Schaumburg, Ill., in conjunctionwith Glass Expo Midwest™, saidthey “would definitely attendagain.” The day-long event packedin informative sessions on a varietyof topics.
“The diverse topics were are allrelevant, especially theDepartment of Energy’s (DOE)Marc LaFrance and the speakerswho addressed the lead paint legis-lation which goes into effect April22nd,” said David Stewart, directorof business development and gov-ernment relations for EuramaxInternational Inc.
One attendee noted in his evalu-ation form, “In terms of content, itwas the best set of seminars I’veseen in our industry.”
How to be Green One such session was the pres-
entation “Specific Steps to TakeToward Being Green.” Panelistsincluded Eric Gerstenbacher andKen Keil from Northeast Building
Products in Philadelphia, Pa.Gerstenbacher admitted that
when his company began some ofits efforts such as recycling the com-pany had another type of “green” inmind—the monetary kind. Thecompany recycled to save money ontrash pickup and other costs.
The company also undertookother simple measures such asreducing the lighting in its plant atnight resulting in a savings ofenough kWh to run a typical house-hold for one year.
As the company’s efforts evolvedit made a commitment to reducethe amount of waste it sends to thelandfill.
“Do your dumpster dives,” saidKeil. “Look at what you’re throwingaway.”
Gerstenbacher urged compa-nies to not give up when lookingfor others who may have a need foryour scrap. For example, the com-pany searched for two years forsomeone to take its foam left overfrom the foam-filling process andnow they finally have two peopleinterested.
“Don’t give up,” said Keil.
“It just means talking to the rightfolks and persistence,” saidGerstenbacher.
Back Up Green ClaimsLater in the day, Steven Baker
from the Federal Trade Commissionaddressed attendees concerningwhat they can and cannot say whenmaking green claims.
“When people overstate claimsis where they get into problems,”said Baker, who urged employeesto simply “tell the truth and havesubstantiation.”
The Federal Trade Commissionpublishes the Guides for the Use ofEnvironmental Marketing Claims(also known as the Green Guides).Information offered in the guidesincludes advice for making com-parative claims and not overstatingproduct attributes. One example ofthe latter is use of the wordbiodegradable.
‘That’s one of our favorites,” jokedBaker, who also cautioned attendeesabout using the word “recyclable.”
“Don’t say this unless a facilityexists to recycle the material,” hesaid.

DOE Update Also in the energy arena, the
Department of Energy’s (DOE) MarcLaFrance provided attendees withan update on various DOE activitiesincluding the much talked about R5windows volume purchase pro-gram. LaFrance stressed that thisprogram is looking at the creation ofa “cost effective” R5 product.
“There is an R11 window that iscertified by the NationalFenestration Rating Council, but weknow that window is not cost-effec-tive to produce,” said LaFrance.
“We’re interested in getting asmany buyers as possible to gaininterest in triple-pane windows,”he added.
Regarding phase two of ENERGY
STAR®, LaFrance reported that theDOE will begin this analysis in thenext three to fifteen months.Another focus of the DOE’s attention
also will focus on product durability.“We don’t have a qualified test
procedure for the long-term dura-bility of the whole window unit. Wewill place a renewed effort on thatin the next fiscal year,” he says.
Evaluating the Road to Recovery
DWM columnist Michael Collinsof Jordan Knauff and Companyreminded attendees that the indus-try is in for a slow recovery in 2010.He also pointed out that the effectsof the stimulus package will be feltinto 2012.
“Even if some stimulus moneyisn’t earmarked for construction, itis for things that will facilitate con-struction and that is good news forindustry,” he said.
Collins also offered some addi-tional advice for manufacturers sothey may position themselves well
during this period of recovery. “Think about increasing your
sales force,” said Collins. “There is alot of talent out there. Develop anongoing recruiting program.”
He also told attendees to remem-ber a profitable but often forgottensegment of the industry.
“Don’t forget about multi-familyhousing,” he said. “These are verybig jobs that can be profitable.”
He suggested attendees take thetime to gather data such as ship-ping radius. “Are your most distantcustomers still profitable to serve?”asked Collins.

