schedule 2002The third generation of double bass players, Born in Montevideo -Uruguay he began his studies with his father. By the age 17, he wasalready Co-principal Bassist with the Porto Alegre Symphony in Brazil, andat the age of 19, he joined the faculty of the Federal University of RioGrande do Norte (Brazil). He completed his Masters and DoctorateDegrees with work under Gary Karr, Julius Levine and Lawrence Wolfe.

As a frequent recitalist and soloist with major symphony orchestras,Milton Masciadri has appeared in Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, UnitedStates, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, England, Mexico, Greece, EasternEurope and Central America. During the summers he teaches at several

international music festivals and dou-ble bass conventions in the UnitedStates, South America and Europe.

He has performed chambermusic and in duo with such artists asGeorge Bolet, Robert Mc Duffie, AldoParisot , Sidney Harth, Gary Karr,Francesco Petracchi, etc.

Masciadri's enthusiasm forenlarging the repertoire of the doublebass has led him to publish and pre-miere works of many contemporaryAmerican and South American com-posers and to make notable contribu-tions of his own with numerous tran-scriptions and arrangements.

As well as maintaining anactive schedule of concerts and masterclasses, Milton Masciadri is currentlyon the faculty of the University ofGeorgia, and is a "Academico" of thePhilharmonic Academy of Bologna -Italy, oldest music school in Europe.

Some of 2000 Masciadri'ssolo performances includedWashington D.C., New York, Los

Angeles, San Diego, Atlanta, Charleston; Belgium, Canada, Italy,Germany, Romania, Greece, Kazakhstan, Russia, Uruguay, Chile, Brazil,Spain, Korea France and Argentina. Masciadri will appear as major judgein several International competitions in Europe, USA and South America

Milton Masciadri performs on a 300 year old Testore double bass;appears in the International Who's Who in Music and solo recordings onDMR, ACA & Fondazione labels. In 1998 he was designated "UnescoArtist for Peace" and holds the Medal of Honor for AcademicAchievements and services to the people of Brazil awarded by the FederalSystem of Universities in Brazil.

PETRACCHI is considered one ofthe world’s leading performers andteachers of the double bass.Francesco Petracchi studied at theSanta Cecília Conservatory, andgraduated with diplomas both incomposition and conducting.

His concert activities have takenhim to the world most importantconcert halls, and many com-posers, such as Mortari, Donatoni,Henze, Rota, and Berio, have dedi-cated works to him. His MasterClasses have been sought after inStockholm, Copenhagen, Siena (atthe Accademia Chigiana), Madri,Oslo, Cincinnati, Barcelona,Salmoneta, Roma, Cremona,Helsinki, Tokyo, Chicago, London,etc. Professor of virtuosite at theConservatoire in Geneva,Switzerland, Petracchi is consid-ered one of the most important liv-ing masters of the double bass. Herecords often and have won thePremio Italia for the musical portionof “A Double Bass in Search ofLove.” He plays on a rare Rossidouble bass.

The Performing Arts Center contains two acoustically superi-or auditoriums: the 1,100-seat Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall,and the 360-seat Ramsey Concert Hall.

The five-story School of Music building has also beendesigned with extensive attention to acoustics. Each studio,rehearsal, and performance space offers students a superiorenvironment in which to study music. There are two per-formance spaces within the School of Music: the 180-seatRobert Edge Recital Hall and the Roger and Phyllis DanczCenter for New Music, a black box multimedia space withstate-of-the-art electronics , lighting, and three compositionstudios. The School of Music has a resident faculty of 50 andoffers degree programs ranging from Bachelor throughDoctorate in the areas of performance, composition, musiceducation, music theory, and music therapy.

The Double Bass department, under the direction of Dr.Milton Masciadri, has a medium enrollment of twelve doublebassists and through a variety of programs focuses on thedevelopment of highly qualified bassists that presently aremembers of and/or participate in orchestras and teachingorganizations in the United States, Europe and SouthAmerica. International exchange programs provide the stu-dents with ample possibilities for performing and teaching inthe summers as well as being regular performers in theSoutheastern performing organizations.
