Working in pairs, cut up the 8 dominoes below and place them face up on the table. Each domino has information about the people (stakeholders) involved in one international food journey. To get started find the card that says ‘Anthony Mucheke, a green bean farmer’ and place this card as your first domino. Take in turns to read the information on the card and find a picture on one of the other dominoes that goes with the description that you have read. Place the picture next to the description. Read out the description on the new card and look for the picture that goes with it. Continue in this way to connect the dominoes. WOMEN BEAN PICKERS WORKING IN THE FIELD Bean farming needs a large numbers of workers (labour). The women bean pickers have a good income during the harvest time. The supermarket Waitrose requires all farmers to meet high standards. Waitrose is now providing training so that African growers like Anthony get their produce to the standards expected for selling in Uk stores.

once the beans are picked they are carried in containers from the fields to the sorting room on the farm. Any beans that have soil marks or are poorly shaped will be rejected here.

Edwin kakundi is a farming advisor. he visits Anthony’s farm and explains how to prevent pest and disease problems, and how to manage the soil and water efficiently.

Everyday Kariuki collects beans from five different farms and takes them to the packhouse.

(Later, he takes the beans to the airport at Nairobi ready for export to Europe.)
