SeniorS’ Chat
Don’s Column Hello, Happy Hands Members and Friends,
Happy Mother's Day! Happy Memorial Day! Yesterday we celebrated Easter Sunday!
We are enjoying the spring flowers and the budding of the trees. It is always a beautiful time
of the year.
We went to the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) for a self-guided tour on April 10th. We learned that SCOTUS
used to be in the US Capitol until 1835 when a new SCOTUS building was established across the street from
the Capitol. We had a fantastic presentation by Dr. Poorna Kushalnagar on “Deaf Aging Project” at NVRC
on April 17th.
Mark your calendar for May 1st Luncheon at NVRC. See page 2 for more information. It is ELECTION
time. Please see Nancy Rarus if you are interested in serving on FINE TUNERS (AKA BOARD for
HAPPY HANDS. See Page 10 for more information.
Be Happy with Our Awesome Hands!

Dr. Poorna Kushalnagar, director of Deaf Health
Communication and Quality of Life Center at
Gallaudet University, gave a presentation on “Deaf
Aging Project.” The study is funded by the National
Institute on Aging (NIA/NIH). The Deaf Aging
Study collects primary data from deaf older adults
who were born deaf or became deaf before age 13.
Pizza was provided by Dr. Kushalnagar's lab. Some
attendees took the Deaf Aging Survey on site, and
others made appointments to take this survey via
videophone with a lab staff. At the end of the study,
a summary of the findings will be shared at the
national Deaf Seniors of America conference in
September 2019.
For more information about the study, you can visit

Court for a self-guided tour on April 10. They were Peggy &
Paul Daniels, Eileen Goran, Don Ames, Lanny Quarles, and
Sally Newman. Highlights of the tour included the John
Marshall statue, portraits and busts of former Justices, and two
self-supporting marble staircases. There was a 24-minute film
that examined the history of the building, and featured
interviews. It was open-captioned.
