Coordinator’s Corner

Well, we are officially seven weeks into the New Year – holy crap that happened fast! As I write this it made me take notice of where I am at so far this year on moving towards achieving the goals I have set for myself to accomplish in 2016.

My business coach tells me that I tend to overcomplicate and overthink everything I want to accomplish.

I found these five simple questions put me back on track:

• What is the one thing I should focus on in the upcoming year to improve my chances for breakthrough success?

• How must my business change in the upcoming year to create my desired lifestyle?

• What education or development am I lacking that I should invest in myself?

• Does my support system meet my personal and business needs? If not, how can I improve it?

• What one thing did I learn in 2015 that will drive greater success in 2016?

I know right!! Hope you found this to be as thought provoking as I did. Would love to share my answers with you over a cup of coffee – give me a shout! Coffee is on me!

Each New Years for the last several years my daughter Leah has asked each of our family to choose a word to represent them for the year. My word for 2016 is Fearless. Now when my younger daughter, Jessica heard this she said, “Mom are you going to go bungee jumping?” I laughed because her version of fearless and mine are very dierent. I am not interested in doing the physical version of fearless – yup I’m a chicken. Instead I want to apply being fearless to my work, my business and my life in a dierent way.Susan Jeers, in her book Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, describes FEAR as False Expectations Appearing Real. I often think about that when I sense I’m afraid or fearful of doing something or starting something new. More times than not my fear stems from fear of the unknown – and in my case a lack of control (and yup control is a value of mine!) I also believe my fear comes from perfectionism. Wanting everything to be just right often stops me from even trying. And then there are those saboteurs, those voices we have in our head. Some of mine include: “You aren’t good enough.” “You can’t write.” “You aren’t as smart as others.” What to do with those fears and saboteurs? The rst step is awareness. Listening to those inner voices. Acknowledging if there is any truth in them. And letting go of in my case having to do it just right. Are you struggling with fears that may or may not be true? Coaching can help you achieve those goals and acknowledge those fears in a safe setting.Fearless, that’s my word for 2016. Article written by: Mary KrugerWhat will your word be? If you've been having trouble juggling all your responsibilities and tting in

your parent's appointments too, there is an option...

Still have any ‘limiting beliefs’ about the benefits of in-person networking? Maybe you just haven’t found the right group, or you need to know more about how you make the most of the networking you are doing. There are many networking groups for you to choose from so decide ‘why’ you want to connect with a particular group. Some groups may appeal to you because there is a high likelihood you will find your ideal client, some you may want to attend just because you like the energy of the group or the topics they discuss. It doesn’t matter what the reason and you can make the most out of any networking group you when you feel it is the right fit for you! The Law of Attraction would encourage you to find like-minded people whom you are attracted to and who are attracted to you. People need to get to know you, like you and trust you before they either buy from you or refer you. Networking is really about making connections and growing the relationship.5 Ways to Make the Most of Networking at the Valley Women’s Network …1) Set Your Intention – even before you decide

on which group will work for you decide ‘why’ you want to attend that group. Do you want to meet other like-minded women entrepreneurs like yourself or do you want to

meet some new friends? You decide and maybe it’s a mix of both. Then when you do attend, set your intention again so that you are focused on what you want your outcome to be. Many times just meeting someone to have a referral coffee/tea with after the meeting is the best reason to attend!

2) Find Your Ideal Client Group – think about who you are targeting and where you are most likely to attract your ideal client. There are times when it makes sense to travel quite a distance to a networking event if having a client live in your area is not important. For example if you are someone who does work by phone then it won’t matter where you meet your client. If you provide in-home services then where your client lives is more important from a time management perspective.

3) Engage Your Fellow Networker – ever notice someone’s eyes glazing over when you are talking to them. I have and I have to own that because I must be boring them! So get yourself in a high energy zone and be passionate about what you say to people. Listen to them and make your interaction ‘about them‘ instead of thinking of what you are going to say next or who you feel you need to talk to next.

4) Be Present – the minute you enter the event just leave everything else at the door except who you want to be in that moment for that time period. Leave all the other roles that you play daily behind. Show up as you want others to discover you. Forget about how busy you are, all the things you have to get done when you leave…just for a few hours give yourself this time to relax and connect. Why not have fun while you are learning about what other entrepreneurs do?

