Dominic Beer1956-2013
Dominic was born in Reading on the 4th November 1956 to Susanna and Michael Beer
He attended Leighton Park School in Reading from 1969-1974
He then attended Oxford University from 1975-1978 studying Modern History and Modern Languages
Early Life and Schooling
Early Medical Career
• He began his medical training in 1978 at Guy’s Hospital in London and qualified in 1984
• He completed his post-doctoral research fellowship for the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine
• He became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1989
• Between 1990-1994 he worked as Senior Registrar at Guy’s Hospital/South East Thames
Medical Career
• Since 1994 he worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist for a 15 bed Challenging Behaviour Ward
• He had an active teaching career at Guy’s, King’s, St Thomas’ University of London and was visiting lecturer at other universities
• He was head of Research and Development and Clinic Audit for Oxleas
• He has published over 70 research papers and was assistant editor of the History of Psychiatry
• He was also co-author of the Psychiatric Intensive Care textbook
• In 2004 he was made fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatry
NAPICU
• Along with a core group Dominic was at the forefront of the revolution in psychiatric intensive care
• It was the poor conditions on many locked wards which prompted the first nationwide survey of PICUs by Dominic Beer, Stephen Pereira and Carol Paton
• It was found that the majority did not have a policy on the use of rapid tranquillisations
• This survey prompted the idea for the formation of a National PICU Group which involved into NAPICU
• The first national conference was held in 1996 on psychiatric intensive care in Kent
• NAPICU was formed the same year
NAPICU
• Dominic was one of the key founding members of NAPICU
• Dominic served as the first chairman from 1997-2001
• He was instrumental in gaining the support of various regions in the UK
• His particular skill was in establishing systematic procedures and operational matters
• He was an active contributor to the NELMHT PICU Research Group that created the DOH National Minimal Standards
• He has helped better the lives of many patients with severe mental illness in his own practice and together with NAPICU colleagues on a much wider scale
