Cowboys Overview Players to Watch How They Match Up
n a stark contrast from last year, the Cowboys havent gotten a lot of attention this summer when potential Super Bowl contenders from the NFC are being discussed. After what happened in 2010, that might be a good thing. After a 6-10 showing, the Cowboys are in somewhat of a rebuilding mode this year as they said goodbye after the end of the lockout to a group of established veterans running back Marion Barber, wide receiver Roy Williams, guard Leonard Davis and tackle Marc Colombo, who ended up signing with the Dolphins. Former Dolphins assistant coach Jason Garrett is embarking on his first full season as head coach after taking over for Wade Phillips following a disastrous start in 2010. Theres another significant change on defense as Rob Ryan takes over as coordinator for another former Dolphins assistant coach, Paul Pasqualoni. While many observers expect the Cowboys to be looking up at the Eagles and Giants in the NFC East standings, there remains a lot of talent on this roster. It starts at quarterback with Tony Romo, who was on his way to a highly productive season (94.9 passer rating) in 2010 before he went down with a season-ending injury in a Week 7 loss to the Giants. After splitting carries in his first three years in the league, Felix Jones is expected to take over the feature role at running back and the expectations are high for the former first-round pick from the University of Arkansas. Despite the loss of Williams, the passing game still features plenty of talented targets, such as Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten, Pro Bowl wide receiver Miles Austin and 2010 firstround pick Dez Bryant. The offensive line, however, might be a question mark after the departures of longtime contributors Davis and Colombo, as well as a preseason injury sustained by projected starting guard Montrae Holland. Its on defense where the Cowboys will need to make significant improvement if they hope to return to the playoffs in 2011. Dallas ranked 23rd in total defense a year ago, but allowed more points (436) than anybody in the league except Denver. The secondary was particularly problematic. The Cowboys allowed 33 touchdown passes in 2010, which tied with Houston for the worst showing in the league. Dallas does have one of the top defensive players in the league in outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who led the NFL in sacks in 2010 for the second time in three years.
I
Jason Garrett enters his first full season as Cowboys head coach, and among the players hell be counting is wide receiver Miles Austin.
Nose tackle Jay Ratliff and cornerbacks Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins also have been to the Pro Bowl, but both Newman and Jenkins are coming off sub-par seasons. In reality, though, its difficult to envision Dallas going through the kind of season it endured in 2010. After talking about the possibility of playing in the Super Bowl in their own stadium, the Cowboys were slapped back to reality with a humbling 1-7 start. The low point was a 45-7 embarrassment against Green Bay on Sunday Night Football that prompted the firing of Phillips. The Cowboys were much better after that, but they couldnt climb back into the playoff picture after digging such a hole. What the 5-3 finish did, though, was to validate Garretts tougher approach and provide hope for a better 2011.Dolphins vs. Cowboys 13

The Dolphins run defense
The Cowboys run offense
The Dolphins get one final chance to polish up their running game before the Sept. 12 regular season opener against New England, and the Cowboys should provide a good test. Dallas ranked 12th in the league in run defense and returns its nucleus, which starts up front with Pro Bowl nose tackle Jay Ratliff. In the running game, the linebacking corps is led by Bradie James. For the Dolphins, the primary objective just might be to continue the jelling process on the offensive line particularly the right side of guard Vernon Carey and tackle Marc Colombo. The game also presents one last chance for rookie center Mike Pouncey to get himself ready for the Patriots.
The Dolphins run offense
The Dolphins are shooting to become a top five defense in 2011 and it all starts with stopping the run. In Dallas, the Dolphins face a good final test before the start of the regular season because of the presence of speedy running back Felix Jones and promising rookie DeMarco Murray. The Dallas offensive line has undergone some changes and it will be interesting to watch the battle up front. The Dolphins defensive line is among the deepest in the NFL and guys like Randy Starks, Paul Soliai, Kendall Langford and Jared Odrick should prove a handful for the Cowboys front five.

