Introduction

DorsetYouthPartnership(DYP)

The DYP is a partnership of organisations working with young people across Dorset from both the voluntary and statutory sectors. It exists to support and help maintain high quality young people’s services aimed predominantly at 12-25 year olds. The Partnership bring together youth organisations to develop partnership working and to share good practice.

This booklet provides information about training opportunities that DYP members have on offer. If you would like to be included in next year’s edition please fill in the form at the back.

Trainingopportunities • Wide range of conservation related training (e.g. hedge laying, pole lathes - green woodwork, wildlife gardening, environmental youth work, constructing rest boxes, tree identification, dry stone walling etc.) at various locations in the S.W. Locally we can organise training on a variety of conservation subjects, management topics (e.g. effective presentations, problem solving). Also NVQ 2 Environmental Conservation and certificates in using chainsaws and brushcutters.

• We run a variety of training-related programmes for young people: Milennium Volunteers Milennium Volunteers Plus Grass Routes (LSC Funded Training for 16-35 year olds) Young Routes (LSC funded training for 16-18 year old

offenders)Also we can fund training by other providers if young person is registered with one of these programmes.

Venues Various: Bristol, Poole, Dorchester, Yeovil, Salisbury, Exeter etc.

Timestrainingavailable Mostly weekdays; weekends and evening by negotiation.

Cost £25 to £100 a day, but free to BTCV volunteers if they are unwaged and enrol with the BTCV training institute. Also free to young people engaged in the BTCV programmes listed above.

Accreditation/Qualifications Many courses are certificated by the NCFE.

Othercomments Locally provided courses can be tailored to suit needs.

Venues A range of Connexions Service and wider Partnership premises, across all of Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole. We endeavour to locate courses at venues that are most convenient for the intended learners.Whole sub-region single events tend to be Dorchester/Wareham, multiple event programmes tend to employ local venues.

Timestrainingavailable The majority of events are within normal office hours half or whole days, but early evening/weekend events can be faciilitated according to specific needs.

Cost Majority are without charge. Cost recovery charges are only made for major accredited courses leading to professional/recognised qualifications.We reserve the right to recover expenses incurred for late withdrawal from events.

Venues Mostly in the village halls used by the youth clubs and groups from where the workers/volunteers attending sessions originate. However, where only small numbers are involved, the private dwelling of one of the trainees is now often used.

Timestrainingavailable In order to reach maximum numbers, mainly from rural youth clubs and groups, training will be arranged for any time on weekdays, evenings or at weekends. To provide extra flexibility, sessions will also be offered on public holidays. However, no set programme for training sessions is planned as demand is driven by the clubs and groups involved.

Cost Free to all voluntary organisations in membership of Dorset Youth Partnership.

Accreditation/Qualifications The above training opportunities do not carry any recognised accreditation/qualifications although a certificate of Attendance is issued to those who complete the training successfully.

Othercomments Subject to available capacity, Dorset Youth Association is prepared to consider applications from other organisations that would like to utilise any of the above training opportunities.

Trainingopportunities Brief Interventions (for Drug and Alcohol Users) - 5 day intensive drug awareness course (30 hours), National open college network accreditation level 3 cross referenced to drug and alcohol national occupational standards (DANOS). Identification of commonly used legal and illegal drugs. Signs symptoms effects of substances. Comparisons or hallucinogens, stimulants, opiates and depressants. Dependency. Impacts of use. Cycle of change. Motivation for change. Alcohol awareness. Assessment, care planning and Brief Interventions. Drugs and the law. Portfolio Building. Portfolio of evidence needs to be completed for assessment (4 weeks after taught part of course has ended)

Recognising Issues of Substance Misuse – Level One – National Open College Network accredited (10 hours) – Identifying signs and symptoms of commonly used drugs across Dorset, slang terminology, street cost etc, process of addiction and the pharmacology of drugs, alcohol awareness, drugs and the law. Short questionnaire to complete for assessment (done in class time).
