It is with sincere pleasure that we invite you to the 17th Annual Sale. We are excited about the offering as it represents the culmination of 30 years of breeding beginning with one show heifer and about a dozen other cows added throughout the years.

This year, we have done some things different with the bulls. The spring yearling bulls are being fed in Nebraska by Dan. They will be delivered to Farmers & Ranchers on Friday, March 8th. If you would like to see video or photos of the bulls before, we will have them available via email or on the facebook page. Also, this year the bulls will be ultra sound with data available at the sale or by March 1st.

We have continued with our main goal - producing bulls for the commercial cattlemen. Every pedigree includes proven sires representing some of the top producing bulls in the breed. We continue to breed based on balanced EPD’s and visual evaluation of structural soundness and eye appeal. We have placed importance on positive scrotal EPD’s to ensure fertility for their sons as well as for their daughters; moderated frame sires to maintain a moderate sized cow; and last, and probably one of the most important, a high Docility EPD. Disposition of the cattle is of upmost importance. We don’t need a wild one and you don’t either.

Again, the bulls were not weaned until the end of October. Therefore, the adjusted 205 weaning weights were not able to be computed for all of the bulls.

Ranking: In the footnotes several of the lots have been recognized for being in the top 25% of a trait of the non-parent bulls/cows for the breed. The American Angus Association updates the EPDs weekly. The database is then group into four different categories. The categories are Current bulls and Current cows with at least one calf recorded. The other two categories are non-parent bulls and cows which do not have a calves recorded. EPDs listed in the catalog are as 2/11/2013. Announcements: Auction block announcements regarding the cattle selling in the sale take precedence over information listed in this catalog.

Meal: A complimentary, dinner will be served sale day by Farmers and Ranchers Café at 5:30 p.m.

Inspection of Cattle: An open house will be held Saturday, March 2nd , at Johannes Farms, Columbus, NE. However, the bulls are available for viewing at anytime at Johannes Farms until Friday March 8th. Herd Health: The bulls in the sale have been preweaned and weaning vaccinated for respiratory disease, including pasteurella. They will be poured and dewormed before the sale.

Bulls have been examined for breeding soundness and passed a semen test and provided to the buyer of the bull.

Genetic Defects: All individuals that sale have been determined free of known genetic defects through a combination of DNA and pedigree assessment.

Additional Information: Photos and Video of bulls will be available after March 1st by email, disc or on Don Johnson Angus facebook page or by email at [email protected]. A supplemental sheet will be available sale day with scrotal measurements, ultrasound data and updated EPD’s.

Guarantee: We guarantee that all breeding cattle, sold in this sale are fertile to the best of our knowledge. If they are injured anytime during the first breeding season after they are purchased so as to make them functionally infertile in the case of bulls, we will provide you with a satisfactory replacement if available or issue you credit equal to the your purchase minus salvage value. That credit may be used toward the purchase of any animal in a future sale. We must be notified before you cull the infertile animal. We would suggest that normal care still needs to be exercised toward these animals, especially yearling bulls not to be allowed to get too thin.

EPD Terms

Calving Ease Direct (CE), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD(BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. For use of a bull on virgin heifers, the (CE) and (BW) EPDs are a

primary consideration. Weaning Weight EPD(WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD(YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. If you background your calves, concentration should be placed on yearling weight (YW) EPD. Calving Ease Maternal(CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD(Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. If you keep replacement heifers, emphasis should be placed on Milk(Milk), Calving Ease Maternal(CEM), and Scrotal EPD’s.