MARLON MOORE
One of the positions where Head Coach Tony Sparano might face his toughest roster decisions is at wide receiver, and the Dallas game could wind up being the difference. That means the pressure will be on young receivers like Clyde Gates, Marlon Moore, Phillip Livas and Julius Pruitt. Tonights game also offers one last chance for Chad Henne to get himself ready for the regular season opener, although hes not likely to play very long. The Cowboys pass rush presents a tough challenge, especially if sack specialist DeMarcus Ware sees a lot of action. Another player to watch on the Dallas defense is linebacker Sean Lee, who had a big game (two sacks, one fumble recovery) when the Dolphins faced the Cowboys in last years preseason.SEAN LEE
The Dolphins pass offense
Dallas third-string quarterback Stephen McGee played the entire game when the Dolphins faced the Cowboys in last years preseason finale, so they should be prepared to see a lot of him again tonight, although its also possible that Tony Romo and/or Jon Kitna will get some action as well. The guy to watch in the Dallas passing game, though, is second-year wide receiver Dez Bryant. The Cowboys are going with first-round pick Tyron Smith at right tackle, and it will be interesting to watch him in action. The Dolphins have a deep group of cornerbacks and the battle for roster spots and playing time could be affected by tonights game. That means players like Nolan Carroll, Jimmy Wilson and Benny Sapp will be in the spotlight.TYRON SMITH

Special TeamsThe new kickoff rule (from the 35-yard line instead of the 30) has created a stir because some fear it will take kick returns out of the game, but Head Coach Tony Sparano said he has had Dan Carpenter kick high and short at times in the preseason to get some work in coverage. It will be interesting to see which approach Sparano chooses tonight. In the return game, tonights game offers the opportunity for players (Phillip Livas) to perhaps catch the coaches attention and earn a role on the team. With Carpenter, punter Brandon Fields and long-snapper John Denney, the Dolphins are set in the kicking game and tonight will just be about sharpening their skills for the regular season opener. The Cowboys, on the other hand, were far from set in their kicking game as they headed into their third preseason game after the signing of veteran Shayne Graham gave them four placekickers on the roster. Dallas does have one of the best punters in the league in Australian native Mat McBriar and a big-time punt returner in Dez Bryant.dolphins.com Dolphins vs. Cowboys 19

Cowboys EditionDallas four victories in the five preseason meetings between the teams were decided by three points or less.
The teams meeting in 1973 was the seventh of the preseason that year for the Dolphins, who opened with a 14-3 victory over College All-Stars at Chicago.
The 27 points scored by Dallas in last years meeting represents the most allowed by the Dolphins in the preseason under Head Coach Tony Sparano.
The starting right guard for Dallas in last years preseason meeting was Pat McQuistan, who was traded to the Dolphins three days later and ended up appearing in all 16 regular season games for Miami with eight starts.
This will be only the second time in six preseason meetings that the teams have faced each other in Miami.
This marks the third time that the Dolphins have closed their preseason schedule with a game against Dallas. In addition to 2010, the Dolphins also ended their 1973 preseason with a game at Dallas (26-23 loss).

