Wrigley Values

MAKING A DIFFERENCE THE WRIGLEY WAY

3

More than a century ago, the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company was founded

by an entrepreneur who understood the importance of respecting

others. He knew that the long-term success of the company would

hinge on having positive, mutually beneficial relationships with

Wrigley associates, customers, and the communities in which we did

business. This simple philosophy serves as the foundation of our

Wrigley Values and our “Wrigley Way” of doing business.

More than four generations of Wrigley associates have embodied this

standard and continue to preserve our heritage. Whether you visit

Chicago, Munich, Moscow or Hong Kong, our shared values are

demonstrated in the way we create a positive working environment

based upon the principles of treating all people with trust, dignity

and respect. You will also see examples of Wrigley’s efforts to

support the global communities where we live and work, invest

in innovative manufacturing programs that both protect the

environment and conserve resources, and create programs that

nurture and provide development opportunities for our Wrigley team.

Since our founding in 1891, the Wrigley Company has grown and

evolved significantly. We work in a fast-paced and dynamic

marketplace that requires a sense of urgency, measured risk taking,

outstanding performance and a healthy respect for competition.

This is the hallmark of a vibrant organization. Still, we believe the

Wrigley Values are paramount to our success and just as meaningful,

if not more, than they were in the beginning. The “soul” of the

Company is protected by more than 14,000 Wrigley associates

committed to conducting themselves with the highest standards of

leadership, honesty and integrity in a complex and rapidly changing

business world.

This is a source of great pride and, we believe, a significant

competitive advantage. Through this report, we are pleased to share

with you a few examples of our “Wrigley Way” in action.

Respectfully,

The Wrigley Executive Leadership Team

Trust, Dignity and RespectWrigley’s founder, William Wrigley Jr., knew that treating

people with trust, dignity and respect would not only help

build solid relationships, but would also help build the

business. Wrigley’s dynamic team of global associates

continues to follow our founder’s ideal by cultivating strong

relationships with each other, our business partners and

with consumers around the world who enjoy our great-

tasting confectionery products.

Partnerships for GrowthThe Wrigley Company’s success is in the hands of the

people entrusted to run the day-to-day business and deliver

the highest quality Wrigley products – from our research

and development labs to our factory floors to retail shelves

around the world.

Because we know our associates drive our business, we’re

proud of our legacy for pioneering people programs and

policies that foster a positive and diverse work place

where everyone is treated fairly. In 1919, the Employee

Stock Purchase Plan – among the first of its kind – was

introduced, giving associates a convenient way to buy stock

in the Company through payroll deductions. This early

program gave Wrigley associates a way to invest in the

future of the Company they were helping to build. Today we

continue to encourage employee stock ownership through

numerous programs. With more than 90 percent of Wrigley

associates holding stock, employees own close to 2 percent

of the Company.

A CULTURE OF RESPECT

5

The Wrigley team is a diverse group of more than 14,000 multi-culturalassociates working worldwide. We are united by a commitment to upholdingWrigley’s business standards and providing consumers with a broad array ofdelicious, high quality confectionery products.

80985_Body 6/28/06 4:14 AM Page 5

In 1924, the Wrigley Company became the first business in

Chicago – and possibly the United States – to give all

employees Saturdays off, a privilege traditionally enjoyed

only by business executives.

As far back as the 1950s, the Wrigley Company saw the

value of offering people the opportunity to take time from

work without giving up their jobs. The Company’s Leave of

Absence policy was introduced long before the government

mandated this type of benefit with the passage of the

Family Medical Leave Act in 1993.

The Wrigley Company continues to establish people-focused

policies and programs, not because they are trendy or

anticipate legal mandates, but because they are fair and

make good business sense. The department responsible for

developing these programs is called People, Learning and

Development (PLD).

The PLD group is committed to fostering and maintaining a

high-performance organization by encouraging lifelong

learning and leadership among all Wrigley associates;

providing programs such as job sharing and compressed

work schedules that allow flexibility; developing programs

that encourage individual and organizational growth; and

offering benefits that recognize and reward all Wrigley

associates for their contributions to the Company’s success,

including the annual bonus program tied to business

metrics like volume, sales and earnings increases.

A CULTURE OF RESPECT

Fostering Diversity and OfferingEqual OpportunitiesWrigley’s rich culture is influenced by an international work

backgrounds and experiences is vital to Wrigley’s success as

a global organization.

Hand-in-hand with its geographic expansion, Wrigley is

run its businesses. From Guangzhou, China to Poznan,

Poland, Wrigley facilities and businesses are operated by

talented Wrigley associates who know and embody the local

community and culture. These local connections have helped

Wrigley reach consumers and build brands that have

become part of everyday life in countries all over the globe.

