhibit halls,one on each level, where studentscan display their course projects,

and a large balcony where theycan eat and drink as they discussand study.

The building is names after Ital-ian Jesuit missionary Fr. MatteroRicci, SJ, who was the founder ofthe Catholic Missions in China.Ricci was successful in spreadingCatholic Christianity to a largelyConfucian and Buddhist countryof his time through his deep un-derstanding of Chinese cultureand his broad knowledge of sci-ence, mathematics, astronomy,geography, and literature. He wasrecognized as a scientist of greatversatility and a pioneer of cul-

tural relations between China andthe West.

The construction of the MatteoRicci Study Hall began in August2004. The building temporarilyhoused the accredited student or-ganizations of the universitywhen Colayco Hall was demol-ished to give way to the construc-

tion of the four-storey Manuel VPangilinan Center for StudentLeadership which has now beeninaugurated as well.

The study hall is open from 7:30am to 9:30pm Mondays to Fri-days, and from 8:00 am to 6:00pm on Saturdays. lacacha,www.ateneo.edu

BookedOn the ground floor of thenewly inaugurated Manuel VPangilinan Center for StudentLeadership is the Loyola Schoolsbookstore. It is the first of itskind in the campus, and is de-signed to meet the need of theLoyola Schools community for a“one-stop shop.”

Karen Berthelsen Cardenas, Di-rector of the Office of Researchand Publications (ORP) and con-current manager of the Book-store, likens it to bookstores atuniversities in Europe and theUnited States. The Loyola Schoolsbookstore is essentially “an outletfor everything the school pro-duces.” Thus, it carries not onlythe textbooks for the coursestaught at the Loyola Schools butalso faculty publications, gift items(postcards, knick-knacks, and

stuffed toys), gift accessories(boxes, wrappers, and ribbons),supplies (pens, paper, CDs, andnotebooks), and merchandisefrom the A-Shop (mugs, umbrel-las, shirts all stamped “Ateneo”).Soon, the John GokongweiSchool of Management will beselling more merchandise there. It

also offers photocopying andbinding services. The coffee barhas yet to open, but already thereare a number of groups vying forthe right to operate it. A loungearea, with an entertainment sys-tem, is at the far end of the ex-pansive bookstore. The idea is forstudents to watch videos adaptedfrom books. Small classes can re-serve the space and use it for filmviewings. It is apparently drawingthe most attention from visitors.

Already, business is brisk, thoughthe staff is skeletal (Djoanna andJeremy are being “borrowed”from ORP). Cardenas credits thisto the convenience afforded byand the visibility of the venue.

Students can get what they wantunder a single roof, and that rightwhere they are wont to mingle.The ORP, the bookstore’s prede-cessor, had more an office ratherthan a retail-store façade. Thisbookstore, in contrast, invitescustomers by its very appearance.

The bookstore hopes to sellbooks by more non-Ateneo pub-lishers (currently, it sells mostly

publications by the Jesuit Com-munications, the University Press,and the ORP) and to produce itsown line of merchandise in thefuture. Whether or not it does,however, it is almost certain thatstudents’ reply to the question,“Where did/can you get that?” inthe coming years will be uniform:“At the bookstore.” jochua

The JGSOM Student Enter-prise Center (JSEC), designed asa showcase for student-ownedand managed businesses, is a first.As JGSOM Dean Rudy Ang says“We’re not following a trend inbusiness education, rather, we’resetting the trend. I don’t know ofany school that has a retail andservice area populated exclusivelyby student businesses.” Locatedbetween the SEC and CTC build-ings and slated to begin opera-tions in the second semester ofthis schoolyear, the 12-stall JSECserves two purposes: as a labora-tory where students can hone

their entrepreneurial skills; and asa space for students to relax, eat,or just plain hang out. Mr. Angpoints out that with the campus’“center of gravity” having shiftedto the SEC-CTC-JGSOM area,an additional livable space isneeded as an alternative eatingand resting area to the collegecafeteria located in Gonzaga Hall.

Aiming for a good mix of stu-dent businesses at the JSEC,JGSOM has set out criteria forprospective JSEC tenants whowill enjoy subsidized rental rates.Only student-run businesses will

be allowed to occupy stalls atJSEC, with lease terms of onesemester to one year. To be con-sidered for JSEC, a business mustbe appropriate for a school set-ting, and must fit well with thecommunity’s needs. Five out ofthe 12 stalls are equipped tohouse food businesses, with therest to be assigned to businessesserving other needs.

