Why are many tech translators so… shy and unassertive?

Pure speculation…1.Because a lot of them are faking it—faking their expertise in the specialist area they claim to master. (See: Turing test)2.Because they feel that it is not cool to be passionate about machine tools, telecommunications, engineering, [fill in blank].3.Because they haven’t realized that genuine technical know-how + going the extra mile with outstanding writing skills + passion = career opportunities.
