DORAVILLE CITY VOLUNTEER SERVICE “DCVS”

• DCVS will encompass a number of volunteer partnerships developed over the next several months

! Community Ambassadors Through City Sponsored Citizen Academy

WHAT IS ADOPT-A-SPOT Partnership between volunteers in the community and the city to perform clean up and beautification efforts in areas throughout the city.

Doraville is fortunate to already have residents and businesses who are committed to participate in helping to keep the city clean and further beautify our neighborhoods.

Currently performing tasks at their own expense, without city prior knowledge

• Allows for coordination & scheduling

• Provides city resources & support

• Encourages community pride

• Program designed to have guidelines, along with flexibility

EXAMPLES OF SPOTS FOR ADOPTION

• ALL SPOTS MUST BE PUBLICLY HELD PROPERTY " Street Adoptions For Litter Clean-ups (Monthly Or

Quarterly) " Places Within The Parks " Recreation Fields " Trails And Pathways " City Owned Vacant Lots " Graffiti Removal

• Waterways (Creek And Stream Banks (With State Department Of Natural Resources Limitations) • Median Islands • Residential Area Entrance Ways • City Corporate Limit Entrance Ways

OTHER PROGRAM ASPECTS

• City to provide some of the clean up supplies, plant materials & city workers from time-to-time as can be scheduled

• Currently city reimburses some volunteers for plant purchases – Adopt-A-Spot will allow the city ability to buy in bulk and tax exempt which will better use funds

•  The work by volunteers is intended to be in addition to the work of city workers and private contractors and not intended as a substitution.

•  Intergenerational opportunities &diversity celebrations (for example a small replica of a Japanese Garden developed on a vacant city lot)

• Volunteers will receive some training (safety, special sessions held periodically from horiculturists & other trainings)

• Volunteers will receive some training (safety, special sessions held periodically from horticulturists & other trainings)

• Under review is general liability insurance that could be offered to volunteers while on volunteer assignment – may be able to get volunteers a lower rate

• Volunteers will need to execute a liability waiver form

Volunteering can be hard work and is a commitment of time and energy; but volunteering can be fun, a way of making new friends and physically rewarding. The City as a whole benefits from partnering with volunteers, so Adopt -A-Spot is designed to make it easier and more supportive to volunteer.