Mr. Ang is optimistic about theJSEC’s possibilities as a learningfacility for student entrepreneurs.Asked if JGSOM business own-ers will be given priority over

non-JGSOM ones, he remarksthat better proposals will win ev-ery time, whether or not they arefrom JGSOM student entrepre-neurs. “There are no entitlementsin the real world! They have tocompete for spaces in the malljust as they will have to in anybusiness environment.” Thisgoes for running their businessesprofessionally as well. Mr. Angbelieves that although they arestill students, the JSEC tenantsmust serve their customers pro-fessionally. “Our students need torun their businesses as real pro-fessionals,” he asserts.

He is realistic about the possibil-ity that some businesses may notsucceed, and says losing moneyis part of the learning process.“We hope to have many successstories, but expect some failuresas well. That’s okay, becausepeople learn as much from fail-ure as they do from success.”With student entrepreneurslearning real-life lessons fromreal-life profit and loss, the JSEClooks like a trend that’s here tostay.

2006 Ateneo Art Awards winners announcedThe Ateneo Art Gallery hasannounced the winners of the2006 Ateneo Art Awards.Poklong Anading, Mideo Cruz,and Maya Muñoz were pro-claimed winners on August 8,2006 in a formal ceremony at theRockwell Tent. The Awards wereconferred to the three young Fili-pino visual artists for their out-standing contribution to the defi-nition and development of mod-ern and contemporary Philippineart.

Anading won for the show “Ano-nymity” held at the Finale ArtGallery, and was also given the2006 Ateneo Art Gallery SydneyStudio Residency Grant whichwill provide him with roundtripairfare, allowance, accommoda-tion, and a work studio for threeweeks, as well as an invitation toexhibit at The Cross Art Projects,a leading alternative art space.Cruz won for the show “Ban-quet” held at the BulwagangFernando Amorsolo, CulturalCenter of the Philippines and atthe Substation gallery inSingapore. Muñoz won for theshow “Closer” held at the HirayaGallery.

The other artists short-listed for theAwards were Yason Banal, LenaCobangbang, Marina Cruz, Antondel Castillo, Bembol dela Cruz,Wawi Navarroza, Rodel Tapaya, JayTicar, and Jevijoe Vitug.

Navarroza took home the firstever Art Smart Texter’s ChoiceAward for her exhibition“Polysaccharide: The DollhouseDrama.” Muñoz and del Castilloreceived the second and thirdhighest number of SMS votes re-spectively.

“Outbound,” the theme of thisyear’s Awards exhibition, was in-

spired by the winning and short-listed artists’ tendency to eschewconservative acceptance as theywork beyond society’s comfortzones—challenging the statusquo, reflecting, responding and,indeed, underscoring theFilipino’s experiences and reac-tions to the vicissitudes of theeveryday.

Heaps of howls and heartylaughter greeted the shows of AngAksidenteng Kamatayan ng IsangAnarkista, Tanghalang Ateneo’sfirst production of SY 2006-2007,now on a Metro Manila campustour. The show was originallystaged from July 21-August 5 at theRizal Mini-Theater, LoyolaSchools.

The play, written by Nobel PrizeWinner Dario Fo and translatedinto Filipino by Joseph dela Cruz,is a devastating satire on policecorruption: it tells the true storyof an Italian anarchist whomysteriously fell to his death fromthe window of a police station.Police investigations rule the fallto be an “accidental death.” Thepublic thinks otherwise but ispowerless to reopen the case.Anarkista conducts its own inquiry,steered by a fool (simply namedthe Maniac) who, through the useof farcical comedy, exposes thepolice cover-up conspiracy.

Audiences responded with intelli-gence and glee, quickly picking upthe wit of the lines and politicalreferences and enjoying the cast’smany comic routines. “The anticsremind you of Charles Chaplainmovies,” one viewer said. “It’s likeShakespeare or Swift,” one teacherremarked, “you can appreciate iton two levels: the lofty and thepopular.” Theater reviewers weregenerous in their praise. TitoValiente, writing for Business Mir-ror (August 8, 2006), noted that“The members of TanghalangAteneo (captured) the political airof Fo turning it into a night thatwas splendid…” And Edsel-Thadeus O. Lorete of the DailyTribune (August 19, 2006) statedthat “Aksidente is a must-see playfor anyone looking for a fresh per-spective on Philippine politics.”