In this exclusive column for Playbook, Head Coach Tony Sparano talks about a variety of topics from the make-up of his team to the improvement of Chad Henne to some of the young players who have now matured into veteransQ. Youve gone 7-9 in back-to-back seasons. Tell us what makes you believe that this team will be different.TS: I just see a different group of people right now. In both of those 7-9 seasons, we lost several close games that could have done wonders for our football team. I see things differently this year. I really believe we have some closers on our team, guys who can really make a difference in close games, players like Kevin Burnett and Jason Taylor and adding a Reggie Bush into the mix. Having a Marc Colombo in the huddle will really make a big difference to your team. Having these closers might put you over the edge in some of those close games and it could put us over the top at the end.
your expectations of this player, and does the fact that his brother accomplished so much as a rookie in Pittsburgh make it easier or more difficult for Mike?TS: My expectations are high. When you take a player in the first round and hes an offensive lineman, the expectations have to be high. Some people say you shouldnt take an offensive lineman in the first round. Weve taken Jake Long high and now weve taken Mike Pouncey high. Every indicator I have tells me Mike is going to play like a first-round selection. I really like this guy. I like the way he approaches the game. As far as his brother goes, it can only help Mike. Sometimes you gain experience through other peoples experiences and his brothers experience in this league can only help Mike. I know his brother share things with him. They play the same position and they play against some of the same people. That can only help him.
Q. For the most part, the decision was made to forego high-priced older free agents for young, promising players. What factors contributed to that decision?TS: You have to be selective in the veteran
players you bring on your team. I used to call the young players we brought in here the JV, but now we call them the varsity. When you look at guys like Davone Bess and Phillip Merling and Chad Henne and Kendall Langford and Vontae Davis and Sean Smith, they were all kids when we brought them in here and now they are all threeand four-years players. Theyve played a lot. To think those players arent veteran players is a mistake. I felt like to bring in the 10- or 12-year player at this point just to bring them in would be a mistake when I have these younger players who have played a lot of football. That being said, we did bright in some older veterans but we believe they were the right players to fit into this mix, players like Jason Taylor and Marc Colombo and Kevin Burnett. These players add a dimension to our team.
Newcomers like Reggie Bush could make the difference for the Dolphins in close games.
ly do. From all the signs that Ive seen, I see a different level of confidence. I see a different swagger and purpose about him. All of that is positive. A lot of that has to do with the commitment the kid made this offseason from a leadership standpoint and how hard he worked.
Q. Given that there was no offseason training program, how long will it take Brian Dabolls playbook to be 100 percent implemented in the Dolphins offense?TS: I think by game one, well have most of our offense in. There are things that we are still going to hold. Our goal all along was to push the install to our players and then pull back by eliminating the things that we believe dont best fit their skill level. I would say approaching New England well have 70 percent of what weve installed. That should work fine.
Q. Do you have a total feel for how you want to implement Reggie Bush into this offense or will it be something that just evolves?TS: No, I have a good feel for him. I had this
Q. Your gut feeling on what you expect from Chad Henne this season?TS: I expect him to have a big season, I realdolphins.com
vision when we got him. He can carry the ball on every down, so thats an easy way to get him touches. But there are a lot of different ways to get him touches and were going to use those ways to create matchup problems for the teams we are playing.
Q. You have said in the past that each team has its own unique personality. What do you see as the personality of this team?TS: Thats a good question. I think this team likes to attack fear. Whenever I have put this team through a sticky situation in practice, they have attacked it. That separates them from some of the other teams Ive had. Some teams will go backwards. I think this team right here is pretty daring.Dolphins vs. Cowboys 31

In 2009, Sparano accomplished the difficult task of balancing the need to add youth to his squad while keeping the Dolphins in the thick of the playoff hunt. Like he did with quarterback Chad Henne, who won seven of his 13 overall starts in his first season seeing regular action under center, Sparano furthered the growth of fellow second-year players Davone Bess, who led the team in receptions, Jake Long, who was named to his second consecutive Pro Bowl squad, defensive ends Kendall Langford and Phillip Merling, as well as Pro Bowl kicker Dan Carpenter. In 2008, Sparanos first year as the Dolphins head coach, he guided the team to a single-season turnaround matched just once in NFL history. Taking over a 1-15 squad from a year earlier, he led the Dolphins to an 11-5 record and the AFC East title. eff Ireland was named the Dolphins general manager on Jan. 2, 2008. He joined the club after a seven-year stint (2001-07) with the Dallas Cowboys, including his last three seasons there as the teams vice president of college and pro scouting. In his role with the Dolphins, Ireland not only is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the college and pro personnel departments, but also helps manage the teams salary cap and player contracts. He supervises all scouting efforts that relate to the college draft, free agency, the Canadian Football League, and personnel of the other 31 NFL teams. Ireland works hand in hand with Head Coach Tony Sparano in implementing a personnel plan to build the Dolphins into a championship-caliber team. In Irelands three seasons in Miami, he already has seen some of his acquisitions play a key role in the development of the team. Last season, Jake Long made the Pro Bowl for the third consecutive year, while Cameron Wake and Randy Starks blossomed into Pro Bowl performers for the first time. Veteran acquisitions such as Brandon Marshall, Karlos Dansby and Richie Incognito were major contributors to the Dolphins, while rookie draft choice Koa Misi was a starter for the team all season. Following the 2010 season, Ireland significantly upgraded the teams offense through the college draft.34 Finsiders Playbook

