created a garden bed for flowers and herbs called Dominic’s Garden. St. Dominic’s Volunteer, New Directions for Over 55 Member and Master Gardener John Malanchak and Dominicare teachers discussed the process of gardening with the children as they planted their vegetation. John Malanchak has continued to work with the children at Dominicare in caring for their garden of flowers and herbs.

Dominic’s Garden continued to grow at St. Catherine’s Village Campbell Cove with a salad table (raised flower bed) donated by the Pine Belt Master Gardeners. It is the 513th gardening table that has been donated in the state by the Pine Belt Master Gardeners. The table has been placed in the courtyard by Camellia Bay in hopes of stirring memories with the smell of thyme, chives, dill, tomato and flowers. John volunteers regularly at Campbell Cove giving gardening demonstrations and caring for the salad table.

Upon hearing about these great projects, New Directions for Over 55 decided to conduct a workshop called “The Therapeutic Benefits of Gardening” where John discussed the physical, mental and spiritual renewal that comes from gardening. He talked about how gardening can help prevent injury by increasing your strength

and endurance; increase your mobility and flexibility; ease stress and anxiety and boost mood.

This also prompted New Directions for Over 55 to expand Dominic’s Garden by adding Dominic’s Garden Club to their monthly programs and events schedule. John conducts informal discussions on what you are doing with your house plants, vegetable, flower and/or perennial gardens. He talks about what works and doesn’t work and members are encouraged to discuss and ask questions on any gardening related topics. THE COMPASS FUND IS ON TRACK FOR A HUGE IMPACT!Happy fall season everyone! Can you believe it’s been almost a year since the kickoff of the third New Directions for Over 55 Compass Fund campaign?! This Compass Fund campaign is focused on supporting the Emergency Department expansion at St. Dominic’s with a goal of raising $25,000! Sound like a lofty goal? Well, to date, the tremendous support of New Directions members has pushed the funds raised to over $11,300! With a $10,000 matching contribution from the St. Dominic’s Foundation Board of Directors, which we plan on asking for this month, the Compass Fund goal of $25,000 will be within easy reach. We will have less than $3,700 remaining to meet our goal! Please, help the New Directions for Over 55 Compass Fund meet and surpass it’s goal. Any funds raised over this campaign’s goal will be applied to the next Compass Fund campaign. New Directions members will be recognized in the new Emergency Department for their generosity and commitment to helping St. Dominic’s maintain the highest quality health care in the state.

Help New Directions share the holiday spirit again this year by participating in the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program! Home Instead Senior Care sponsors the program which positively impacts our community by providing holiday cheer and gift giving to seniors who are least likely to receive a present during the holiday season, and are lonely and needy.

Each year New Directions takes on this community service project by asking our members to bring one new item to our annual Holiday Reception. Items may include blankets, pajamas, hair brushes, crossword puzzle books and toiletry items such as lotions, soaps, shampoo, powder, etc. We will also have a tree with “Be a Santa to a Senior” ornaments in our reception area for anyone who would like to adopt a needy senior.
