ears ago, God led me to serve as a camp counselor at Christian Hills Camp in Eureka, Kansas. That camp facility was an outdoor ministry site of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). I personally have been part of the United Church of Christ all my life; so this meant that at Christian Hills I was exposed to a bunch of camp songs which were new to me. One of those precious, new songs was “King Jesus Is All.” It is a lively, fun tune with echo parts. The chorus celebrates: “King Jesus is all; my all in all. And I know that he’ll answer—Me when I call. Walking by my side—I’m satisfied. King Jesus is all; my all in all!” How true! God’s most spectacular gift is the saving love of Christ. Many stories (and SCRIPTURES!) emphasize this beautiful truth. Our greatest blessing is God’s gift of Christ Jesus. My treasured companions in faith, as you and I discover ourselves poised on the threshold of the Lenten Season, this is a fitting moment to highlight God’s tremendous gift of salvation. One of you in our Ivy congregation shared the following with me. It applies to us all. The title is The Son . A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art. When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when he was hit by gunfire and he died. He often talked about you, and your love for art.' The young man held out a package, and said, 'I know this isn't much. I'm not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.' The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in awe at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture. 'Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me.

The title is The Son.

A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art.

When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was notified and grieved deeply for his only son.

About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the

door with a large package in his hands.

The young man said, 'Sir, you don't know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when he was hit by gunfire and he died. He often talked about you, and your love for art.' The young man held out a package, and said, 'I know this isn't much. I'm not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.'

The father opened the package. It's a gift.'

The father hung the portrait over his mantle. Every time visitors came to his home, he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.

Eventually, the wealthy man died. There was to be an elaborate auction of his paintings. Many influential people gathered, excited about seeing great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collection.

On the auction platform sat the painting of the son.

The auctioneer pounded his gavel. 'We will start the

(Continued on page 2)

bidding with this picture of the son. Who will bid for this painting?'

There was silence...

Then a voice in the back shouted, 'We want to see the famous paintings. Skip this one.'

But the auctioneer persisted, 'Will somebody bid for this painting? Who will start the bidding? $200? $100?'

Another voice angrily piped up, 'We didn't come to see this painting. We came to see the Van Gogh’s, the Rembrandt’s. Get on with the real bids!'

But still, the auctioneer continued, 'The son, the son; who'll take the son?'

Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room. It was the longtime gardener of the man and his son. 'I'll give $10 for the painting.' It was all that the gardener could afford.

'We have $10. Who will bid twenty?'

'Give it to him for ten! Let's see the masters.' The crowd was becoming angry. They didn't want the painting of the son. They wanted to buy worthy investments for their collections.

The auctioneer declared, 'Ten dollars then. Going once; going twice.’ He pounded his gavel, ‘Sold for $10.'

Someone sitting in the second row shouted, 'Now, let's get on with the collection!'

The auctioneer laid down his gavel. 'I'm sorry. The auction is over.'

'What?! What about the masterpieces?'

'I am sorry,’ apologized the auctioneer. ‘When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will. I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time. Only the painting of the son was to be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting inherits the entire estate, including all of the masterpieces. The one who took the son receives everything!'

Over 2,000 years ago, God gave God’s Son to die on the Cross.

To this day, like that auctioneer, God is asking: 'The Son, the Son; who'll take the Son?'

Whoever takes the Son receives everything.

“For God so loved the world, that God gave God’s only Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through the Son.” John 3:16-17

Receive the Son of God…receive everything.

Christ Jesus is all in all, Pastor Dan

“King Jesus Is All” Lyrics by Charlie Hall [Chorus] King Jesus is all, my all in all. And I know that he’ll answer Me when I call. Walking by my side, I’m satisfied King Jesus is all, My all in all! [Verse] Well, I went out to meet the Lord (oh, yeah) I got down on my knees (uh huh) I said my very first prayer (amen) You know the Holy Ghost met me there (well, well, well) I stepped on the rock (clap) The rock was sound. (ugh) Oh, the love of God came a-tumbling down The reason I know That God saved my soul Was I dug down deep and I found pure gold. [Chorus]

…The family of Evelyn Del Carmen wish to thank the congregation for your prayers and words of sympathy during our period of grief and sorrow. We will forever cherish your loving memory of Evelyn. Thank you again.

LASER TAG FOR SR. HIGH & MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH–

FEBRUARY 5

Following worship on February 5, the Middle & Senior High youth

(grades 6 – 12) of Ivy Chapel will be going Laser Tagging! This is one

of our favorite activities so plan to be there! We’ll leave following

Fellowship time, stop for some lunch and then spend the afternoon

together. We’ll be home before any Super Bowl parties – don’t worry!

Watch your e-mail for more info. The Wilking family is coordinating

this activity.

ALL YOUTH (AND PARENTS) GAME NIGHT IN FEBRUARY

Get Your Game On… It’s time to see who really is the champion of Sorry, Blokus,

Rummikub and maybe even Poker. Bring your favorite board game and an appetizer or dessert and come to the Heend’s house on

Saturday, February 11 at 6:30 pm to find out who has the stuff to win. Parents, plan to stay and join in the fun.

Feb. 24 & 25 Alpha-Omega/Ark

World Vision Famine Lock-in

We will be collecting donations during the month of

February to help the hungry. Service project at

Lydia's House on Saturday, Feb. 25.