Students quickly expressed theirdelight. One wrote:”nakakatawangunit nakakabagabag, malinaw angmensahe at maayos na naihayag ang po-litical humor.” Many agreed the playwas “timely,” “fun to watch,” “hi-larious,” and “right on target” inpoking fun at the police and gov-ernment officials.” Still anotherstudent said: “mainit-init pa talagaang mga isyu na iniharap dito sakakatwang mga sitwasyon. Magalingang pagsalin at paglalagay ng

contemporaryong hugis at himig angdulang ito ni Dario Fo.”

The references to contemporaryPhilippine politics are the handi-work of director Ricardo Abad andtranslator Joseph dela Cruz, whohave localized the play as play-wright Fo encourages others to doin their own productions. Abadalso adapted the movement andgestures from commedia dell’arte, atraditional Italian style of acting,to give the comedy a “meta-theat-rical effect” where the goings onof the play (including the actors’frequent addresses to the audience)are not to be taken literally.

Set, costumes, light and musiccomplemented the action. Musicdesigner Ruben Reyes enlisted ajazz trio (with himself as bassist)to perform live and follow thecomic business of the actors. Na-tional Artist Salvador Bernal cos-tumed the actors in understatedbusiness wear, as well as created anelegant and monochromatic set,with matching lighting design byJonjon Villareal, that enabled theriotous comedy to surface withease.

Audiences unanimously praisedthe actors, with the best compli-ment coming from theater artistswho lauded the “ensemble play-ing” of the actors, usually a diffi-cult feat in theater productions.The “powerhouse cast” consists ofRonan Capinding as the Maniac,Joseph dela Cruz, Richard deGuzman, Jethro Tenorio, Jesus Jo-seph Ignacio, and Paolo Apagalangwho played the police authorities,and Missy Maramara who, alternat-ing with Ma. Carissa Alejandro,took on the role of a sensuous,sharp-shooting newspaper re-porter.

Anarkista has opened the LoyolaSchools theater year with a bang.The play is now on an extendedrun with shows at the Irwin The-ater and SM Centerpoint to accom-modate students from nearby ar-eas. Shows in Baguio are scheduledin November, while an Englishversion of the play is being orga-nized for a run in Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia this December.

The Department of English of-fers a new program leading to aDoctorate in Philosophy in En-glish Language and Literature.Starting in the second semesterof SY 2006-2007, the PhD pro-gram aims to advance the under-standing of the role of Englishlanguage and literature in society,with particular attention to itsimplications for multilingual andmulti-cultural settings.

The 42-unit PhD ELL programhas four core courses: scholarlymethods, interdisciplinary con-

cepts and procedures, descript-ion(s) of English, and literary andcultural theories. Among the cog-nate courses are researching lan-guage learning and pedagogy; pro-gram management and teacher de-velopment issues, language pro-gram planning and policy making,trends and issues in compositionstudies and pedagogy, literatureand language teaching, narrativetheory, narratives of nationalism,world fiction, ethnopoetics, socialthought and Philippine literature,and constructs of identity in Asianliterature.

Since the Ateneo began active par-ticipation in collegiate varsity sportsin the 1910s, the school has won amultitude of titles in basketball,football, track and field, volleyball,and baseball.

Swimming, on the other hand…well,we competed, but it seems that thecollective memories of swimming asa sport in Ateneo was that we hadformer Olympian Bana Sailani (whois from UST) as the grade schoolswim coach, and Ateneo Sports Hallof Fame athletes were a part of theswimming team—people like ChitoCalvo, Pio Roa, and George York,Jr., to name a few.

It should please everyone to know,then, that there is nothing fishyabout the rise of the Blue Tankersand of the Ateneo swimming pro-gram. But before we get to knowwho they are and where they arenow, it’s best to know where they’recoming from.

It’s a familiar story. Sport has insuf-ficient funding. Little interest isshown in the team and in the sport.Team feels slighted and disrespected.It is not a case of sink or swim. Itwould seem that the Blue Tankerswere sunk from the start.

As a former swimmer, who asked toremain anonymous, recalls, “teamsfrom the other schools would pity

us and shake their heads at us. Theycouldn’t believe that we had no uni-forms to compete in. We went tomeets on our own and had to bringour own food. The only support wegot was from our parents.”