awn Aponte, entering her second season with the Miami Dolphins, joined the team on Feb. 1, 2010, bringing with her a wealth of football experience at the team and league level. Aponte works closely with General Manager Jeff Ireland on football administrative matters and serves as the teams chief contract negotiator. She is responsible for the management and strategic planning of the Dolphins salary cap, negotiating and drafting player contracts and overseeing the football operations budgets. Aponte also serves as the teams liaison on league affairs. A veteran football executive, Aponte joined the Dolphins after spending the 2009 season as vice president of football administration for the Cleveland Browns. In her role with the Browns, Apontes primary responsibilities included player contract negotiations, salary cap management, player cost budgeting, league compliance and assisting in other legal matters. Aponte joined the Browns organization in 2009 after spending the previous three years at the NFL office, where she served on the Leagues Management Council as the vice president of labor finance. In her position at the NFL Management Council, Aponte represented the 32 clubs in dealings with the NFL Players Association and Class Counsel on salary cap and other labor-related matters. Among other things, she also dealt with the clubs on CBA, salary cap and player contract matters.Dolphins vs. Cowboys 35

Nose tackle Paul Soliai looking to build on breakout 2010 seasonBY ANDY KENT
P
aul Soliais journey from unproven rookie defensive tackle to franchise player for the Miami Dolphins has been anything but easy. But in the end, both Soliai and his head coach for all but his rookie season, Tony Sparano, have learned a lot about the fourth-round pick out of Utah. Sparano also learned a lot about himself and how best to work with players like Soliai when it comes to their development. During Miamis 1-15 season in 2007, Soliai managed just three tackles in eight games as a reserve. He was inactive for the final three games, and then in Sparanos first year at the helm in 2008 he did not leave a

The 6-foot-4, 355-pound native of American Samoa was suspended twice for violating team regulations and had some discipline problems with his weight, but Sparano was reluctant to toss him to the wayside. I never really came close to giving up on him, Sparano said. In fact, it was kind of the other way. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt because there were flashes there of things that you saw that maybe you knew you couldnt find out there easily. That was probably what kept him around at that particular time. It was just the flashes. Paul is a good kid, he really is a good guy, so we hoped that we could just get through to this guy. Some guys its important to and some guys maybe its not important to and in this case it became pretty important to the guy. Hes really has done a nice job right now. As one of only two draft picks remaining from that 07 class, Soliai knows how close he came to being jettisoned by the Dolphins. He also knows how difficult it is to catch on as a 3-4 defensive tackle in the NFL. However, what is more important right now to Soliai is repaying Sparano for the confidence he showed in him and the commitment he

