& South Carolina in 1767 Father died before he was
born He served in American
Revolution & War of 1812 2 brothers & mother died as
a result of the American Revolution
On his own at 14 yrs. old Married Rachel & settled
on a plantation (Hermitage) in Nashville, TN

HOW DID ANDREW JACKSON EARN THE NICKNAME “OLD HICKORY”?
He was appointed the major general of the Tennessee militia in the War of 1812
February 1813 - He and his troops were sent to New Orleans for
a British invasion.
The invasion never transpired, so he was ordered back to Nashville (no one received pay).
First, he refused to disband.
Short on money and supplies, he walked along side of his men the entire 500 miles of wilderness back to Nashville.
His courage and determination earned him the nickname “Old Hickory” from his men.

War and the War of 1812 Now…in War of 1812, there were 2 large groups of Native
Americans called the Creeks & Cherokees Creeks helped the British during the war of 1812 Cherokees helped the Americans fight against the Creeks
Andrew Jackson led his soldiers against Creeks In March 1814, Creeks lost an important battle in
Alabama (The Battle of Horseshoe Bend) & surrendered to Andrew Jackson As a result, Creeks had to give most of their land in Alabama &
Georgia to Americans in the East
Americans praised Andrew Jackson as a HERO for his war efforts & for gaining the land in Alabama & Georgia
