Nine south Florida hospitals honor organ donor heroes with a display of a “Tree of Life” monument. St. Mary’s Medical Center joined the group in 2018, making it ten hospitals, by hosting a Tree of Life dedication event. Leadership of the hospital, Life Alliance, Tissue Bank, and Eye Bank, participated in the program followed by donor father, Mark Etheridge sharing his and his son Kenneth Etheridge’s story, along with Heidi Anderson,

mom of liver recipient Deanna Anderson who shared their powerful journey. The monument was

blessed and unveiled to all in attendance.

Christopher Price – “Christopher’s decision to be an organ donor reaffirmed the way he was since childhood. Other people always came before him. I remember my mother (his grandmother) saying in the hospital, ‘this is where he makes a difference.’ Boy was she right!”

– Charles Price, Donor Father

On April 13, LAORA and the south Florida donor programs came together for National Donate Life Blue and Green Day to promote organ, eye and tissue donation awareness. The program involved Celebrity Chef and tissue recipient, Ralph Pagano as master of ceremonies. A mural unveiling, inspired by Donate Life opened the program followed by an array of speakers affected by the power of organ, eye, and tissue donation. Sue Sweetman, living kidney donor, and Broward County Sheriff Captain, Maureen Budjinski, mother to Jason Budjinski who passed away waiting for a life-saving transplant, and heart recipient Satrina Dorsey, member of Ocean Rescue, shared their stories of Hope. For the first time the parents of Alex Haertjens met Marta Davila De Sosa, the recipient of Alex’s liver. Each year, a theme is chosen to represent Donate Life. This year, Donate Life America was inspired by the image of a rainbow and Maya Angelou’s quote, “Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.”

To kick off National Donate Life Month, the south Florida donor programs hosted the first annual Game of Life Kickball event to celebrate the success of organ donation and transplantation. Local transplant centers and south Florida community members participated in support with eleven teams; it was a fun-filled day. It is no shock that after winning three games, Deanna’s Journey took home the trophy for 2018.

Our Donate Life Ambassadors volunteer program is composed by recipients, community members and

donor families. Donor families often find that telling their story is a helpful step in the grieving process. Telling your story is inspiring to others and helps to provide healing. (If you are not ready to share your story, you can participate in other activities, such as inventory, community-tabling events for health fairs, etc.; also, bulk mailing and assisting other donor families at our events).