5) Follow Up – the majority of networkers admit that this is the area that they fall down in. It is a critical step if you want to move forward with people you have met. Don’t bother sending a ‘canned email’. You can tell when someone has sent out an email to every single person they met. It doesn’t feel personal. Be personal. Make connections. check them out on their social media sites like Facebook or LinkedIn. Get engaged in the conversations. Get together in person for a ‘referral meeting’ to see who you can refer to them, and let them know who they can refer to you!

And if you are a member of Valley Women Network then be sure to get engaged on their private Facebook page!

Our smartphones allow us to have the world at our ngertips. We can talk, text, write emails, play games, watch movies and browse the web — all with a few taps and swipes.Every day, you go about your business, phone always in hand - until you get the text message that changes everything: your data usage is high. Then you begin to fear overcharges. There was once a time when phone plans featured a select number of minutes and texts with unlimited data. But carriers know it's the data we're after, and so they create metered plans for our iPhones and Androids.Fear those charges no more, because we have complied a list of the best ways to preserve data on the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus as well as Android phones.

What Uses Data On Your Phone?Just about everything we do on our phones requires data. Just one photo post on social media will take up 350KB, whereas one hour of surng the web will suck up 15MB. One minute of video streaming uses about 4MB — 15MB if you are watching in HD, and 4MB is needed for one app or game to download.

Find The Amount Of Data You NeedWhether you're Team iPhone or Team Android, the rst thing you should know is how much data you really need each month. Look at your bill to see the amount you're using, so you can tell if you're at risk for going over the allotted amount each month. Those with AT&T service can estimate their monthly data usage with the Data Calculator oered on the website. Apple users can check their data by going to Settings > Cellular. You can see the amount used and turn o Cellular Data to restrict all data to Wi-Fi.

Android users can manage their data in Settings > Data Usage. You can edit the "set mobile data limit box," and make sure the limits match your plan. Also conrm that your monthly cycle matches with the start date of your plan.

Turn On Wi-FiWhen you can, use your phone's Wi-Fi - it won't count what you do on your phone toward your allotted amount of data. This data hack applies to both iPhones and Androids. You can turn on Wi-Fi from your phone's dropdown menus or in Settings.

Stop StreamingVideo streaming is one of the quickest and easiest ways to use up large amounts of data. And when we say video, we aren't just talking about YouTube. We mean Vine, Instagram and any other apps that feature videos. There is no hack here - even using a browser to watch a clip will still use data. All you can do is limit your time dedicated to watching videos until you have Wi-Fi.When you do use YouTube, watch videos in low resolution by clicking on the three dots and selecting 144p.Make sure that your Spotify playlist is set to "Available Oine" so you can play your favorite songs without streaming, and always sync your playlists only when you're connected to Wi-Fi.

Save Preloaded DataReferring to a map is sometimes a necessity, but you can still access your routes without using data. When you're in Google Maps, press and hold your destination to drop a pin. Once you tap on the three dots to that pin, you will have the option to save the map oine. Go to Menu > Make available maps oine, or access it through Maps > My Places > Oine. You can still read all those news stories on your commute home without using up your data by saving them rst. Download articles when connected to Wi-Fi and use the app Pocket for both iPhone and Android, which allows you to read articles without data.To use Pocket, simply copy and past the article link into the app. When you're ready to read it, go into Airplane Mode.

Find Guilty AppsEven when you're not using them, some apps are still eating away at your data without you even knowing it. iPhone users can go into Settings > Cellular and scroll down to view all the apps and amount of data used. You can manually toggle o the data for apps you aren't using.

Android users can nd their guilty apps in Settings > Wireless & Networks > Data Usage. Think about deleting nonessential apps that take away too much data. Make sure you adjust which apps you want to Auto-Sync because they can be real data killers. Apps like Google+ and Facebook are huge culprits.

iPhone-Specic Data HacksApple users often view the iCloud as a saving grace, but it uses up a lot of data on your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. Your best bet is to turn o iCloud when you're using your phone heavily and just turn it on when you want to sync your iOS devices.

