Les 3 Vallées spreading the skiing bug to adults and children

The last few years has seen a KYVWPU[OLU\TILYVMUL^ZRPLYZ across all French resorts, largely down to beginners’ “fear of learning”, particularly adults: it takes too long, is too difficult, too painful, too tedious, they’re “too old” to learn… In 2011, Les 3 Vallées tackled this problem head on by launching the ¸=HSStLZ,HZ`9PKLY¹ competition to demonstrate

to everyone who has never dared to learn how to ski that ZRPPUNPZ,(:@ This winter Les 3 Vallées is reviving school skiing trips I`ZWYLHKPUN[OLZRPPUNI\N[V`V\UNJOPSKYLU¯

3 Vallées Easy Rider: one family, one season to learn how to ski

Les 3 Vallées is bringing school skiing trips back

A simple observation: fewer school ski trips = fewer skiers…

! For the last 4 years, Les 3 Vallées has proved that contrary to some persistent perceptions, these days SLHYUPUN [V ZRP PZ LHZ` HUK M\U [hanks to developments in equipment, ski lifts, ski runs and teaching methods. ! Thanks to the “3 Vallées Easy Rider” competition, families of beginners from -YHUJL,UNSHUKand Belgium, were taken under the wing of the 3 Vallées, its partners, and resorts for an entire season so they could discover the fun of snowsports in the world’s largest skiing area... The gamble paid off, because today all of the families have become genuine skiing fans who have come back to ski every year since! !;OPZ^PU[LY[OL¸=HSStLZ,HZ`9PKLY¹JVTWL[P[PVUPZ[HRPUNWSHJLPU)LSNP\T

! Last winter, Les 3 Vallées invited HWYPTHY`ZJOVVSJSHZZfrom Lyon to one of Courchevel’s snowsports teaching facilities. 22 urban children were given the chance to KPZJV]LY[OLQV`ZVM[OLTV\U[HPUZOn the programme for their trip: skiing lessons, ice-skating, snowshoe walks through the forest, a range of entertainment and opportunities to meet young resort locals. ! This winter, ^L»]LYLWLH[LK[OLZJOLTLand extended it throughout the ski area, so ZJOVVSNYV\WZfrom all over France will have the change to spend a week in a Les 3 Vallées resort: 2 primary school classes and 2 secondary school classes. Further information to come...

! Since the 50s, millions of French people have discovered skiing thanks to ZJOVVSZRPPUN[YPWZ Accessible to everyone and highly popular, school skiing trips enabled children from all over to learn how to ski. They revealed the beauty HUKTHNPJVM[OLTV\U[HPUZand winter sports to young children, creating life-long memories and making youngsters want to come back again with their parents… That’s how the French mountains’ clientele renewed itself. ! Unfortunately school ski trips are K`PUNV\[ and without them, the number of new skiers is in decline because [OLJOPSKYLUVM[VKH`HYL[OLZRPLYZVM[VTVYYV^ The significant drop in school ski trips is due in part to the difficulties (administrative and financial) schools encounter in organising them… they’ve become discouraged, and it’s children who are paying the price.! To combat this decline, Les 3 Vallées, a ski area that has [YHPULK[OLlargest number of skiers and which offers [OLTVZ[Z\P[HISLMHJPSP[PLZ for beginners, has decided, once again, to tackle the problem head on and BE PROACTIVE!

Les 3 Vallées remains the world’s largest ski area

! Every ski area uses KPMMLYLU[JHSJ\SH[PVUTL[OVKZto quantify the number and length of its runs, depending on the country and the legislation in force. It is possible to THRLH\UPMVYTJHSJ\SH[PVU by using the sRPHISLZ\YMHJLHYLH (the method already used by North American resorts, amongst others), which makes it easier to compare the sizes and price to quality ratio between different ski resorts. However, the results are undeniable: in whichever way you calculate it, 3LZ=HSStLZYLTHPUZI`MHY the world’s largest interconnected ski area!! It is important to clarify that LHJOJV\U[Y`KLÄULZH¸ZRPHYLH¹ according to their own rules. In Switzerland, Germany or Austria, for example, “off-piste” itineraries are included in the ski area calculation (shown on piste maps), which is not the case in France, as it is forbidden to do so. There are over 100 kilometres of off-piste itineraries in Les 3 Vallées… ! Les 3 Vallées has commissioned JVTWHYH[P]LTHWZMVY[OL^VYSK»ZSHYNLZ[ZRPHYLHZ from an independent, recognised and certified organisation: KALIBLUE (an independent French air and land map-making company that specialises in digitalising mountain areas throughout the world). The maps allow you to THRLHULHZ`]PZ\HSJVTWHYPZVUbetween the slope surface area, as well as the how the runs interconnect and their density in the ski area. They show how easy and exact it is to measure by surface area, using existing, easily verifiable official data.! Beyond the surface area and number of kilometres of runs, T\S[PWSLSPURZHUKP[PULYHYPLZbetween resorts make up the richness of Les 3 Vallées. Each resort offers multiple possible itineraries, adapted to suit all abilities (from beginner to expert), catering to all interests (groomed runs, freeskiing, freestyle, racing, etc.), and to all lengths of time, from sprinting between resorts to multiple-day hikes to explore the vastness of Les 3 Vallées.