Edward “Awad” Borja, who swamfor both La Salle and UP, was watch-ing the team during one UAAP tour-nament, and he too could not be-lieve his eyes. “They had no uni-forms. The coach was late. Theswimmers didn’t mingle with one an-other. They did stretching exercisesapart from one another. And theyfinished dead last in a field of eight.I knew that there was somethingwrong when Adamson—whichdidn’t even have a pool of its own—beat them.”

The embarrassing finish put intomotion a series of events that wouldeventually pull the team up from thecesspool.

Bemedalled national swimmer EricBuhain was invited to become theSwimming Program Head. The highprofile recruitment of Buhain gen-erated some excitement and atten-tion for the program. However, be-fore he could get his feet wet, he wasoffered the seat of Commissioner ofthe Philippine Sports Commission.

Borja, with his impressive credentialsas national coach and swimmer in

ASEAN and SEA Games as well asthe Palarong Pambansa, saw this as hisopportunity to get into UAAPcoaching. “Ateneo wasn’t my firstchoice to coach,” admits the bespec-tacled coach with a smile. “While itmay have been a little more glamor-ous to coach the traditional swim-ming powers in UST, DLSU and UP,there’s nothing like turning a pro-gram around from last to first place.”He laughs, “by the way, we haven’twon a championship yet, but we’regetting there.” Not even the daunt-ing task of coming up with a pro-gram where there had been none andthe pessimism of naysayers coulddampen Borja’s enthusiasm: “As thesaying goes, the only way to go whenyou’re down is up.”

Under the guidance of the Univer-sity Athletics Office, a program wasdrafted. Incorporated in the pro-gram was a grassroots componentthat would allow the school to breedchampions. “Too common a prob-lem we have with recruits from theoutside is that they have difficultycoping with the school’s rigorousacademic standards,” observesRicardo “Ricky” Palou, the formerBlue Eagle tapal king who has over-seen the development of theuniversity’s sports program in the lastfew years together with the indefati-gable Jose “Jun-Jun” Capistrano, Jr..“Developing our athletes in thegrade school level will acclimatethem to the educational system andalso develop team chemistry even ifswimming competitions are mostlysingles competition.”

That was a start, but there were manymore things that needed to be ad-dressed: athletic scholarships, a regu-lar training facility, equipment, andfunds. “We all knew that the programwould take several years before westarted to see the fruits of our col-lective labor,” remarks Borja. “Timewe had. Money we didn’t.”

Pangilinan, Eugenio Lopez III, ArbenSantos and other prominent Ateneoalumni, Pedro had helped bring backthe excitement and championship toBlue Eagle basketball. But a littleknown fact about Pedro was that hewas a member of the Ateneo swim-ming team in his college days.

“He asked us what we needed to givethe team a chance to win a champi-onship,” relates Borja. “We providedhim with a long shopping list, buthe came through with perhaps thebiggest item of all.”

The cutting edge Loyola SchoolsSwimming Pool is the practice facil-ity Ateneo swimming teams neverhad, until now. Teams would prac-tice in the grade school pool, a situ-ation which brought its own set ofproblems. When the grade schoolhad no classes, the Blue Tankerscouldn’t practice. When there wereholidays, the facility was also closed.

A PhP 5 million donation helpedcover the cost of the state-of-the-art facility that now gives the Ateneoswimming teams an immeasurableboost. “The pool is a fulfillment ofmy dream to give back to theschool,” says Pedro who knows whatit is like not to have the facilities andthe funds to compete. “And havingswam for the school, I know what itis like not to have support.”

The effect of the newly inaugurated28-meter, 8-lane, roofed, no-waveswimming pool on the team hasbeen tremendous. As men’s teamcaptain Jonas Ramos affirms, “nowwe can compete on even terms.”

Borja extols the advantages of thenew facility. “A no-wave pool meansthat there is less water resistancefrom a deep pool. When you swimin the outer lanes, you get everyone’swash and it bounces back into thelanes. Other schools have visited thenew facility and have verbally agreedto hold a tournament here after theUAAP. The no-wave pool will meanthat we will see some faster timesfrom all.”

Last season, the men’s and women’steams respectively finished third andfourth in the standings. Despite los-ing some key faces, morale is high

and both teams figure to better Sea-son 68’s finishes.

“We’ve got some new swimmers tocomplement the comebacking vet-erans like Raem Puno and JanMichael Chiu,” reveals Ramos. “Wehave Evan Uy, Bruce Sing, ChicoGueco, and Jan Formalejo whoshould make an immediate impact.”

