a Joint Message

Although medicine has the capacity to cure, it is compassion that holds the power to heal.

That compassion is evident in the generous support from people like you. In 2016, donors to the Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation contributed $3.8 million to help further our mission of improving the health of New Mexicans.

Your relentless spirit of generosity has enabled us to build on our 108-year-old legacy and invest in better care for the communities we serve.

Thank you for your tireless support of Presbyterian, for your caring contributions to our community and for your compassion. Together, we can enhance our power to heal and make a difference in the lives of our friends and neighbors.

a Joint Message

A startling diagnosis. A sudden emergency. An unexpected kindness. Here at the Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation, we often find that action is motivated by the unforeseen; defining moments that, in an instant, can change the world and the way we see ourselves in it.

In 2016, a number of our programs benefited from the generosity of those who turned their experience with adversity into a helping hand for others. Because of these and other donations, we were able to help fund a new Stroke Center, begin providing cutting-edge technology for the Heart Center, assist many more patients undergoing transplants, and upgrade life-saving equipment for our dedicated team of medics and paramedics at Albuquerque Ambulance Service. Some of these stories are featured in this Donor Impact Report, but there are so many more we could tell!

We want to express our deepest gratitude to all of you for your tireless support of our events and fundraisers, for your caring contributions and donations, and for the defining moments that lead not only to heartfelt giving, but inspired living. Together, we are helping to define the future of healthcare not only at Presbyterian, but throughout the State of New Mexico.

Her heart fell when she recognized the man walking outside at 1 a.m., a thin hospital blanket his only shield against the bone-chilling wind. As an emergency medicine physician with Presbyterian Medical Group, Jenny Culver, MD, regularly treats homeless people and tries to provide the comforts they often lack: caring words, a warm place to rest, a meal, a prayer. “You want to be able to help everybody,” she said quietly, “... but you just can’t.”

Instead of feeling overwhelmed, however, Dr. Culver

works to overcome a world of need, volunteering

in the streets of Albuquerque, the villages of Africa

and beyond. Much as a river is made by many

streams, she explained, each person’s contribution

supplies the community, “and that’s what we need to

focus on.”

A Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation board member

for more than 15 years, Dr. Culver has raised funds

for Presbyterian Rust Medical Center, serves on the

Laughter is the Best Medicine committee (she is the

2017 Chair!) and contributes as an annual donor. Part

of her contribution includes naming the Presbyterian

Healthcare Foundation as the beneficiary of a life

insurance policy. “I want to help provide for whatever

the need is after I’m gone and trust the Foundation

will meet that need at that time.”

TO SEE THE

“It’s like leaving an inheritance to my family… and I DO consider Presbyterian family and embrace it as my community.”– Dr. Jenny Culver

After 57 years of marriage, Jay and Mary Benze share not only a strong faith and relaxed sense of humor, but a set of matching pacemakers which they both received in 2013 – a year in which medical challenges led to deepened gratitude.

As a career Air Force couple (he retired as a Chief

Master Sergeant and she a Civil Service Employee),

active church members, community volunteers,

great-grandparents and owners of an engineering

consulting company, the desire to serve others and

stay involved is an integral part of Jay and Mary’s

life. Instead of withdrawing from the world as others

might have when health issues struck hard, they were

compelled to become more fully engaged in it.

Along those lines, Jay and Mary now make monthly

donations as part of the annual Cornerstone

Campaign. Their contributions benefit Presbyterian's

cardiology department and honor Daniel Friedman,

MD, and Hirak Sen, MD, two physicians whose

hearts for healing extends beyond healing hearts.

“It’s a connection,” said Jay, a former Presbyterian

Healthcare Foundation Board member, “that we want

to keep strong.”

Define the ImportanceAnnual and monthly giving programs help fund programs and new technology that will save patients’ lives and improve their quality of living.

A Lifesaving Force“I had a cardiac arrest at home and Jay gave me CPR until the EMTs arrived,” said Mary. “He saved my life, but our doctors kept me safe and have taken care of me ever since.”

“The interfaces with Presbyterian doctors are very personal; it’s different than any other hospital we’ve experienced.”

TO PROTECT AND

SAVEDonor Support Amplifies Albuquerque Ambulance Service

Calm quickly turned to chaos when a patient became aggressive in the back of the ambulance. Startled by the sounds of struggle, Paramedic Rayna Beck sprinted to the cab of the truck to radio for police backup, then rushed to help her partner.

The men and women of Albuquerque Ambulance Service answer about 300 calls daily and out of those, an average of two will require not only saving the lives of others but protecting their own. Calls for police backup have not always gone through reliably, but

recent upgrades are changing that. With the $381,000 you contributed for our 2016 Laughter is the Best Medicine event, signals and equipment have already been upgraded as part of significant improvements that are now making the job of saving lives much safer.

“Instead of going to the truck radio to call Dispatch in an emergency, we can now just hit a button which saves valuable time. In a life or death situation, even 30 seconds is HUGE.”

Define What's VitalSupporting our events and fundraisers, like Laughter is the Best Medicine, provides us with a significant source of funds that make an immediate difference to service providers and patient programs.

The NICU Express

Transporting premature infants to Albuquerque requires a helicopter, an RN, a neonatal nurse practitioner, and costs up to $30,000. This infant transport unit, purchased by Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation, now allows specially trained critical care medics to bring tiny patients to the NICU by ground for about $1,000.