“It’s not just congressional representatives and sen-ators that the industry has to speak to,” said Huber.

on March 16 in Schaumburg, Ill.,in conjunction with Glass ExpoMidwest™, said they“would definitelyattend again.” The day-long event packed ininformative sessionson a variety of topics.
“The diverse topicswere are all relevant,especially theDepartment of Energy’s(DOE) Marc LaFrance and thespeakers who addressed the leadpaint legislation which goes intoeffect April 22nd,” said DavidStewart, director of business devel-opment and government relationsfor Euramax International Inc.
One attendee noted in his evalu-ation form, “In terms of content, itwas the best set of seminars I’veseen in our industry.”
Specific Steps Toward Being Green
One such session was the pres-entation “Specific Steps to TakeToward Being Green.” Panelists
included Eric Gerstenbacher andKen Keil from Northeast BuildingProducts in Philadelphia, Pa.
Gerstenbacher admitted thatwhen his company began some ofits efforts such as recycling thecompany had another type of“green” in mind—the monetarykind. The company recycled to savemoney on trash pickup and othercosts.
The company also undertookother simple measures such asreducing the lighting in its plant atnight resulting in a savings ofenough kWh to run a typical house-
hold for one year.As the company’s
efforts evolved it made acommitment to reducethe amount of waste itsends to the landfill.
“Do your dumpsterdives,” said Keil. “Look atwhat you’re throwingaway.”
Gerstenbacher urged companiesto not give up when looking for oth-ers who may have a need for yourscrap. For example, the companysearched for two years for someoneto take its foam left over from thefoam-filling process and now theyfinally have two people interested.
“Don’t give up,” said Keil. “It just means talking to the right

Back Up Green ClaimsLater in the day, Steven Baker
from the Federal TradeCommission addressed attendeesconcerning what they can and can-not say when making green claims.
“When people overstate claimsis where they get into problems,”
said Baker, who urged employeesto simply “tell the truth and havesubstantiation.”
The Federal Trade Commissionpublishes the Guides for the Use ofEnvironmental Marketing Claims(also known as the Green Guides).Information offered in the guidesincludes advice for making com-parative claims and not overstatingproduct attributes. One example ofthe latter is use of the wordbiodegradable.
‘That’s one of our favorites,”joked Baker, who also cautionedattendees about using the word“recyclable.”
“Don’t say this unless a facility
exists to recycle the material,” hesaid.
Another common claim is sourcereduction.
“If you really have an attributethat is different say what it is,” headded.

Department of Energy’s (DOE) MarcLaFrance provided attendees withan update on various DOE activitiesincluding the much talked about R5windows volume purchase program.LaFrance stressed that this programis looking at the creation of a “costeffective” R5 product.

“There is an R11 window that iscertified by the NationalFenestration Rating Council, butwe know that window is not cost-effective to produce,” saidLaFrance.
“We’re interested in getting asmany buyers as possible to gaininterest in triple-pane windows,”he added.
Regarding phase two of EnergyStar, LaFrance reported that theDOE will begin this analysis in thenext three to fifteen months.Another focus of the DOE’s atten-tion also will focus on productdurability.
“We don’t have a qualified testprocedure for the long-term dura-bility of the whole window unit. Wewill place a renewed effort on thatin the next fiscal year,” he says.

of Jordan Knuaff and Companyreminded attendees that the indus-try is in for a slow recovery in 2010.He also pointed out that the effectsof the stimulus package will be feltinto 2012.
“Even if some stimulus moneyisn’t earmarked for construction, itis for things that will facilitate con-struction and that is good news forindustry,” he said.
Collins also offered some addi-tional advice for manufacturers sothey may position themselves wellduring this period of recovery.
“Think about increasing yoursales force,” said Collins. “There is alot of talent out there. Develop an
ongoing recruiting program.”He also told attendees to remem-
ber a profitable but often forgottensegment of the industry.
“Don’t forget about multi-familyhousing,” he said. “These are verybig jobs that can be profitable.”
He suggested attendees take thetime to gather data such as ship-ping radius. “Are your most distantcustomers still profitable to serve?”asked Collins.
Lobbying Your LegislatorsWhile the fenestration industry
definitely still has challenges toface there are also opportunitiesavailable and one of these is gettingin front of legislators to get thevoice of the industry heard. Neverhas this been more important thanit is now.
DWM editor and publisher TaraTaffera offered examples of variousdoor and window companies thathave invited congressional repre-sentatives to their facilities in thepast year, and how companies aremaking their voices heard.
She also offered practical advicefrom the National Association of
Manufacturers for everything fromhow to set up a meeting, to how toconduct the meeting to follow up.Darryl Huber, president of theNortheast Window and DoorAssociation, also provided specificexamples of what that associationhas done to get the voices of theindustry in front of elected officials.He offered some lessons learnedfrom “bad meetings” and how tolearn from that for future visits
“It’s not just congressional repre-sentatives and senators that theindustry has to speak to,” saidHuber.
“The EPA is the new player intown and we need to develop rela-tionships with them,” he added.
He also stressed that it’s nevertoo early to talk about a particularissue.
“I know there are some memberswho are already talking to their rep-resentatives about the 2011 energytax credit,” he said.

