FOREWORD

AACCUP’s preliminary visit to ICHAMS provided positive insights for

institute’s research and extension team to continue on what it had started

from its maiden issue on December 2008. Aside from answering questions

from the Accreditors regarding the ICHAMS’ agenda on this aspect, we also

clarified some things with regards to publication.

One of those was is it alright to publish materials using water-based

inks from desktop printers? I was expecting an answer like as much as

possible, have your outputs be printed from the press but I was

overwhelmed with their answer that “Kahit nga Xerox ok lang!”

These outputs did not only cover areas of research and extension

but likewise under areas of Faculty, Support to students, Curriculum and

Instruction and Administration

And now were still on the run with our third issue consisting of 16

more-highly-scrutinized student researches and 2 faculty-penned outputs in

pursuit of excellence in nursing research.

Title: ―Development and Validation of a Worktext in Science, Technology and Society‖ Author:Mary Corinne R. Selga,MASE Adviser: Julie N. Mazon, Ph.D The study focused on the development and validation of a worktext in Science, Technology and Society in terms of assessing the availability, adequacy of instructional materials and the needed topics in the course; and the level of validity of the tasks and activities in the developed worktext along content, format and readability. In the construction and development of the worktext, the descriptive method of research was used. The worktext is composed of six chapters. The content of the worktext was subjected to the scrutiny of four competent science teachers; the format was validated by three competent educational media teachers and one validated its readability. All their suggestions and recommendations served as bases for improving the material. The average ratings of all the validators implied that the worktext contributes to the achievement of specific objectives of the subject, provides for the development of higher cognitive skills, was well-organized and well-designed and was suitable to the vocabulary level and ability of the students. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher concludes that (1) there is a need to develop a worktext in Science, Technology and Society that will enhance the performance of nursing students and that will suit their level of understanding; and (2) the developed worktext is valid. The researcher recommends that: (1) the proposed worktext should be evaluated further to determine its effectives through experimentation; (2) teachers may use the worktext to enhance classroom instruction; and (3) more revisions and enrichments are needed to make it more effective and functional.

Behavioral Systems and Coping Mechanisms of Patients with Congestive Heart Failure Lei Marcelle E. Pascua, RN

Adviser: Jill Marie Hermogenes, RN, MAN Objectives and Scope Congestive heart failure behavioral systems model is used by health care providers to help them in understanding and helping a patient suffering from such condition. This study used descriptive type of research utilizing quantitative and qualitative approaches. The main instrument that was used is a questionnaire made by the researcher. Findings The age and occupation has significant relationship with all of the subsystems while gender and highest educational attainment generally do not have significant relationship with most of the behavioral subsystems. A significant relationship was observed between gender and subsystems

Ingestive, Eliminative and Sexual. Educational attainment is significantly correlated with aggressive subsystem.

There were changes that the respondents have experienced for the past month that affected their lives. They have different ways to cope up. Conclusions The proposed congestive heart failure behavioral system model can be utilized by health care providers in caring for patients who suffer from such condition. Recommendations The proposed congestive heart failure behavioral system model should be utilized by health care providers in caring for patients who suffer from such condition. Those patients who have low educational status and those who do not practice functional coping mechanisms should be helped thru teaching, role modeling and counseling of the coping mechanisms they can use. Nurses in the clinical area and in the community are encouraged to do some health teachings that strengthen and develop the coping mechanism of a patient.

Title: Near Death Experiences of Patients Diagnosed With Cardiovascular

Diseases, Respiratory Diseases and Vehicular Accidents in Selected Areas in La Union

Authors: Robert Q. Cabilatazan, Ruby M. Calonge, Haydee B. del Rosario, Girlie Liezel O. Laroya, Rhodessa V. Laroya

