LETTER FROM THE BOARD
The Charlotte Land Trust Board ofDirectors is pleased to share this sum-mary of our activities in 2014. All of us
on the board find conservation work inCharlotte to be very gratifying, in large partbecause it feels like a true partnership with ourfellow Charlotters. Conservation is stronglysupported in the Town Plan, through the con-tinued support for the Charlotte ConservationFund and in the enthusiasm that is so oftenevident for preserving Charlotte's best features. We like to remind our fellow Charlotters (andthose who visit) to look out your windows—seewhat, working together, we've all helped createas a legacy. It's truly inspiring for us and we aregrateful for your support.
The Charlotte Land Trust Board of Directors
CONSERVATION
Agreat mix of projects is actively under-way, including agricultural land, forest-land and the potential for some signifi-
cant public access. These projects are in sever-al different sections of town, consistent with ourgoal to promote a diversity of location as well asland type in the portfolio of conserved parcels.Projects can sometimes come together quickly, but often take longer to ensure that conserva-tion goals and landowner needs are thoroughlymet. Although there was no closing on an ease-ment in 2014, we have been very busy with sev-eral exciting projects.
Once a conservation easement is completed, the long-term work for a land trust is just begin-ning. Stewardship—the process of ensuring thatthe terms of an easement are met—is a key partof conservation. Our stewardship committeehas been working to fine-tune our yearly ease-ment reviews, recordkeeping and improvedmarking of easements, including the neweasement boundary markers pictured insidethis report. An important part of their work isto maintain communications with owners ofconserved land.
OUTREACH
Early in 2014 we held the last in a seriesof popular photography workshops thatused conserved lands as its setting.
Many thanks to the landowners who allowed usto access their land for the workshops. In latesummer we co-sponsored, with the CharlotteHistorical Society, a very well-attended presen-tation on the history of Mount Philo withspeaker Judy Chaves. In recognition of theimportance of Mount Philo and its viewshed,CLT has long had a goal to conserve land thatis key to those views.
CLT was once again a participant at theCharlotte Town Party. This is always one ofour favorite outreach events of the year. Weenjoy meeting many of you and hearing youropinions and ideas. If you haven't stopped byour table before, please do so this summer. We'd enjoy meeting you.
ORGANIZATION
CLT continues to operate as a group ofvolunteers and, for another year in2014, was without a board chair. An
unusual way to run things? Perhaps, but it hasworked very well, largely because of the distri-bution of talents on the board and a very clearset of goals, a strong strategic plan and organiza-tional objectives. A core group rotates as meet-ing chair every two months and we work from aschedule of tasks, with subcommittees focusedon specific parts of our work.
CLT has an OrganizationalAssessment Action Plan, cre-ated with the assistance of a
land trust professional, that guides usin making ongoing improvements toall aspects of the land trust's work. The Action Plan serves as a focusand as a checkpoint for us andensures that we steward not only our
conservation work, but also the effi-cient and wise use of donations andgrants that support our work.
In 2014, Tim King and Larry Sommers left theCLT board. We very much appreciate the timeand thoughtful energy they brought to the board.Lindsay Longe joined the board in 2014 and welook forward to adding her expertise and insight toour group.
