A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
What Is a Healthy Lifestyle?
Our lifestyles today are very busy. We have family, school, sports, leisure and social
commitments to fi t into a limited time. We need to be healthy to cope with the demands of daily
life. But what does it mean to have a healthy lifestyle?
To have a healthy lifestyle, we need to:
• eat a variety of healthy food most of the time
• get regular exercise
• have time to relax
• get adequate sleep to give our bodies time to recover and grow
It is important to balance these aspects of life, rather than putting more emphasis on one than
another.
1. Read the descriptions below of a normal day in the lives of two students.
Abbey gets up at 7:00 am, feeds the dog, and has cereal and a glass of juice for breakfast. She
walks to school with her friend, Julia. She has a package of chips for a morning snack, drinks
water from the water fountain, and has a chicken and lettuce sandwich with a banana for lunch.
She likes to play soccer with her friends at lunch and morning break time. She walks home with
Julia, has some crackers with cheese and fruit juice for afternoon snack and plays with the dog
for a while. She plays computer games for an hour or two before dinner, then has a shower and
does her homework. She watches her favorite television show for an hour, then usually goes to
bed at about 9:30 pm.
Carl gets up at 8:30 am and has two slices of toast with jam with a glass of milk for breakfast.
His mother drives him to school on her way to work. He eats cookies and a packaged fruit drink
for morning snack and a pot pie ordered from the school cafeteria with a fruit drink for lunch. He
likes to play card games with his friends at lunchtime and climb the fixed equipment at morning
break time. He catches the bus home, has a cereal bar and a can of soda for afternoon snack,
then watches some television. He has a shower before dinner, then plays the computer for an
hour or two. He goes to bed at about 10:30 pm.
2. Use the key below to rate the different aspects of the two lifestyles, then suggest
possible improvements:

The British have a reputation for being mad about sports. In fact they like watching
sports more than playing them. The British are spectators and the most popular spectator sports
are cricket and football.
Football is the most popular game. Football, or soccer, is an example of a professional
game. The game of football was first played in Britain, and later people began to play football in
other countries. There are many amateur soccer players in Britain who play the game on
Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Amateur clubs often play against professionals.
Almost every school has its football team and every boy in Britain
knows a lot about the game. He can tell you the names of the players in
the most important teams, he has pictures of them and knows the results
of many matches.
Rugby is another popular British sport which is played in other
countries. It is also called rugby football. The story is told that in 1823
boys at Rugby school in England were playing football in the normal way,
when suddenly one boy picked the ball up and ran with it. That was how a
new game was born. There are two forms of rugby football: the amateur game and the
professional game. The two games have different rules.
Football is the favourite winter game in Britain and cricket is the favourite summer sport.
Amateur cricket has the same rules as the professional game. A typical amateur cricket match

Facebook deserted by millions of users in biggest markets
1. Facebook has lost millions of users every month in its biggest markets. In the last six months,
Facebook has lost nearly 9 million monthly visitors in the US and 2 million in the UK.
2. It has stopped growing in the US, UK and other major European countries. In the last month,
the world’s largest social network lost 6 million US visitors, a 4% fall. In the UK, 1.4 million fewer
users went on Facebook last month, a fall of 4.5%.
3. People are also using Facebook less in Canada, Spain, France, Germany and Japan.
4. “The problem is that, in the US and UK, most people who want to join Facebook have already
done it,” said new media specialist Ian Maude at Enders Analysis. People get bored, he says,
and they “like to try something new”.
5. Other social networks are also very popular with younger people. Instagram, the photo-
sharing site, got 30 million new users in the 18 months before Facebook bought the business.
6. Path, the mobile phone-based social network started by ex-Facebook employee Dave Morin,
is gaining 1 million users a week. It now has more than 9 million users. 500,000 Venezuelans
downloaded the app in just one weekend.
7. Facebook is still growing fast in South America. The number of users in Brazil increased by
6% in the last month to 70 million, according to Socialbakers, whose information is used by
Facebook advertisers. And there has been a 4% rise in India to 64 million users – still only a
small part of the country’s population, so there is the possibility for more growth.
8. Global numbers of visitors to Facebook reached 1.05 billion a month in January, but they fell
by 20 million in February. Numbers rose again in April. The social network hasnow lost nearly 2
million visitors in the UK since December, with its 27 million total the same as a year ago.
9. The number of minutes Americans spend on Facebook is falling, too. The total was 121
billion minutes in December 2012, but that fell to 115 billion minutes in February.
10. As Facebook has already said, we spend less time using Facebook on our personal
computers because we now prefer to use our smartphones and tablets.
11. Wall Street expects Facebook’s income this quarter to be $1.44 billion, an increase from
$1.06 billion a year ago.
12. The company said that it might be losing “younger users” because they now prefer to use
“other products and services similar to, or as an alternative to, Facebook”.
13 Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has created some new initiatives for smartphone users
in the last year. One initiative, Facebook Home, is software that you can download onto Android
phones to feed news and photos from friends – and advertising – directly to your home screen.