Adviser: Holly Lou E.Mangaoang, RN, MAN The study was conducted from June to December 2009. Non probabilistic quota sampling technique was done and thirty respondents who were diagnosed with cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases and vehicular accidents were selected in the different areas in La Union. The study was descriptive-survey method and a structured checklist questionnaire was used. Results show that most of the respondents belong to fifty three (53) to sixty four (64) age group, more are males, Roman Catholics, with non-profession occupation with monthly income below five thousand (5000.00) pesos. Many of the respondents had physical near-death experiences while only few had spiritual near death experience. Subsequently, the near death experiences of the respondents were found to have no significant difference in terms of the cause. Likewise, the near death experiences do not significantly differ when the respondents are grouped according to age, gender, occupation, estimated monthly income and highest educational attainment. However, the near death experiences differ as to religion. Information dissemination should be done to health providers in the form of seminars and lectures and the results of the study can be added in the course discussion to the student nurses in the classroom and clinical setting. The researchers advocate that members of the health care team implement the STOP DEATH strategy which represents the necessary interventions to be carried out to clients in near death. Other researchers can explore further about the near death experiences of people diagnosed with other problems like gastrointestinal, endocrine, reproductive and many more in different location including other variables such as race, ethnic background, type of family structure and the like.

Title: “Effects of Hospital Visit on the Pain Level of Post-CS Clients at ITRMC‖ Researchers: Floravel Dilinila, Emelanie Diza, Shieladelle Dulay, Juan Miguel Fernandez, Pav Harry Fregillana.

The research was conducted to find out the effects of hospital visit on the pain level

of post-CS clients at ITRMC. The design is descriptive and fifteen (15) patients who undergone Caesarian Section Operation and were admitted for one (1) day at ITRMC (OB Ward) were selected by Convenience Sampling. Structured interview using a guide question was done.

It was found that hospital visit decreases the pain level of post-CS clients at ITRMC with a mean difference of 1.87, closeness of relationship is one factor of hospital visit that is significant in decreasing the pain level of post-CS clients at ITRMC with a regression coefficient of 1.000, the number of visitor is not significant in decreasing the pain level of post-CS clients at ITRMC with a regression coefficient of -0.183, the time of visit is not significant in decreasing the pain level of post-CS clients at ITRMC with a regression coefficient of 0.698, and things brought to hospital is one factor of hospital visit with a regression coefficient of 1.358 which make it significant in decreasing the pain level of post-CS clients at ITRMC.

It is recommended that close relatives of post-caesarian section clients are encouraged to visit and bring something such as food, money and clothes. Health care providers should educate the visitors regarding the importance of hospital visit to the alleviation of pain to patients. A similar study should be made in other hospitals not only to post-CS clients but also to other post surgery patients with the use of additional variables that would identify specific things brought to hospital, the degree of closeness of relationship of visitor to client including the client’s profile such as the monthly income, age and number of times the client undergone caesarian section that can affect the pain level of post-CS client.

Title: ―Leptospirosis Awareness on Selected Flood-Risk Barangays of La Union‖

Authors: Anna Ruth M. Gatchalian, Carla Joyce N. Laron, Jan Alan B. Rosimo, Michelle A. Solomon, Maria Shiela G. Valdez

Adviser: Ronaldo O. Asuncion, M.D.

The study aimed to determine the leptospirosis awareness in flood-risk barangays of La Union. The study was conducted in Brgy. Sta. Lucia, Aringay, La Union, Brgy. Natividad, Naguilian, La Union, and Brgy. Pudoc, Bauang, La Union where in respondents were particularly the residents of the said barangays. The descriptive method was used using a questionnaire.

Majority of the respondents are young adults who have reached tertiary level of education, are dominated by female, who are non-working and are Roman Catholic. The respondents were aware on the mode of entry, mode of transmission, clinical manifestations, safety measures and management but are not aware on the etiology of leptospirosis. The age, gender, educational attainment, occupation, and religious affiliation doesn’t significantly influence the residents from the flooded areas on their level of awareness regarding leptospirosis.

The researchers recommend that health worker in the RHU and local government unit must have proper information dissemination regarding leptospirosis, emphasize environmental sanitation, teaching about the proper safety precautions and develop the interest of the respondents through health related magazines, brochures, pamphlets, listening and watching health programs etc.