Team Captain Ramos incidentally isonly a sophomore. Says Borja ofRamos’ appointment, “I don’t be-lieve in seniority. It’s who goes outthere every day to do the job.”

Ironically, it was the Lady Tankerswho got the job done first. Previ-ously, no Atenean—male or fe-male—had ever landed a gold medalin either NCAA or UAAP seniorsswimming competitions. The bestever Ateneo swimming finish was asilver in 1991.

In 2003, Karen Tiambeng won goldin the 400-meter individual medleywhile teammate Hiyas Adviento gar-nered a silver and bronze. In 2004,Nikki Santiago swam away with sixgold medals, with three of thoseUAAP records. That same year, thewomen’s team also won two relaycompetitions that were also bothUAAP records.

This year, they figure to add moremedals to the over-all tally countwhen Southeast Asian Gamesbronze medalist Nikki Santiago re-turns to the pool (she missed thewhole of last season while trainingin China). Lyllian Banzon, anothersuper sophomore who likewise cap-tains the team, last season’s rookieof the year Claudine Chiongbian,Heidi Ong, Bianca Uy, RozelleSarmiento, and Hiyas Adviento willalso be on hand for a podium run.

“I think that we’ve come a long, longway from those days when eachplayer had only PhP50 in taxi fareto go to the meets at the Rizal Me-morial Coliseum,” smiles Borja as hisswimmers mill about Manang’s on ahot Saturday noon. “But then, westill have quite a bit to go.” From thelooks of things, it’s a length that’llbe easy to swim. A few years ago, the Blue Eagleslost Larry Fonacier to a season-ending injury early in the firstround. Instead of collapsing, theteam which still had more thanenough talent to buck the KingEagle’s absence swept the firstround before ultimately crashingdown in flames towards the end ofthe second round all the way to theplay-offs.

For this year’s edition of the LadyEagles, losing eight members fromlast year’s championship teamseemed too huge a loss to recoverfrom more so even make it backto the Final Four. But nobody toldthe team that they couldn’t makeit back to the Promised Land. Ledby holdovers Kat Quimpo, AJBarracoso, Cassie Tioseco, CheryllNgo, and Kariz Javier plus keypick-ups, the Lady Eagles defiedthe odds to stay ahead of the fieldalmost all season long.

“Our outlook from the start of theseason was we weren’t the defendingchamps,” explained mentor JohnFlores. “We’re really not. It’s almostan entirely new team. We’ve goteight rookies after all.” AddedTioseco, one of this year’s tri-cap-tains, “Where we – Kat, Cheryll,and me – used to be “the babies”of the team, we’re suddenly theteam’s senior citizens (laughs).”

Without the steady stream ofpoints provided by the graduatedPipay Villanueva, Tin Chua, andDanica Caynap among many oth-ers, the Lady Eagles turned to their

pillars of strength in their pair ofwondrous forward-centers inCassie Tioseco and AJ Barracoso.The duo was a nightmare of a chal-lenge for opposing teams. If onewas double teamed down low, theball was swung to the weak sidewhere the other would barge in fora bank shot off the window. Andon defense, they forced teams tochange their shot. The twin towerthreat was particularly fascinatingfor John Flores for it allowed newlypromoted Treena Limengco (fromTeam B) to reprise PipayVillanueva. “It used to be Pipayand Tin who used to cut towardsthe basket,” observed the coach.“And they did that so well. Butwe’re not losing that dimension be-cause Turbo Treena – as we’venicknamed her does that just aswell for us.”

With the backcourt of Quimpoand Ngo plus promising back-upsin rookies Mariana Lopa, HelenaIndigne, Krizanne Ty and RonnaCo with emerging outside threatMaggie Magdangal, the team wasprimed and loaded for another runand for the years to come.

But the future seemed now as theLady Eagles with the “non-defend-ing champions” mindset instilledby their tough loving coach, playedinspired team ball sans the pres-sure to finish the first round witha 5-1 record. Their only loss wasinflicted by the resurgent USTLady Tigresses who were led byMarichu Bacaro who was supposedto suit up for Ateneo but was let

go towards the España-basedsquad after an admission defi-ciency.

“Not bad,” nodded one ardentLady Eagles supporter as the teammarched towards another improb-able finish.

“We’ve still got a long way to go,”cautioned third year player AJBarracoso. “Even with out La Salle,this is a tough field we have to playin. We just can’t take anyone forgranted.”

