TheTories and their ex-mates inUKIP are playing the oldest trick inthe book. Its called divide and rule.

While working class people experiencethe longest squeeze on living standardssince the 1860s they want us to blamemigrants for the problems we face.

ory defence minister Michael Fallontalked this week about British townsbeing swamped and under siege bymigrants.

But it was the bankers and politiciansthat caused the economic crisis, notmigrants. Its the ories, not migrants whoare shutting our hospitals, privatising ourschools and cutting our pay.

Te ories are running scared ofUKIP, who could win another MP in theRochester by-election. So they are talkingtough on immigration to win votes.

We shouldnt fall for these tricks. If weturn on each other it s the ories, UKIPand the bosses who benefit. Divided weare weak. United we have the potential toturn things around.

Striking togetherOn 13 October hundreds of thousandsof health workers, black and white, struckacross England. Te workers who keepour NHS running come from all over theworld. Tey are part of the solution notpart of the problem.

Now NHS workers in Wales willstrike on 10 November and there couldbe more strikes by health workers againstpoverty pay later in November.

On Friday 31 October firefighters inEngland begin a 96 hour strike to defendtheir pensions. University lecturers starta marking boycott on 6 November todefend their pensions too.

And local government workers arevoting on whether to accept or reject newpay offers.

Tere is an urgent need to fight because

times are getting tougher. Tis week wesaw that the gender pay gap is wideningwith women falling further behind underory austerity.

We cant rely on Labours leaders tochange things even if they are elected.Tey intend to stick to ory spending

I would like to get Socialist Worker regularly

plans and keep the public sector pay cap.Disgracefully, theyve even gone alongwith ory and UKIP scapegoating ofmigrants.

While we build for more strike actionwe need a debate about the need fora working class political alternative. IfLabour wont fight for us then we need aparty on the left that will.

RejectedIt was very disappointing unionleaders pulled back from big strikeson 14 October after a proposal fromthe Labour lead Local GovernmentAssociation. Tis proposal was a re-packaged version of the 1 percent offerunions had rejected already.

Its great to see that in Unison, the union representing the most localgovernment workers, there is a bigcampaign to get the strikes back on. ManyScottish local government workers arecurrently campaigning against a similarlylousy offer.

We need a campaign of industrialaction that hits the ories hard and stopsthe attacks.

Te big NHS and civil service strikesand the UC & SUC protests in midOctober showed that could happen.

Workers are willing to fight. Just lookat the strikes by Unison members at CareUK in Doncaster, UCU members atLambeth College and Unite members at StMungos housing charity. GMB membersat recycling centres in Sheffield are set togo on all out strike from this Saturday.

But if we are going to make sure ourunion leaders call the action we needwe need to get organised. Te Unite theResistance conference on Saturday 15November will bring together activistsfrom across Britain to debate the wayforward, build solidarity, and a workingclass response to divide and rule. Comealong and join in.