Title: ―Perceptions of Senior Citizens on Health Care Services at Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center‖

Authors: Fangonilo, Virginia A., Minde, Jerusah Hannah V., Padilla, Joy-Ann B.,

Rivera, Crischelle Ann V. Thesis Adviser: Mr. Eric Pelson E. Salvador, RN, MAN

The study aimed to determine the perception of senior citizens on health care

services rendered by Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center to the Senior Citizen patients. The research methodology followed the descriptive-correlational survey method, with the use of a questionnaire as the main data gathering instrument. Frequency and percentage were used to determine the profile of the 30 senior citizen patients.

Results revealed that most respondents are seventy (70) to seventy nine (79) years old, females, are married or used to be married, reached elementary levels or graduates and with a family monthly income of five thousand (5000) pesos and above.

The Average Weighted Mean of the respondents’ perception on health care services rendered to Senior Citizens in terms of Quality is 4.48, verbally interpreted as excellent. The AWM of their perception on the health care services rendered to them in terms of Satisfaction is 4.58, also verbally interpreted as excellent. Furthermore, the AWM of the respondents’ perception on health care services rendered to them in terms of Sufficiency is 4.23 – this is also verbally interpreted as excellent. These figures average to a grand mean of 4.43.

In terms of the correlation, it was found out that none of the respondents’ profile bear significant relationship with their perception on health care services rendered to senior citizen patients. There is also no significant difference in the respondents’ perception on health care services when classified according to Quality, Satisfaction and sufficiency.

The researchers recommend that there should be continuing services for older persons provided by the government. Efforts should be made to communicate effectively with older persons and their families to inform them about these programs and services. Health care should continue giving more emphasis on early detection of diseases among the elderly. Health care services and interventions should be more sensitive to the needs and requirements of older clients and their families to support efforts towards lifestyle changes. The study regarding the perception on health care services should be replicated in other provinces for more representative results. Health Care Providers must always advocate the patient’s bill of rights especially Senior Citizen patients. Hospital supplies must always be available. The hospital should continue in providing quality, satisfactory and sufficient health care services to Senior Citizens as well as to other clients and they should maintain cleanliness and adequate ventilation conducive to faster recovery of patients.

Title: ―The Analgesic Potential of Traditional Hilot Among Sprained Clients‖ Researchers: Cacas, Ruby, Calderon, Mark Villamor, Embernate, Mary Ann, Fernandez, Jan, Galvez,

Darmaine Research Adiviser: Melchor Cisnero

The practice of traditional medicine, which was passed on from generation to generation has gained a deep significance in health delivery. The researchers join the objective of the Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act (TAMA) of 1997 to conduct scientific researches on and develop traditional and alternative health care systems that have direct impact on public health care. This research aims to determine the analgesic effect of traditional hilot in sprained clients. Specifically, it aims to answer the following: (a) is there a significant difference between the pain perception before and after the hilot treatment? (b) Is there a significant difference among the treatment in terms of perception of pain relief after each treatment. This work presents the comparisons of the three different treatments on their effectiveness to relieve the pain among sprained clients. Quasi-experimental design of research was used. The t-test was used to compare results of pain being felt before and after the hilot and it shows that hilot treatment has decreased the pain being felt by the clients. The Analysis of Variance was also used to compare the results of the hilot treatment among Paracetamol treatment and to those without special treatments. The result of the ANOVA shows that hilot treatment is just as effective as the Paracetamol treatment. Among the three, Paracetamol treatment is the most effective followed by the hilot treatment then those without special treatments. In conclusion, all the treatments used are effective in relieving pain. It is recommended that all treatments used in the study can be utilized by sprained clients in relieving pain. Since Paracetamol treatment is proven to be effective in relieving pain and showed the highest average among the three treatments used, sprained clients who have moderate to severe pain may use this. The use of positioning and hot and cold compress, thou had the lowest average, may also be use in relieving mild pain. Hilot treatment can also be use as a relief to mild to moderate pain for sprained clients. Further studies should be made to support the significant difference between the perception of pain among sprained clients before and after the hilot treatment. Further studies should be made to support that there is is no significant difference between the perceptions of pain among sprained clients to the three treatments.