At 8-1, disaster struck. KatQuimpo who had ably filled in thestarting point guard role vacated byDanica Caynap broke three bonesin her hand. In practice no less. “Itwas a freak injury as she fell on herhand,” recalled Flores as he triedto hide his concern. “But we’llcope.”

The ball, the backcourt, and theLady Eagles’ continued drive to-wards a play-off berth now hingedon the quarterbacking of Ngo andLopa. “We went from the mindsetthat we weren’t the defendingchamps to “let’s take it one game at atime,” said Tioseco as the team pre-pared to face the dangerous FEULady Tams and first round tor-mentor UST in succession. But theloss of Quimpo was telling for theLoyola cagebelles found it hard toset up their offense going muchless bring down the ball. The lossto UST a second time aroundclearly showed the opposition onhow to beat the Lady Eagles sansQuimpo – press Ateneo and therewas no way the twin towers wouldhurt you.

After two successive losses, theLady Eagles pummeled UE to fin-ish at 9-3 to close out the elimina-tion round. “Well, we achieved our

goal of making it to the FinalFour),” said an elated Flores afterthe UE game. “Now it’s all aboutthat crucial twice-to-beat advan-tage.”

Tied with FEU, the two teamssquared off in a play-off for the 2nd

seed (UST by virtue of the win-over-the-other rule finished at thetop of the standings). All seemedwell as the Lady Eagles were com-fortably ahead after some 25 min-utes of basketball when suddenlynot only couldn’t they buy a shot,but they couldn’t get the ball acrossthe half-court line. Even so, theLady Eagles still had a chance to pullout with the win, but missed chari-ties, turnovers and a suddenly po-rous defense (unclogged becausethe Lady Tams were hitting all theiroutside shots) spelled the differ-ence. With the game on the line,they still couldn’t buy a break as theLady Tams hit a game winning shotoff an offensive rebound to snatchthe twice-to-beat advantage.

As the Lady Tams celebrated theirentry into the Final Four as thenumber two seed, quite a few LadyEagles buried their faces into theirtowels to hide their tears. ButFlores would have none of it as herefused to throw in his towel. Pull-ing his two remaining playing cap-tains together, he offered terse en-couragement, “Babawi tayo.”

Reports that the Lady Eagles’ cam-paign was dead were grossly exag-gerated. Displaying championshippride, the Lady Eagles called on afamiliar staple of its success in thepost game of Cassie Tioseco anda new weapon in Treena Limengcoto get back at the Morayta-basedteam. Bucking the press and theodds, Ateneo cruised to a 63-53victory to set up a win-or-go-homeknockout affair.

In a tightly contested match, thegame bore striking resemblance tothe play-off match of two gamesago. With Treena Limengco firingon all cylinders, the Lady Eaglesfound themselves tied with FEUat 44-all time down to a two-pos-session ball game. But the LadyTams’ Irine Rivera, for the secondtime in three games, hit the gamewinning shot over the outstretchedhand of Ateneo’s frontline to ex-act a measure of revenge for heralma mater whose men’s seniorbasketball team earned the dubi-ous distinction of being the firstdefending champion not to makethe final four as it was ousted bythe Ateneo Blue Eagles late in thesecond round.

As Coach John Flores wrapped hisarms around his players who weptunabashedly, he once more offereda terse encouragement to his cap-tains. “Babawi tayo next year.”

Post Script:The Lady Eagles much like theirbrother teams the Blue Eagles andBlue Eaglets were not picked bypreseason prognosticators to wintheir respective cage crowns. Otherteams were tagged on the premiseof intact line-ups and star recruits.But all three teams have played wellabove the norm to lead the way formuch of the season if not thewhole season.

Despite falling short, the LadyEagles have shown their mettle anda bright outlook for future cam-paigns. And at the end of it al, theyplayed the way defending champi-ons should.

due to questionable officiating.As the teams came back from thehalftime break, Ateneo regainedpart of its composure and beganplaying through what at timeswere very difficult to swallowcalls.

“We were able to overcome the bad callsof the referees by sticking together,”says three-point specialist Chris-topher John Tiu.

As the game went down the wire,it became glaringly obvious thatneither team was going to give upeasily.

However, “We really prepared for ourgames [against Adamson],” saysEagle Roel Aurelio Escueta, add-ing, “We knew that they are a reallystrong team, and they execute reallywell.”

