ADMISSIONS PROCEDURE AND SCHOOL POLICIES

The majority of children at Dolphin join Nursery from the age of three or Reception in the autumn term following their fourth birthday. However, entry is possible at any time where spaces are available and we can also offer waiting list places.

Step 1: We strongly recommend that you attend one of our regular tours to see Dolphin during a normal working day. This provides an opportunity to observe the children during lessons, meet members of staff and learn more about our philosophy and curriculum. We also offer termly Open Mornings, the dates of which are published on our Website. For information on tour availability please contact our Registrar, Helen Waneis, who will be happy to help, on 0118 934 1277.

Step 2: Complete the Registration Form, which can be found in this booklet and return it to us together with the administration fee indicated on the form. This can be done well in advance of the proposed entry date.

Step 3: An Early Years child could be offered a place immediately if one is available as there is no formal assessment. For other children, on receipt of the application form you will be contacted to arrange a mutually convenient date for your child to attend an Assessment Day. This is an opportunity for us to get to know each other, and to assess your child’s potential, but will not put them under any undue pressure. It also gives your son or daughter the opportunity to see if he or she likes Dolphin and can, if necessary, reassure them about changing schools. If you are currently living abroad, then reports from a previous school could be taken into consideration in lieu of an Assessment Day.

Step 4: A Nursery age child will be invited to attend a familiarisation session during the term before proposed entry. Parents please note that Nursery pupils are part of the Early Years Stage. Although we hope that all pupils will be able to stay with us from 3-13, Early Years pupils are not guaranteed entry into Year One of the main school.

For Reception age children and above, following an Assessment Day, an offer of a place will be made if we feel that the child will flourish and be happy at Dolphin.

Step 5: You will receive formal notification of the place offered and should complete and return the Acceptance Form. To secure the place a deposit of £500 is payable, which is refundable when the child leaves the school.

The school is selective and we will offer places to children who will be able to benefit from the education we provide.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND NEXT SCHOOLS

We are proud of our curriculum with the unique learning opportunities on offer. Dolphin is not a feeder for any particular senior school and we believe that our children are well prepared to meet the challenges of any subsequent school, be it state, grammar or independent.

Over the past ten years more than 90% of our Year Eight leavers secured a place at an independent senior school, with a small percentage opting for state comprehensive and grammar schools. Common Entrance and Scholarship results over the same period have seen 100% of Year Eight leavers, who have opted for an independent senior education, securing a place at their first choice of school. Of those, on average, a third have done so with a scholarship.

For Year Six leavers the notable differences are that numbers of the leavers secure a place at a grammar school and a large proportion go on to state comprehensive schools.

Recent destinations have included: Abingdon, The Abbey, Bradfield College, Claires Court, Gillotts, The Holt, Holyport College, Leighton Park, Luckley House, The Piggott, Queen Anne’s, Reading Blue Coat, Reading Grammar, Shiplake College, St. Helen & St. Katharine, St Joseph’s College, St Paul’s, Waingels College, Sir William Borlase and Wellington College.

For ten years we opted to participate in the national SATS Key Stage 2 testing in Year Six. Our results were excellent, the vast majority of children achieving the highest possible level in English, Maths and Science. At Dolphin, we feel that training for exams can result in shallow learning and that the breadth of the education we offer is not assessed by SATS and so we no longer undertake this testing. Those children who choose to leave us at the end of Year Six do so having had numerous opportunities and experiences which will influence the quality of their learning for the rest of their lives.

The Dolphin School education in Years Seven and Eight follows the Common Entrance curriculum, which provides not only the basis of entry to an independent senior school, but also a strong foundation for all GCSE courses taken at any subsequent senior school. Dolphins have a strong record of winning academic, art, music and sports scholarships to a wide variety of independent senior schools. By the time they are thirteen, Dolphins have also developed the social and leadership skills highly sought after by senior schools and which make them leaders in later life. Indeed we are very proud of the career successes of our former pupils.

Please see our website for details of scholarship successes and destinations of previous years’ leavers.
