STORYOF THE

MONTH We are happy to announce that the water well funded by Golder Trust for Orphans donations has been successfully drilled and tested. Now the pump can be installed and the well connected to storage tanks and piping.

The well will bring huge benefits to the community. Beyond being a direct water source, it will also allow the project to:

- irrigate crops during the dry months and provide a sustainable food source within those months for the community,

- continue employing the farm workers from the surrounding communities all year round, and

- supply water to the brick making operation. The project (supported by the community) makes their own bricks to build structures needed for the children, their families and the local enterprises.

Earlier this year the project planted rice, maize and macadamia nut trees as their main crops (other than vegetables).

Bulembu School Students:The year at an end, and another one starting!1st November 2017 was an exciting day for the Form 5 (Grade 12 / Matric) students as it marked the end of their school exams! Over the following week they attended their Commissioning Service, which formally celebrated the end of their Secondary/High School careers.

We wish the students all the very best as they enjoy a well-deserved holiday season and make final preparations towards the next chapter of their lives!

As for next year, the new High School prefects have been selected for 2018. These students have proven themselves to be great candidates for the job and we are very proud of them!

AROUND THE GOLDER WORLD…

Thanks to everyone in Australia for their support of Golder Trust for Orphans Week (30th October – 3rd November 2017). This initiative has been running in Australia for a number of years. The objective of this week is to raise awareness about the activities that the Golder Trust is carrying out to support vulnerable children and young adults in impoverished communities.

The Trust relies on the donations made by the employees of Golder Associates and its supporters. Each office hosted a number of different events over the week such as “The Great Golder/GTO Bake Off”, lunch time trivia, colouring-in competitions (for children of Golder employees), various raffles, and matching the correct owner to pictures of pets on display at the office. GTO week happened to coincide with the Melbourne Cup (known as the horse race that stops a nation) week and some events were designed to capture the excitement of that event.

The Adelaide office held a morning tea and a taco lunch which was well attended. There seems to be a tradition building in Brisbane with people bidding to throw a cream pie at their favourite P or A.

Gauteng Offices, South Africa: 947 Cycle Challenge

Thank you to all supporters, events coordinators and sponsors of the above-mentioned events in the various regions/offices. These valuable donations will provide help to

improve the quality of so many lives.

On Sunday 19 November, Golder teams joined thousands of fellow cyclists on an exhilarating 94.7km (58.84 miles) ride around one of Africa’s busiest cities (Johannesburg and surrounding areas in Gauteng).

The route is known to be tough but the camaraderie from other cyclists, as well as the support from the local residents who line the streets make this an unmissable and iconic event!

The 947 Cycle Challenge encourages cyclists to open their hearts as they take to the roads and “Ride for a Purpose”. Our Golder teams and their supporters have done so and dedicated their race to The Golder Trust for Orphans!

Thank you to everyone who came to the fundraising braai on Friday 17th November to support the team. The event raised ZAR4,100 on the day, and this, combined with the money raised via the jerseys and the GivenGain Golder Trust for Orphans 947 support page, is currently coming to a fantastic ZAR12,115 (USD886) – with a few transfers yet to reflect.

Despite the soaring temperatures and various mechanical difficulties, all of the Golder Trust riders had a fun day, with some blistering finish times, and some…finish times!

A big shout out to the riders and towers/pushers of the trident three-man bicycle. Not an easy task to get it up the hills but it was hugely popular with supporters on the route and garnered a lot of attention for the Golder Trust.

Thank you and well done to all the riders that made up the team – Aisling Dower, Mike Whitfield, Warren Aken, Zinhle Sithole, Aiden Stoop, Jon Bond, Michael van Niekerk Este Nel, Doug Richards, and your family and friends.

Well done!