No Words Necessary

Orange “panic buttons” recently installed on handheld radios automatically transmit the unit number and location of a crew in trouble so that dispatchers can quickly send police.

Every gift to Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation makes a difference, helping to support new care programs, technical innovations, advanced education, and patient assistance. The Foundation works with the Presbyterian community to identify the areas of greatest need – and greatest opportunity. Contributions to the Foundation can be directed to specific areas of interest, or can be designated as an unrestricted contribution, which is increasingly important in helping address critical needs. Every dollar goes directly to fund Presbyterian programs and services.

Guardian Angel Gift Honors NICU Nurses

IN GOODHANDS

“Seeing the girls every day – how happy and ornery they are – and realizing we might not have them if we weren’t taken such good care of … those nurses will have a special place in our hearts forever.”

Beto Dominguez with daughters Aubriella (L) and Kinzleigh, born May 21, 2015.

Tiny and intimidating. That’s what Robbi Jo Dominguez thought when she first held her twin daughters. Born eight weeks early, they weighed just over three pounds each, were hooked up to wires, surrounded by lights and appeared very fragile.

Away from their home in Raton, she and husband Beto spent the next month in the Albuquerque Presbyterian Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) weathering setbacks, celebrating progress and relying on the nurses who “really knew what they were doing … it helped us to know that our girls were in such good hands.”

To honor nurses Jeanette Autrey, Claire Robison and Emily Heath, the Dominguez family recently made a Guardian Angel contribution to benefit the area of greatest need. “This will never be as big as what they did for us,” they said, “but is one way of saying thank you.”

Kinzleigh and Aubriella are now busy, thriving two-year-olds who love to color, play with toy horses, cook in their kid-size kitchen and blow bubbles outside.

"Now," said Robbi Jo, "you'd never know they were such tiny little babies."

Care Package

“Being away from your family and friends was easier because these nurses took us in like they’d known us forever. They’re not just worrying about the babies, but about the parents, too, and it’s so nice to have that support.”

–Robbi Jo Dominguez

The Art of CalmThis is an overwhelming experience for parents. They almost have to mourn what they thought was going to happen and come to terms with life here for a while. The journey actually begins, however, when they leave the hospital. Preemies are more susceptible to infection and choking, while many go home on oxygen and some with G-Tubes. We teach parents how to manage all of that, so they’re comfortable and know what to do.

–NICU Nurses Claire Robison and Jeanette Autrey

Define GreatnessHonor a physician, nurse or Presbyterian employee whose care has made a difference in your life with a Guardian Angel gift to benefit patient services and programs.

Everyone knew Sara Ashe as the “glue that keeps people together,” and even now, nearly 20 years after her death, she continues to unite both her family and a car-loving community to benefit those who care.

During the year she went between hospice and home

healthcare, Sara, who suffered from rheumatic heart

disease, had good days when she “pepped up,” and

bad days; a time of unpredictability and roller coaster

emotions that felt, according to youngest son Paul,

“kind of like being in a cloud.”

Just two months after Sara passed away in June

1998, her four sons and their wives rallied to thank

hospice professionals for their constant guidance

and comfort during that agonizing time and

established the Sunset Grille and Bar Car Show. As

of 2016, this event had raised a total of $216,660 for

Presbyterian Hospice.

Since 1998, all car show proceeds have benefited

the Hospice Healing Garden at Kaseman Hospital

and the Hospice Berevement Fund to assist grieving

families with funeral and temporary living expenses.

Owners of the Sunset Grille & Bar, car show organizers and husband and wife teams Paul and Fran Perea (front) and Chris and Maureen Perea.

Family Strength

“If she had been here, she probably would have implemented the Car Show Queen of the Day… and she would have been it!” said Fran Perea of Sara Ashe, who, according to the family, would have loved seeing all four of her sons come together to “offer the best they can.”

Define Your DevotionHonor the life of someone you love with a hospice gift to guide families as they say goodbye.

“We would’ve been lost, especially as four boys, we’d never dealt with anything like that before. Losing our mom was tragic, but at the same time, very peaceful. Hospice helped us understand that.”

Revved Up for Hospice

Many exhibitors add a donation to their entrance fee for this event which has grown from 30 cars the first year to 124.

“Everybody has a hospice story,” said Maureen Perea, “and they contribute because they KNOW what it’s like.”

*The Perea family wishes to thank Matt and Annette Torres, producers of the Supernationals Custom Auto Show, for 20 years of help and the original idea of holding a car show to benefit hospice.

Perhaps it was coincidence, or possibly fate, that brought Sharon Moeser and Linda Weil together at a crucial moment when one was nearly out of options and the other uniquely prepared to offer a second chance.

Diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease in 1991,

Linda had been on the UNOS organ match list since

2009 and was nearly a candidate for dialysis in 2011

when she met Sharon through a mutual friend. As

an established potential donor for her mother –

who ultimately did not need a transplant – Sharon

remained passionate about sharing her gift of health

and maintained that resolve right up to January 12,

2012, when she gave Linda a kidney and forged a

bond – for life.

To assist and encourage others, Linda established

Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation’s Living

Donor Appreciation Fund for Patient Assistance, a

permanent fund invested for growth, to help cover

travel and lodging expenses incurred for kidney

transplant screening and surgery.

“I could never match the gift Sharon gave me,” said

Linda. “But I can try by helping to support our

transplant patients in need of financial assistance.”