made to giving him a chance to excel in Miami. He is using those early speed bumps as motivation to reach the next level. Soliai got off to a good start last season after taking over as the starting nose tackle in Week 2. He finished with 39 tackles, two sacks, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery. The main thing I have done differently is being a professional, being a grownup and trying to earn the trust of my coaches and teammates, said Soliai, who credits former Dolphins nose tackle Jason Nose tackle Paul Soliai says becoming more of a profesFerguson for helping him. My rookie year sional is what helped him elevate his game. and the first two years I wasnt really acting like a professional. So far in training camp he has not shown any with me, it was always up and down with his signs of slowing down and has given rookie body weight, Sparano said. You could see it center and 2011 first-round pick Mike Pouncey during the week in practice and I could tell a rude welcome to the league. when he was heavy and I could tell when he Perhaps the most important change Soliai was right. You could just see it.
Sometimes hed be on the ground and he wouldnt make the hustle plays that Paul makes now. I think once he figured out that his body weight was critical to his performance, all of a sudden some things started to happen a little easier. And now its become a little bit of a way of life to him. Sparano has seen Soliai arrive at the facility earlier than he used to and stay in the building later working on his conditioning and his study habits. He also has noticed Soliai taking care of himself better off the field and changing his eating habits. Just because he had a breakout season last year, earned a big pay raise and can be thought of among the top tier of nose tackles doesnt mean Soliai will become complacent. He meets with Sparano regularly to be reminded of what it took for him to get to this point, and he admits he still has a lot of room for improvement, specifically when it comes to being consistent. Theres a lot of room for me to improve and a high ceiling for me, Soliai said. Thats all I want to do is just build up every year. My goal is to just be better than last year and be a better baller than I was last year.

COMMUNITY

Womens group keeps growingBy Andy Kents if Jeanette Sparano doesnt already do enough to help the South Florida community, her latest venture is sure to yield even more praise. The wife of Head Coach Tony Sparano spearheaded the launch of the Miami Dolphins Womens Organization, rallying the wives of other coaches and players together for charitable causes. We had been thinking about it when we first got here, Tony and I, said Jeanette, who was recognized in April of 2010 as one of 12 Women of the Year by the 1000+ Club To Benefit Cancer, Inc. The girls were really involved in a lot, but it was kind of one girl would take on an initiative and get six or seven involved and it was really splintered. Last summer I met with Kara Ross in New York and we decided to formalize it with the name the Miami Dolphins Womens Organization. We have a mission statement, we have a Web site thats just for the women involved. We have an advisory board that meets regularly and we meet with the girls as a whole and set our agenda for the year. Already the organization has established charities with which it works regularly and is doing a lot of work with area senior centers and elementary, middle and high schools in Dade and Broward counties. Jeanette Sparano confirmed that there are plans to expand up into Palm Beach County as well. Among the more notable institutions benefiting from the groups efforts are the Jackson Memorial Childrens Hospital, Joe DiMaggios Childrens Hospital in Broward and the Chris Evert Childrens Hospital. As it rolls on and we see a need, like when the earthquake hit in Haiti, we get involved, Jeanette said. We organized the drop-off point at the stadium (for food and medical supplies). We do Papa Johns Pizza and cupcake parties in schools to try to encourage the kids

to do well. If they dont get into trouble and if theyre being respectful to their classmates and their teachers well bring TD and the cheerleaders and some players. We dont go by grade point average, we go by improvement. The organization continues to grow as more and more players wives and coaches wives sign on. It has become one of the first things a new coachs wife will ask about, having heard about the groups involvement with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. On Sept. 21, the women will be handing out the Sun Life Rising Star grants on the West Coast of Florida and will also be helping out on the backpack and school supplies giveaway. Around the holidays the organization will help with Thanksgiving and Christmas events, like the one in December where about 175 kids come out and shop off of their wish list. See COMMUNITY, page 53

It has grown quite a bit and we did have a very positive response and a lot of girls righta off the bat, Jeanette said. But as new wives come in they ask about it, so theyre talking about it with friends from other teams. Based on how far the organization has come in a year, it sounds like people will be talking about it quite often.

