School—5491 4522 Unity College – 5490 5777 We recognise the traditional owners of this land the Gubbi Gubbi peoples. Reflecting on the Creed Early in the 4 th Century, controversies abounded concerning the nature of Jesus and his relationship to God. To resolve the debates, Constantine called the Council of Nicaea (325 CE). Central Christian beliefs were written in the language of the people and issued as the Apostles’ Creed. At the Council of Constantinople (381 CE), these ancient and important statements were further developed into the Nicene Creed. The Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed are still recited in Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Protestant churches. The creeds originate from the time before there was a Catholic and an Or- thodox Church; from before there were Catholic, Anglican and Protestant splits. The creeds are a core part of what unites all Christians as members of the one family and pass on the good news of Jesus Christ from genera- tion to generation. “Every article of the Creed tells us something about what it means for God to be love (1 John 4:8) and to love us. If we do not read it as bringing us deeper into the mystery of God’s love for us, we have misunderstood it. So when we assert that we believe in God who cre- ated the heavens and the earth, we are not offering an explanation for the existence of the Universe. We assert that all that exists is a fruit of God’s love … When we proclaim that the Son is true God from true God we are saying that Jesus does not just tell us about God’s love, but that in sharing his life we are taken up into the divine love. Christi- anity is not a moral theory but a love story between God and humani- ty that was consummated in Christ. And when we say we believe in the forgiveness of sins, we are saying that this love can overcome all hatred, all the negativity of the human heart and will have the final vic- tory.” Timothy Radcliffe, Take the Plunge: Living Baptism and Confirmation (London: Bloomsbury Publishing, 2012), p.140: Every Sunday as we celebrate Mass we give thanks and praise to God and profess our faith in the words of either the Apostles’ Creed or Nicene Creed. Although living a sacramental life involves more than showing up for Mass on Sundays, for Catholics celebrating Eucharist in community is the summit and source of all our activity. “The Eucharist guarantees that everything in our life is sacred; that nothing is lost; that no bitter tear or heartfelt wish is ever wasted; that nothing is ‘merely’ human anymore; that no sin is ever left unredeemed; that everything, in the end, is harvest.” Daniel O’Leary, Begin with the Heart, (Dublin: The Columba Press, 2008), p.47.
