May/June 2017
… by Melanie Rivera
May and June are a time for honoring our parents.
Celebrations of motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”
This celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church” for a special service. Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other love
tokens.
This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s. Did you know more phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year?
The campaign to celebrate fathers of the nation did not meet with the same enthusiasm– Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day - June 19, 1910. The holiday became more popular –by 1972, President Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held the third Sunday of June.

Tips for Health & Wellness
Improve Vision and Hearing..
Seeing and hearing well are necessary to safely getting
around in the world. For that reason, always keep your
eyeglasses clean and properly adjusted and if you notice that your hearing is not what it use
to be, schedule an appointment with your health
care provider to have your ears checked for ear wax build
-up.
Improve Mobility During the day, older adults should avoid sitting for long
periods of time and they should stand and walk
whenever possible. When sitting, try to concentrate on wiggling your toes, clenching
and unclenching your fists, and rotating your ankles in circles.
This will help improve circulation, strength, balance,
and stamina. Keep Hydrated
Dehydration is one of the most common health problems in seniors because we lose our ability to distinguish when we’re thirsty as we age. It is important to drink up to 8 cups of water daily. To help you reach your goal, try drinking a half-cup of water every half hour for the first eight hours of the day.