This edition: Wide receiversDAVONE BESSCurrent star Who is the toughest cornerback you faced?Bess: I would go with Darrelle Revis because hes got the entire cover package speed, hands and athleticism. Duper: I cant pick just one, so it would have to be Mike Haynes and Lester Hayes of the Oakland Raiders. Haynes was the best cover guy with his long arms and he could run, and Hayes was right behind him with his sure hands.
Current and former Dolphins stars share their views on different football topicsFormer star
Mark Duper
What receiver did you look up to growing up, and why?Bess: Jerry Rice just because of his work ethic. He was a guy that was not highly rated coming out of college and went to a small school (Mississippi Valley State) and he busted his tail and took pride in working hard and being the best. Duper: Nat Moore because he played with the Dolphins and he taught me almost 99.9 percent of the things to do on the field in tough situations.
What is your favorite pass route to run?Bess: Any route that gets me open and gets me the
ball.Duper: My favorite routes to run were a post, a takeoff and the deep comebacks, but the ones I caught the most were the comebacks and takeoffs.
What was your most memorable catch?Bess: Probably the New England Patriots game last year in the corner of the end zone (a 21-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Thigpen). Duper: There are a bunch of them, but Id have to say the one against the Rams in overtime (Dec. 14, 1986, a 37-31 victory). We got the ball and Dan (Marino) threw it up in the end zone behind the cornerback and I didnt get my hands up until the ball was right in the back of his head and I snatched it up over his head and came up with it in the end zone (a 20-yard TD reception).
What is your best asset as a receiver?Bess: Being quarterback-friendly and knowing how to read coverage. Duper: I could catch the football very well and when I got behind you and the ball was thrown properly the ball was my ball and not your ball. Having good hands on the deep ball and being able to run routes were my greatest assets.dolphins.com Dolphins vs. Cowboys 57

he first member of the Dolphins to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Paul Warfield sandwiched two stints with the Cleveland Browns (1964-69 and 1976-77) around a five-year career with the Dolphins. After spending his first six seasons in the NFL with the Browns, Warfield was acquired by Miami in January of 1970 in exchange for a first-round pick in the upcoming draft. In his five seasons with the Dolphins, Warfield had 156 receptions for 3,355 yards (21.5 average) and 33 TDs. When he left Miami following the 1974 season, Warfield ranked first on the teams career receiving yards and receiving touchdowns lists, while he was third on the Dolphins all-time list for receptions. His 21.5 average per reception is still the highest in Miami history. His career receiving totals in the NFL are 427 receptions for 8,565 yards (20.1 average) and 85 TDs. At the time of his retirement following the 1977 season, Warfields career catches were tied for the 17th-most in NFL history, his career receiving yards were the sixth-most and his 85 touchdown catches were tied for the third-highest total in the leagues history. A member of both the 72 and 73 Super Bowl championship teams, he was selected to play in the Pro Bowl all five years he was with the Dolphins, in addition to being named to three Pro Bowl squads with the Browns. In 1974, shortly after the Dolphins won Super Bowl VIII, Warfield and teammates Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick made what were then surprising decisions. They left the Dolphins at the conclusion of the season for what appeared to be more lucrative pastures with the Toronto Northmen of World Football League.58 Finsiders Playbook
The Northmen moved to Memphis without playing a game in Toronto. Warfield played the 1975 season with the Memphis Southmen, before finishing his career with Cleveland. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 1983. This issue: UDONIS HASLEM, Miami Heat forwardHow long have you been a fan of the Miami Dolphins, and how did you become one?Haslem: My whole life. Growing up in Miami you really didnt have much of a choice. You rooted for the Hurricanes and the Dolphins and I really didnt have a choice but to root for the home team like my whole family.
What is your favorite Dolphins memory, and why?Haslem: My favorite memory is from 1993, the Thanksgiving game against the Cowboys. The Dolphins were losing and were kicking about a 41-yard field goal to win the game and the field goal was blocked and everybody just watched the ball and Leon Lett tried to recover it and the Dolphins recovered it on the 1yard line and ended up kicking the field goal to win the game. He didnt even have to touch the ball. He should have just left it alone. We were watching it as a family on television and it was funny. We laughed and celebrated.
How often do you try to make it to Dolphins games, and is there anyone on the team you are very friendly with?Haslem: I try to get to Dolphins games when I can but its difficult during basketball season. I had a suite a few years ago, but we were just so busy with basketball, so my parents and friends of the family ended up using it a lot more than I did. But I usually make it to about 3-5 games a year, but its just so difficult with basketball.