Also, make sure the data is o for your apps by going to Settings > iTunes & App Store. There, you can manage your automatic downloads, which are features that can also drain your battery. When you're running low on data, avoid using FaceTime because it can eat away at data. When you're not using this feature, go to Settings > Cellular and scroll down to FaceTime to make sure it's toggled o, so it's not using data.

Android-Specic Data HacksBesides having the ability to manually limit your data usage, Android phones make it easy to restrict background data. Go to Settings > Data Usage > and scroll down to "restrict background data."In the battle of iPhones vs. Androids, both phones have very similar hacks to curb data usage. Most of these hacks can be found right under Settings in both phones, so play around with them. Just remember to turn that Wi-Fi on if you want to share these tips on social media!

Soothing Feelings:Giving your body some special treatment is a natural way to relieve stress. Other than keeping your skin soft and your body in good repair, spa-related activities like massage and warm baths have been known to sooth even small colicky babies like nothing else. Such activities continue to be eective tools for relaxation as we get older, but we sometimes forget to utilize them.

Once you’ve decided it’s time to start nurturing yourself and your body with some spa treatments, be sure to block o some time where you won’t be interrupted. Then you can put on some soothing music, and try some or all of the following suggestions:

Take a Bath: Get out the bubbles, oils and scented soaps, and soak until you’re wrinkled.

Deep-Condition Your Hair: While you’re in the tub, put on a deep- conditioning treatment for your hair, and let it work as you relax.

Deep-Clean Your Pores: With a nice clay masque, you can draw impurities out of your skin and stress out of your system.

Care For Your Feet: After you soak your feet to soften calloused skin, use a pumice stone to slough o dead skin, and nish with a rich foot cream, and perhaps polish.

Nourish Your Skin: Rich, luxurious creams smell wonderful and feel smooth, especially if you exfoliate your skin in the tub before putting them on.

Tend to Your Nails: Correct the beating your nails probably take from your busy

life (especially for those of you who bite your nails!) by ling and bung. A coat of polish on can make you feel like a princess for days afterward. (This is probably more for my female readers.)

Get a Massage: This one can be especially nice. If your budget doesn’t allow for regular massages with a professional, see if you can trade with a friend or your spouse, or use an electronic massager.

In addition to pampering yourself, more substantial forms of self care involving healthy lifestyle choices are important, too. Consuming a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and being sure you get enough sleep are all important for long term health and stress management as well.

Many of us have so many responsibilities in life that we forget to take care of ourselves. And while it’s hard to prioritize something like taking a bath when you have so many other priorities in life, self care is an important aspect of stress management. A massage, soak in the tub or other forms of pampering revitalize you inside and out. And taking time out to treat your body like the temple it is has other benets:

Self Care and Your Physical Health:While self-pampering doesn’t always lead to major improvements in overall health the way healthy diet and exercise do, the relaxation you get from it can trigger the relaxation response, which can prevent chronic stress from damaging your health, so in a sense, self-care is good for you inside and out.

Self Care and Your Emotional Health:Taking time out to care for yourself can remind you and others that you and your needs are important, too. Having a well-cared-for body can make you feel good about yourself and your life, and conveys to others that you value yourself.

This can contribute to long-term feelings of wellbeing.

Self Care Makes You a Better Caretaker:People who neglect their own needs and forget to nurture themselves are at danger of deeper levels of unhappiness, low self-esteem and feelings of resentment. Also, sometimes people who spend their time only taking care of others can be at risk for getting burned out on all the giving, which makes it more dicult to care for others or themselves. Taking time to care for yourself regularly can make you a better caretaker for others.

Taking a few hours for a spa experience and some much-deserved self care is also an eective way to manage stress for the following reasons:

A Break from Stress:Taking a break amidst a tub of warm bubbles or under the warm hands of an experienced masseuse can help you feel like you’re escaping a stressful reality and taking a mental and emotional vacation. It triggers the relaxation response, and allows you to come back to the reality of your life feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Time Alone: While everyone has varying degrees of introversion and extroversion, having some time alone is important for most people’s functioning. When you’re relaxing by yourself, it’s much easier to slip into a state of quiet meditation, enjoy some self-reection, or let your problems work themselves out in the back of your mind, without taking all of your focused concentration.