And the Eagles definitely lookedwell-prepared for MVP candidateand Adamson big man Bono,who began making big shots inthe 4th quarter — Ateneo an-swered with amazing shots oftheir own. In a game that sawaction up to the last second, theEagles prevailed 76-73 and bidadieu to the tenacious Falcons

and their high hopes of extend-ing their Final Four run and per-haps reaching the Finals.

The Boys from Loyola will nowface the winner of the Final Fourmatch-up between the Universityof the East Warriors and theUniversity of Santo Tomas Ti-gers.

“Judging from the game last Sunday(against Adamson), games will be alot tougher. We really have to step upto another level,” says Co-captainEscalona. Specifically, “Rabeh (Al-Hussaini) has to get those reboundsand Chris (Tiu) needs to connect more[from the three-point area] so wecan really get into the game, and thesecond five needs to step up as well,”adds Co-captain Intal. “And asteam captain, I need to keep on remind-ing the team and coach to play througheven the worst calls, it’s useless to com-plain.”

“Given the choice, I want to play UE,”says Intal, “but we will be ready ei-ther way.” Tiu and Escueta agree:it does not matter which teamAteneo will play in the Finals. “We

will adjust our game accordingly,” saysTiu with a smile. “But it is alwaysone game at a time,” adds Intal.

“[I am] very excited about the Finals,I have never played in a Finalsgame before,” says Tiu, whoalong with majority of his team-mates was not part of Ateneo’smuch-storied 2002 Champion-ship Team. “People had doubts aboutour team initially but now we are here,”adds the Management Engineer-ing Senior.

“Of course, I’m really excited,” saysCo-captain and MVP candidateIntal, “but the pressure right now issomething else, grabe,” he states.The three captains were all intheir rookie year in 2002. “Whenwe were rookies, there was very littlepressure, but now… We just really needto win,” he says with a nervouslaugh. “Doug (Kramer), Macky(Escalona), and I are where EnricoVillanueva and the others were, andthe pressure is really intense.

Focus will inevitably be on thethree co-captains and how theywill play during the Finals. “We

have known each other since freshmanyear,” says Intal, and this translatesextremely well on the court. “Weknow how each one will play; we knowour roles – we have the others’ backson court.”

What of their multi-titled headcoach, Norman Black? “I have fullconfidence and trust in Coach Norman,after all, he IS Norman Black,” saysIntal matter-of-factly about theman he fondly calls his Mentor.

And what does he have to say tothe Blue and White Nation?“They’ve really come out this year, dur-ing the game against Adamson, somany people watched, the Araneta wasalmost full. I really want to thank themfor all the support; I think they all knowhow thankful we really are. Hopefully,we get the championship this year,” saysthe gracious co-captain optimis-tically.

It is official. The Ateneo de Ma-nila Blue Eagles have soared intothe UAAP Season 69 Men’s Bas-ketball Finals after beating theAdamson Falcons, 76-73. It willbe Ateneo’s first Finals appear-ance since battling the Far East-ern University Tamaraws in 2003.“We can’t believe we’re here,” say Co-captains John Christopher Intaland Douglas Kramer.

After sweeping the first round ofeliminations (see related article), theEagles buckled down to businessagainst Kenneth Bono and the dan-gerous Adamson University Fal-cons Squad. Ateneo barelysqueezed past the Falcons, but pre-vailed in nail-biting fashion at 66-65. Next up for the Eagles were theneighbors from down the street,the University of the PhilippinesFighting Maroons. The gameproved almost identical to Ateneo’sfirst round win, as they once againtrounced the Marvin Cruz-led boysfrom Diliman, 98-88.

The next game saw a lax AteneoFive go up against the eager Uni-versity of Santo Tomas Growl-ing Tigers, who were still hurtingfrom a first round massacre at thehands of the Eagles. When thesmoke cleared at the final buzzer,the Espana-based squad was ju-bilant, as the scoreboard read 80-88 and signaled the end ofAteneo’s winning streak. On theirnext assignment, the Eaglesbounced right back into the wincolumn by ripping the NationalUniversity Bulldogs apart, 106-76.

The Hail Mary Squad’s subse-quent opponents were the de-fending champions, the Far East-ern University Tamaraws. Aheart-stopping 70-68 win by theEagles crushed the Tamaraws’hopes of defending their title, asthe Eagles definitively shut thedoor on FEU’s prospects ofreaching even just the Final Fourstage of the competition.

