A Look at October

Oktoberfest

Riverview residents celebrated Oktoberfest with a BBQ meal accompanied with wine & beer. Our chef

also prepared some delicious pretzels and apple strudels. Yum!

Did you know?

The celebration of Oktoberfest originated in 1810 in Munich, Germany. It began as a celebration of the royal wedding between King Ludwig I and Princess

Teresa of Sassonia-Hildburghausen. It was an extensive celebration that included all of Munich’s

residents. Since then, it has become an annual celebration in Munich. It lasts 16-18 days and hosts

over 6 million attendees from around the world every year.

Pumpkin Decorating

Pumpkin decorating was such a fun time. Krystyna did such a wonderful job setting the table for the decoration process. A few of our Riverview ladies joined us on PH1

to get creative and design their own pumpkin. Our pumpkins turned out very diverse! The pumpkins had moustaches, eyelashes and some even had lipstick!

These masterpieces were displayed in the dining room as well as PH1, we hope you enjoyed them!

Scrabble Tournament Round 1

Starting off round 1 of our scrabble tournament were Muriel vs. Stuart and Gaby vs. Evy. Gaby and Evy’s board was a visual delight, very neat as the words naturally fell into a diagonal pattern. On the other side, we had Muriel and Stuart with a board that resulted in many surprise moves. All of our

players did a magnificent job in the first round and Muriel and Evy advanced to the finals.

Scrabble Tournament FINAL

Whew! The final game for our Scrabble Tournament sure was exciting! Evy and Muriel started off with a tight board and it didn’t let up much throughout the course of the game. We must say that both players did a great job adapting to the circumstances and using their skills to work around their difficult tile

draws. We saw some great moves from both players and it was an incredibly close game right

until the very end. The game ended with tied scores of 272… both ladies emerged as winners!

Congratulations Muriel and Evy!

Acting Class with Jane

Acting classes with Jane have been a lot of fun this month and they will

continue throughout November. Have you been keeping up with your vocal

and breathing exercises?

Life Experiences with Lottie

This month, our special speaker for the Life Experiences series was none other than Lottie! Lottie shared many childhood experiences including her move to New York when she was a young child. We loved

getting to hear about her career development and the various organizations she is involved with. Afterwards, Lottie had a Q&A where her fellow residents asked many questions ranging from all the famous people

she is acquainted with to the evolution of women’s workwear throughout the years, goodbye silk stockings! Thank you very much for sharing with us Lottie and thank you to everyone who attended.

Fall Traditions Around the World

Ireland

Modern day Halloween is said to have

originated in Ireland. Rural areas lit bonfires

much like they did during the days of the Celts

and the children dress up and “trick-or treat”

around the neighborhood.

Mexico

Día de los Muertos spans from late night on

October 31st to November 2nd. Altars and

offerings are set to honor the dead who are

said to return to earth during this period of

time. The altars include the deceased

favorite foods, snacks and drinks. Some are

designed to be quite large and elaborate like

the one pictured here.

Poland

Wszystkich Swietych

All Saint’s Day in Poland is a very

important time for remembrance. During

this holiday families go to the cemetery

throughout the day of November 1st to

visit the resting places of their loved ones.

The cemeteries are filled with countless

candles, like the one pictured on the left.