Les 3 Vallées (Savoie) comprises 8 ski resorts (village and international resorts): Courchevel, La Tania, Méribel, Brides-les-Bains, Les Menuires, Saint Martin de Belleville, Val Thorens and Orelle.

With 600 kilometres of runs, Les 3 Vallées forms [OL^VYSK»ZSHYNLZ[PU[LYJVUULJ[LKZRPHYLH! 105 km2 totalling 1,500 hectares of groomed slopes, spread between altitudes of 1,300 to 3,230 metres, 85% of which is

situated above 2,000 metres, 321 runs, 25 summits, 6 glaciers… and so many exceptional panoramic views… Statistics to NL[ZRPLYZMYVTHYV\UK[OL^VYSKKYLHTPUNabout Les 3 Vallées!

To give you an idea of what Les 3 Vallées represents in terms of area, here are a few vital statistics: 45,000 hectares of nature totalling [PTLZ[OLZ\YMHJLHYLHVM7HYPZ and 62,000 metres of vertical drop,

LES MENUIRES / SAINT MARTIN DE BELLEVILLE

!1\Z[VULJOVPJLH[3L-HYsVU!SL[[OLJOLMN\PKL`V\¹For 2 years, Le Farçon, La Tania’s Michelin-starred restaurant, has offered a one-off midday and evening menu. It’s a culinary concept that means produce is used when it’s most fresh, making for high quality dishes in terms of value for money and Chef Julien Machet’s creative expression. This winter, the chef is pushing the idea of the one-off menu even further by making each dish, from the appetisers to the dessert, individually for each man, woman, and child. The guiding thread of this “more than unique” menu is to adapt to everyone’s individuality and tastes. The chef has even more ideas to keep the menu changing… one to watch!

BRIDES-LES-BAINS

!0»T[YLH[PUNT`ZLSM[VZVTLTL[PTL¯As its name suggests, “Singles Week” is aimed at unattached holidaymakers. From the 31st of January to the 7th of February 2015, the resort of Brides-les-Bains dedicates an entire week to singles, just before Valentine’s Day. It’s a dream opportunity to find your other half and not be alone on the 14th of February. On the programme of festivities: discounted room rates, “Singles” tables in the resort’s restaurants, an “Ice-breaker” party for getting to know each other and “Gondola game” days in which small groups will set off from the Olympe departure station to explore Les 3 Vallées’ fabulous slopes together. Attention all single Skiing and Spa fans!

! A unique area for total relaxationLLes Bruyères’ new aqua-fun centre will comprise an aqua-fun swimming pool (underwater benches, counter current swimming, massage jets around the pool, etc.) with a special children’s area (large paddling pool and water games). A Wellness area will be reserved for adults so they can really unwind (balneotherapy whirlpool baths in water heated to 38°C, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna). A final “peak of well-being” area enables clients to really spoil themselves (affusion shower massage tables, treatment booths).

! The queen of the slopesLa Masse, Les Menuires’ sunniest ski run, has “turned blue” and is now accessible to everyone. The same Masse is where you’ll find a race to leave the first tracks of the day on Wednesdays, an opportunity for skiers to hurtle down the runs against the backdrop of the rising sun. The smartest skiers will go for the Liberty Ride option, a new 100% nature concept that lets you descend ungroomed slopes in complete safety, thanks to different “Nature Zones” established on the ski area. Finally, there’s the Walibi Gliss area, a new fun zone in the resort aimed at 8-15 year olds and their parents, which takes its inspiration from the world of Walibi Theme Park characters.

LA TANIA – COURCHEVEL LE PRAZ

!;OLJHSSVM[OLMVYLZ[Two new 6-seater detachable chair lifts, including one “bubble” lift, have replaced the old La Forêt, L’Aiguille du Fruit and La Gravelle chair lifts. The first of them, La Forêt, will enable “doorstep skiing” all the way to the Le Praz and La Tania sectors to make the most from the exceptional forest skiing for all abilities on offer.
