Mission Statement:New Generations for Palestinian Children and Youth is an independent, international non-profit organization created to

promote the interests and amplify the voices of Palestinian children and youth inside the occupied territories and

refugee camps. Children and youth make up more than half of the population of these areas, representing a potential for

change that will be positive, negative – or totally untapped, depending on the degree of support and empowerment they

receive. Whereas other international organizations focus primarily on basic developmental requirements, we seek to

build on that foundation and take it further through initiatives that encourage self-actualization. We strive to identify

locally expressed needs and desires, support and amplify grassroots initiatives to fulfill them, and build bridges between

the next generation of Palestinians and their counterparts in North America.

New Generations was founded in 2014 by two communications professionals and activists in Canada and the United

States who share a deeply felt affinity with and experience in “occupied Palestine.” Although expertise and other

contributions are welcome from all quarters, they share a commitment to employing Palestinians in the occupied

territories and refugee camps whenever possible.

Project to be funded:Survey 2014: Giving Voice to Gazan Development Desires

Research: recovery/development desires documented through face-to-face survey format

This project is designed to fill that gap and prevent a “tyranny of (external) experts.” The findings will be widely shared in

various formats and to diverse audiences, including all donors, governments and NGOs, active in and outside Gaza.

This concept is to conduct one-on-one interviews with Palestinians in Gaza who are expert in specific sectors or are

highly engaged in local society and thus have a finger on its “pulse.” This in -depth qualitative research also will be used

to inform a simpler, quantitative survey of the general public regarding general needs, desires and perceptions related to

aid and development.

Many organizations already are providing emergency relief, but are calling for significant additional funding – with their

call reportedly to be addressed at a donors’ conference in Norway in September. However, we have been down this roadbefore, in the aftermath of “Operation Cast Lead” in 2009, and no one has assessed the lessons learned from that similar

re-building effort. In addition, largely left out of the cacophony of “expert voices” are the Palestinians in Gaza

themselves, both civil-society leaders and beneficiaries.

A cohort of youth will also be surveyed along with 50 native NGOs and a spectrum of 2000 individuals in Gaza.

Why project is needed:

July 8, 2014 began 50 days of devastation inflicted on Gaza through intense bombardments by land, sea and air that has

made more than 350,000 people homeless, 100,000 homes made unliveable, the power and sanitation infrastructures

no longer functionable, agricultural land devastated, and so forth.

The survey is designed to give Palestinians in Gaza the opportunity to express their needs in order to transition from the

reliance on aid to self-sufficiency. This novel idea has never been done before, nor have the Palestinians been able to

express their desires that will assist major donors, governments, NGOs in and outside Gaza and others who have a say on

the rebuilding of Gaza.

Location of the project:Gaza Strip, State of Palestine
