DEBRA WELLSPUBLISHER

Don Rice came into our lives in the mid-nineties when my husband Derrol and I bought The Eagle Press in Fritch. Prior to purchasing the newspaper, I took photos and wrote feature stories for then-owner, Cherry Hamilton.

The photos I took were some of the worst in the history of photography – most were taken with the sun be-hind the subject or – at best – with the subject standing in front of a window. Pho-tos of the 1992 tornado victims consisted mostly of shadowy silhouettes against a backdrop of de-struction.

Once we bought The Eagle Press, Don became my photog tutor. He ex-plained the varieties of cameras, how the lenses worked and how to get a good photo. He gave a tour of his darkroom at the Borger News-Herald

which in turn allowed my husband to improve his darkroom technique. Our photos started improving.

Don has proven to be generous and kind over the years. Not only did he teach us the finer points of photography, but he met Derrol and me at the Stilling Basin and taught us how to scuba dive (sort of). Between bouts of hyperventilation and moss attacks, I thrilled at the number of fish under water and will never forget the experi-ence.

Don, you are a talented man. Your talent, though, runs second to your kind heart and sweet spirit. Thank you for all you do here at the Borger News-Herald as well as throughout the entire County. You’re the best and we’re glad you’re our dedicated photog, one of few in local newspapers throughout the country.

RUSTY BERRYSPORTS EDITOR

Growing up in Borger, it has always been easy for me to see Don Rice as the ulti-mate symbol of the Borger News Herald and for community of Borger as well.

The picture taking of Don Rice is something I remember for essentially my whole life from when he took a picture of me looking at Hot Wheels at K-Mart when I was three or four years old to being there to take various group photos in elementary, ju-nior high, and high school.

While he will always be known for his photography, over the past six years I have learned that Don is even a better man.

In December of 2006, Michelle and I had an encounter with a deer on the Pampa high-way which left us stranded in the dark. After calling my dad to come pick us up and in the middle of trying to figure out what to do, Don came down the highway and pulled over to help us out, even before he knew who we were. Don proved to be a godsend that evening, and he was able to help us and our vehicle get back to Borger safely in one piece.

A year later I started working as the Sports Editor for the paper, and since that time I have learned Don is as dependable of a person as I have ever encountered.

Even when our staff assigns him to be in two or three places at once, you can al-ways count on Don finding a way to take care of each of his assignments.

While taking care of photo assignments, Don is always a “jack of all trades” for the newspaper. If there is something that needs fix-ing, moving, or just to be taken care of when no one else is available, Don is the person we all know who will step in to lend a hand or fix the problem.

In getting to know the man for close to five years, I now consider Don a friend of mine and I give the man the utmost respect for serving the Borger News-Herald and Hutchin-son County for 50 years.

Don’s milestone is something that is nothing short of remarkable and I know he will continue to put out the same dedica-tion to the newspaper for several years to come.

MICHELLE BERRYMANAGING EDITOR

For several months, the Borger News-Herald has been working on plans to honor our longtime photographer Don Rice for 50 years of service to the paper.

Since I began working here in May of 2004, I truly have had the pleasure of getting to know Don better, and have seen hundreds of photographs that he has shot during that time period. He truly has an eye for photography, and can make any picture look good.

Don has always been there when I have needed a picture taken. There have been times I have gotten a phone call asking him to be somewhere within the next 30 min-utes. I call him, and he says, “We’ll get it.”

He has done so, without fail. There are times when Don has come into the BNH offices being the bearer of not-

so-good tidings, either about a wreck, a fire, or some other unfortunate event. While no one likes hearing bad news, especially a newspaper editor, I have appre-

ciated him keeping us in the know and being our eyes out in the field.I am also happy that he has a radio that allows him to keep track of what’s going

on in the area, even in the wee hours. It is truly an invaluable service that he provides us, and I am truly grateful for it.

However, there is one particular memory I have of Don that has nothing to do with the paper. It is still one that rings fresh in my memory to this day.

In December of 2006, my husband and I were headed to Pampa to celebrate a birthday dinner with his best friend and their family at the Plaza Restaurant. We were driving a 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser that we had just purchased.

Out of nowhere, a large deer ran out across the highway. I started slapping my husband leg and saying “Deer, deer!”

Unfortunately, he thought I was saying the other version of this word. Before he could get out of the way, he slammed right into the deer.

We were both stunned by what had just happened, to put it mildly. We tried to continue on with our trip.

However, the front radiator was damaged by the impact of the deer and was leak-ing. There was no way we could go on.

The two of us pulled the car off the road in the middle of pitch-black darkness. We were both shaken and panicking to say the least. We didn’t know what to do or how to proceed.

All of a sudden, out of nowhere, Don pulled up beside us in his SUV. Apparently he was out watching the roads that night for no particular reason.

When he realized it was me in the car with my husband, he parked his car behind us and watched over us as Rusty called his dad to have him come pull us into town.

When Rusty’s dad made it to the scene and the car was hooked up, Don followed us all the way into town until he knew we were okay.

I truly believe he was our guardian angel that night, right where he needed to be at the right time.

Many of the responses I have gotten for Don’s special section, scheduled to come out today, have talked about Don being the kind of guy that would do anything for anybody.

Having known him for the time that I have, I can say without a doubt this is true. Don has been more than just the photographer for our department. He has been a friend.

I know I can’t thank him enough for all he has done for this paper. That would take tons of columns and more space than I have available.

However, I am thankful for his life-long dedication to the Borger News-Herald, his creative eye in getting the best pictures possible, and most impor-tantly, for being there for my husband and me in a time of crisis.

Congratulations, Don, for 50 years of service to the Borger News-Herald. This editor truly does appreciate you!

TARA HOPKINSREPORTER

Before I worked for the Borger News Herald I always knew of Don Rice. I mostly knew about him through Kay Rice, his daughter-in-law.

Kay and I are heavily involved with the Boomtown Community Theater and she would talk about him a lot.

She would say he was one heck of a handyman. When I got hired at the paper, Don wasn’t in the office for very long- he was al-

ways out and about getting those photos. It’s always nice to hear him come in and tell one of his jokes to get the day going

right. When in doubt, call Don.

GINNIE WHITFIELDGRAPHIC DESIGNER

Don,Congratulations on your 50 Years at the Borger News Herald! You are such an

inspiration to me. Your dedication to the community is such an inspiration. I feel very blessed to know you and work with you. You are such a kind person and you take great pictures!! Thank you for everything you do!!

SUSAN RAWLINSCLASSIFIEDS MANAGER

Neither rain, no snow, nor dark of night can stop Don Rice! I cannot count the times Don has come to my rescue!

I am famous for locking my keys in my vehicle for the most unbelievable circum-stances.

Like the grocery store with three elementary kids and two baskets of groceries in tow; or the time I locked the keys in the pickup outside of our garage with the other cars in the garage during a big blizzard.

No matter where I am....Stinnett, Fritch, Lake Meredith, Borger or in the middle of nowhere, Don always come to the rescue! No one is more thankful for him than my husband!