On Sunday, February 5, following worship our youth will be standing near the doors at the rear of the sanctuary holding soup pots for your donations to this nationwide effort to help the hungry. Cash donations as well as donations of non perishable food items are welcome. The youth of Ivy Chapel will use these donations during our World Vision Famine lock-in to purchase needed items for Joint Neighborhood Ministries and Circle of Concern.

Hunger facts:

*The number of Americans living in poverty is the highest it has been in 52 years.

*When the economy goes down, the number of people seeking help from the nation's food banks goes up.

*Donations to food banks slow down after the holidays even though the need never goes away.

*Over 48 million Americans, including 16 million children, live on the edge of hunger. Research shows hungry children have lower grades in school because they cannot concentrate.

*Since Souper Bowl of Caring began, more than $81 million has been collected in cash and food from participants like you in all 50 states.

Thank you for tackling hunger with us in 2012.

Together we make a difference!

Several of our youth are attending CONFERENCE YOUTH EVENT 2012

TEACHER APPRECIATION SUNDAY – February 12

February 5, 2012

The Ivy Vine, February 2012 5 Ivy Chapel UCC • 620 N Woods Mill Rd Chesterfield • 314-434-4991

It is hard to believe that a year ago at this time I was first interviewing for the Minister of Music position at Ivy Chapel UCC. Yes, folks, it has been "almost" a year since I interviewed with the search committee. At that time, I was a new mom, a new Missourian…basically a new person. My whole life had been turned upside down. Honestly, Ivy Chapel could not have come into my life at a better time. The warmth and giving nature of all the members of Ivy Chapel have been a God-send to myself and my family. We love that we are here, and it simply proves to me that God ALWAYS has a plan. Two years ago at this time, I never would have thought that this is the road my life would have taken, but I am so glad to be here. And, I can't wait to see what this next year has in store for me, my family and Ivy Chapel UCC.

It is crazy to me that we are marching our way towards the Lenten season especially with the mild winter we have been having. Typically, Lenten music is a little slower, a little sadder and a little down I guess. Something Pastor Dan mentioned a couple weeks ago really strikes me at this time of year. He said, "Every day is a little bit of Easter." So, let's remember this statement as we march ourselves into the Lenten season.

Finally, as always, a call to members to join the choir. We could really use some new faces in the choir loft. Have you always been interested in choir, but are too busy, not good enough or just plain scared?? I am willing to work around hectic schedules and work individually with new members to gain confidence. The choir is full of supportive members who would love to have you, and that is the truth. We want you! :)

Until next time… Anna

According to Dr. Dale Robbins of Victorious Network, “not only does the Bible say that “fellowship” is the evidence of walking in the light (1 John 1:7), but it also says that “loving the brethren” is evidence of that walk. “He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him” (1 John 2:10). This shows that there is a strong, inseparable relationship between “fellowship” and “loving the brethren.” Consequently, it appears that fellowship is intended to be the practice of loving the brethren, which helps keep us in a right relationship with Christ.” Get involved and stay in faithful fellowship with Christ!

SAVE THE DATE FOR THE CHILI SUPPER This bi-annual event is Saturday, the 18th of February from 4:00-7:30pm. More details to follow. If you would like to help, please contact: Debbie Glenn at 314-576-3991, or Nancy Gerdes at 314-542-0263.

We encourage all of you to mark your calendars and join in the fun. Get to know others in our congregation better and win the 2012 Elmer Award for best attendance at Fellowship

events!!! Maybe you will even win an attendance prize at an event!

The Mary and Martha Women's Group celebrated their First Birthday on January 17th, 2012 by having refreshments and a bright yellow tablecloth and flowers to light up a dull January day, furnished by Ann Molyneaux. We agreed that we had a great first year and started our planning for 2012. We also brought notes to write to the formerly abused women of Lydia's House who need a lot of encouragement to become independent.

We decided to collect some of Lydia's House continuously most needed items starting on January 29th. The items are Toilet Paper, Diapers and Pull-Ups®, and 32 Gal. Storage Containers. We will collect these items for 2 weeks. We hope many Ivy Members can contribute. There will be Announcements and KYP reminders.

In February we decided to try the challenge of baking a couple of pies each to contribute to the desserts for the Chili Supper on February 18th. We would love any pie bakers to join us with one or two pies.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday February 21, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the Ivy Multipurpose Room. That will be Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. Everyone is invited to wear Mardi Gras Beads to the Meeting! We will have a Lenten Program led by Lee Headrick.

Some other suggestions for this year include a Women's Salad Luncheon and a Birthday Party to collect supplies for Children's Birthdays which is on Lydia's House and ECH list of needs.

MOUNT TABOR

About seven miles east of Nazareth, Solitary, rounded mountain rising from the plain of Esdraelon. Fortified. Here Barak gathered his forces against Sisera (Judges 4:12-14)

A Bible Dictionary, ©MCMLXI, The C. R. Gibson Co., Norwalk, CN

Early Church fathers believed that the Transfiguration took place on Mt. Tabor, including Cyril of Jerusalem (in 348),

Epiphanius, and Jerome. Eusebius was uncertain if it took place on Mt. Tabor or on Mt. Hermon. One reason for this

identification was a misunderstanding of Matthew 17:1. This verse was taken to mean that Jesus took the disciples

up a mountain "by itself," rather than that he took the disciples up a mountain "by themselves."

TRANSFIGURED~MARK 9:2-9

2After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6(He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) 7Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” 8Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. 9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