If you’re a dealer who is taking a“wait-and-see” attitude regardingthe EPA’s upcoming lead paint reg-
ulations, “you’re playing Russianroulette,” said Tyson Schwartz, vicepresident of sales andmarketing for GorellWindows and Doors.Schwartz addressed thismessage to attendees ofFenestration Day held onMarch 16 in Schaumburg,Ill., and told manufactur-ers and dealers what theyneed to do to prepare forupcoming changes.
“Ignorance is not adefense,” said Schwartz.“It can put you out of business.”
He also stressed thatattendees need to worktogether to get their voic-es heard regarding thisimportant issue. Manygroups are working together to get theApril 22 implementation date delayedand to get the opt-out provision toremain.
“The industry is working togethermore than ever and I’m proud of that,”says Schwartz.
Jim Lett of A.B.E. Windows andDoors in Allentown, Pa., talked specifi-cally about how these regulations willaffect dealers. As an owner of a 22-employee firm, Lett has had 19 ofthose employees certified and stressedthat not only the installers need to gothrough the EPA-certified training.
“We’ve had salespeople certified aswell,” said Lett. “That way when theytalk to the homeowner they areknowledgeable about the regulations.”
He also said that it is difficult for anemployee to remember eight hoursworth of material.
“I have good-quality employees,but you just can’t remember it all,”said Lett, who added that this isanother reason to have several
employees trained.Lett also reminded attendees of the
fine–$37,500 per violation per day–fornon-compliance. But Lett said he“doesn’t have time or desire to monitor
the competition.”He added, however, that EPA can do
this easily by going through SIC codesto see what companies have gonethrough the training and he hopesthey take this approach.
While EPA estimates that the costof these regulations will add $35 tothe cost of a window replacementjob, Lett stressed that the costs aremuch higher and he gave attendeessome examples of costs he hasincurred thus far:• Pollution insurance–$3,200. Lett
told manufacturers to advise theirdealers to purchase this insurance;
• Register your company with EPA–$300. Lett reminded attendees thatsometimes people forget that theymust not only go through the train-ing but also get their company cer-tified;
• Certified renovator class–$250-$300 per person; and
• HEPA vacuum–$350-$700.Lett estimated that an extra $120-
200 will be incurred for each small joband $60-$90 per window for largerjobs.
Other challenges have nothing todo with cost.
Lett warned dealers inattendance that the jobswill definitely take longerto complete.
“We’re very inefficientthe first time around,” hesaid. “If you’re workingon a job that has an openroom, you have to buildzip walls. We worked on aroom recently withcathedral ceilings. Wheredo you put the zip walls?
And what do you do ifyou are working on awindy or rainy day? Thereis just one issue after theother that no one hasthought through,” saidLett.
According to the EPA’s Lead-BasedPaint Renovation Repair and PaintingProgram, before a contractor beginswork on a pre-1978 home, the homemust be tested for the presence oflead. However, Lett has made thedecision that he won’t even test.
“If I’m working on a pre-1978home, I’m going to follow these leadsafe work practices,” he said.
Others in attendance said they planto do so as well and a few attendeesreported that EPA trainers even offeredthis same advice.
Of course neither Schwartz nor Lettwants the homeowner to be at risk forlead exposure. However, both are infavor of having the opt-out provisionremain in place so homeowners canmake an informed decision.
“I’ve reduced my workforce by 33percent since 2008,” said Lett. “Weneed to be building it back up nottearing it down, due to the effectthese [regulations] will have on busi-nesses such as mine.”