A look back As we go to press, the Blue Eagles have just absorbed a heartbreaking championship loss to the USTGrowling Tigers. It was a season full of heart and furious to the finish. Join us as we look back at thebasketball teams’ Season 69—the drama, the heroics, the spirit, the ONE BIG FIGHT.

Eagles Barge intoUAAP Season 69 Finals

The last game of the secondround was against the Universityof the East Red Warriors, just twodays after the grueling match-upagainst FEU. The tired-lookingEagles played catch-up to theWarriors for most of the gameand were down by as much as 23points. A late run sparked by sec-ond half heroics by Co-captainIntal pulled the Eagles within asolitary point. However, the runhad started too late, and theEagles ran out of time, but notwithout scaring the living day-lights out of the Warriors. Thegame ended at 75-78, and it wason to the Final Four stage for theHail Mary Squad and the teamfrom Recto.

The top-ranked Blue Eagles thenfaced the fourth-ranked team, theAdamson University Falcons, lastSeptember 17, 2006 at theAraneta Coliseum. The Eagles’clean 8-seasonwinning streakagainst Adamsonlooked threatened at times, in ahighly emotional game that saweven usually cool-headed CoachNorman Black lose his temper

No, it was not an Ateneo-LaSalle showdown. But it was still ajam-packed Araneta Coliseumlast September 10 as students ofthe seven schools participating inthis year’s UAAP tournamentscheered on their respective PepSquad for the 2006 UAAP Cheer-ing Competition.

UAAP Sports Anchor BoomGonzales hosted the festivities,with help from the CourtsideReporters of the differentschools, including Ateneo’s LiaCruz. Each school was given sixminutes to perform their routine.

The University of the East PepSquad performed first followedby the National University PepSquad, the University of the Phil-ippines Pep Squad, the Univer-sity of Santo Tomas SalinggawiDance Troupe, the Ateneo BlueBabble Battalion, the Far East-ern University Pep Squad, andthe Adamson University PepSquad was the last to perform.

After months of conceptuali-zation, preparations, andtrainings, the Babble showed thewhole Araneta what they got.The performance of the BlueBabble Battalion was an improve-ment from last year’s routine,

where they placed seventh. Thisyear, they incorporated rhythmicgymnastics and some Grease-in-spired steps to their routine. Oneof the changes they made was theinclusion of the lifters in thewhole routine. This year, the guysdid more than just lifting the girlsin the air; they also danced thewhole routine through.

This year’s crowd turnout wasalso the biggest so far. TheAteneans cheered on their favor-ite cheerdancers and lifters. Theevent gave the Ateneans a venueto cheer on the cheerleaders whohave rooted for the different var-sity teams of Ateneo. This time,the spotlight was on the BlueBabble Battalion.

The winners of the competitionreceived a trophy and cash prizes:60 thousand pesos for the secondrunner-up, which went to theUniversity of the Philippines; 90thousand pesos for the first run-ner-up, the Far Eastern Univer-sity Pep Squad; and 150 thousandpesos for the Champion, theUniversity of Santo TomasSalinggawi Dance Troupe.

Lady Eagles Bow Out of Title Contention

September 17 marked the endof the road for the Ateneo LadyEagles as they dropped therubber match against the FarEastern University LadyTamaraws, 44-46, in the BigDome.

The Lady Eagles were able toexecute good offense in the firstquarter with the star terscombining for 13 points. Nearingthe end of the first 10 minutesof action, the Ateneo crowd wentwild as Coach John Flores pulledKatrina A. Quimpo (IV BS Mgt)off the bench. Quimpo, Ateneo’sfinest pointguard, played for thefirst time since her injury and shewas tagged for an offensive foulin her first minute of play. Thequarter ended with Ateneo ontop, 13-8.

FEU was able to catch up withthe Lady Eagles at the start of thesecond quarter, tying the game at13 all. But Marie Anjelica C.Barracoso (III AB DS) madeback to back baskets that putAteneo back on top. Treena AnneTherese T. Limgenco (III BSMCT) pitched in seven points toAteneo’s cause in the secondquarter. But FEU made a run thatgave them a solitary point lead atthe half, 26-27.

As with their other games, thethird quarter seemed to beAteneo’s weakest quarter. Theirshots could not find the basket

and even theirdefense wentawry. The LadyTams forced the Lady Eagles totake shots from the perimeter.Only Barracoso and Ma. CaterinaCristina R. Lopa (I AB DS) were