Page 11: Dont’ forget to take care of you!€¦ · Pg 2 ValleyWomensNetworkTriCity.com February 2016 The Voice magazine is printed by: TLC Print Brokering The One Stop Source for All Your

In business there are two ways you can go: the way you planned it and the way you didn't. That is if you have actually made a plan. Yep - I know there are some of you out there who are just running by the seat of your pants! Either way, keep reading. So the saying goes, "The best laid plans... always fail". But I'd like to reframe that. It's more like the results don't reect the way you planned to go. This can be because you missed the crucial step of having clarity.Clarity can take a long while to achieve. BUT the wait is worth it and once you have a strong plan staying true to course is VITAL!

Why? (There are hundreds of reasons, but we’ll focus on TWO MAJOR REASONS...)

To get to the next level you must Stick to your plan because...1. It helps you know what you will say yes and no to.

When you have a plan and know where you are going, you can easily see where you aren't going. That should be obvious, right? Well I'll tell you that it's not. No matter what your plan is you will be oered opportunities that could be so enticing that you say yes. But please refer to your plan and ask, ”Does this forward me and my business or just their agenda?” It has to be a win-win (at least on some level). Then ask yourself, “Is there time and space for this?” If it's a yes to both and it’s just that good to pass up - adjust your plan and then keep trucking on. 2. You need to know where you are. When you’re sticking to the plan it will be obvious when you hit a milestone. And having measurable milestones are imperative to celebrating. This can be the core of the motivation and momentum for many people. Then it will also be clear how far you still have to go. When you deviate from the plan it can feel like you are taking the scenic route. The worst part is that many people get lost here. They can even end up further away from their goals than when they started. Which can leave you feeling confused, frustrated or make you even give up.

DISCLAIMER: These reasons are based on you having a plan in the rst place, that you have spent a bit of time on. That the plan takes into account all areas of life AND that plan is a GREAT plan for you, Not others!.If at any point the previous comments about a plan are not there or the plan isn't working you have permission (and really need) to make changes. Because you then are just swapping out the old plan for a new one. So instead of making it up as you go you are still on YOUR plan.

What now you ask? Make a plan and stick to it! You’ll benet in the long run and day-to-day. Double benets for not just your business, but for your life!

The Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) has become a very popular personal savings vehicle. And with good reason: Who doesn’t like the idea of tax-free savings growth? In fact, the TFSA has been called the most important savings option since the 1950’s launch of Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs). If you haven’t already hopped on board the TFSA savings wagon, you may be asking yourself these questions: Is a TFSA really that good? Should I have one? Will it work for me? Good questions! Here are the answers.

How a TFSA worksEvery Canadian over the age of 18 is eligible to save in a TFSA and the investments held within the TFSA grow on a tax-free basis. TFSA withdraw-als can be made at any time for any reason - and the withdrawn money is tax-free.The value of the TFSA eligible investments is increased by making the most of all available contribution room. For example, you can contribute the annual maximum plus the total of withdrawals made in the previous year. And all the contribution room you don’t use right away accumulates year after year so you can ll it any time you choose. It’s important to know that contributions to investments held in a TFSA do not aect RRSP contribution room.TFSAs provide investment exibility. TFSA-eligible investments are virtually the same as those available for investments held within RRSPs, including mutual funds and money market funds, Guaranteed Investment Certicates (GICs), publicly traded securities, and government and corporate bonds.

How a TFSA works for youA TFSA is a worthwhile investment option for almost every income-earning or retired Canadian because it works so well for both short and long-term nancial goals like these:• Providing an immediate source of emergency funds.• Saving for almost anything-from a new car or cottage to a dream vacation.• Saving for the down payment on a new home or even starting a business.• Reducing taxes on your non-registered investments.• Adding to your retirement savings. By the way, TFSA withdrawals don’t aect eligibility for such income-tested benets as Old Age Security (OAS).• Splitting income with your spouse to minimize taxes. To explore these and the many other ways a TFSA can work for you, and to make sure you’ll always get the most from all the elements in your nancial plan, talk to your professional advisor.