They have also created development opportunities for

talented Wrigley associates around the world and made our

team stronger by expanding our horizons, providing

opportunities to learn and offering new perspectives.

The health, safety and well-being of our associates is a

priority for the Wrigley Company. To that end, the Company

has created a Global Occupational Health and Safety

program intended to:

• Prevent illness and injury

• Promote health and safety among associates, their families and the broader community

• Protect associates from environmental andoccupational hazards through thorough risk assessments

• Enhance the physical, mental and social well-beingof our associates

Occupational Health & SafetyIt is Wrigley’s firm and continuing policy to aggressively

promote safe and sound practices that help prevent job-

related accidents or injury. Wrigley locations around the

world are required to meet established Company safety

standards, which frequently exceed locally regulated

requirements. Whether it’s assessing the ergonomics of a

work process and reducing risk through on-site education

and stretching programs, or looking at quality of l ight in a

work space and improving it through the use of new

equipment, the environmental, safety and health

professionals at Wrigley are committed to maintaining

healthy and productive work environments.

A POSITIVE WORKPLACE

As the foundation ofour Global OccupationalHealth program, wepartner with local healthcare professionals toidentify areas oftargeted risk in aspecific communityand to create programsto eliminate or reducerisk for associates andtheir families. 9

With production facilities in 14 countries, health issues

facing Wrigley associates can vary widely. Based on World

Health Organization guidelines, Wrigley has established

Global Occupational Health Standards, which form the basis

of programs that help keep our associates and their families

healthy. These programs emphasize awareness, education

and service programs.

Examples of health awareness and promotion programs

customized by location include HIV/AIDS awareness

campaigns in Nairobi, Kenya; awareness and prevention

programs for tuberculosis in the Philippines; and testing

and prevention programs focusing on reducing cholesterol

and lowering high blood pressure in the United States.

Wrigley’s occupational health nurses around the world act

as advocates for associates. They help associates address

health and wellness issues, promote healthy lifestyles and,

in the event that an associate is returning to work after an

illness or injury, assist with re-entry and optimum health

rehabilitation.

A POSITIVE WORKPLACE

As part of Wrigley’seffort to promote, protect and encouragethe health and safetyof our associates,Wrigley factories andoffices offer preventivemedical care and healthpromotion programs.

Under Wrigley’s Travel Health program, the Company helps

Wrigley associates stay healthy while traveling for business.

Comprehensive services inform associates about the

immunizations needed for healthy travel, and provide all

travel health immunizations at no cost. Wrigley also

provides universal access to quality healthcare through

an international service that connects associates with an

appropriate health care provider, no matter where they are

in the world. Another service provides travel-related safety

updates to all registered Wrigley travelers – with news on

anything that might interrupt travel or present a safety risk.

These are just a few examples of the programs established

and maintained by Wrigley to ensure the safety and health

of associates worldwide.

The Environmental, Safety, Health and Security team circles the globe performingsafety and health audits at all Wrigley factories.

Our environmental commitment includes community

involvement and affil iation with environmental

organizations around the world. When the volunteer

environmental organization “Keep America Beautiful”

debuted in 1953, the Wrigley Company signed on as a

charter member, and today remains actively involved with

this national public service organization. Internationally,

Wrigley is affil iated with Britain’s EnCams organization,

which is responsible for the “Keep Britain Tidy” campaign;

with An Taisce, a leading environmental organization in

Ireland; and with “Keep Australia Beautiful,” a program

focusing on environmental education in schools and

communities in New South Wales.

Education and awareness programs sponsored by the

Company and Wrigley associates include Wrigley’s Greenup®

Program targeted at teens in the United States, the

National Spring Clean and Green Schools program in Ireland

and the launch of an anti-littering badge with the Girl

Guides in the U.K.

At our factories, Wrigley observes rigorous environmental

policies and maintains these facilities to the highest

standards of compliance around the globe. Wrigley

standards are often more stringent than those of local

governments.

Continuously improving our environmental performance

requires that we monitor a wide variety of indicators. To

this end, we track key metrics to assess our performance

including energy use, water use and discharges, waste

generation, recycling/reuse and air emissions.

A DUTY TO THE ENVIRONMENT

In 1933, Wrigley beganwhat may have beenthe world’s first litterprevention campaignby imprinting properdisposal messages onthe label of every stick.Today, our packagingaround the worldfeatures either anillustration or wordingdescribing the properway to dispose of ourproduct.

13

80985_Body 6/28/06 4:14 AM Page 13

All of our factory management systems and guidelines are

based on the International Organization for Standardization’s

(ISO) 14001 standard, one of the world’s most widely

recognized environmental management benchmarks.

A number of Wrigley production facilities have achieved

the prestigious ISO 14001 certification, and all others are

working toward this goal.

In addition to striving for such certifications, we continue

to pursue innovative programs that help promote energy

conservation, waste reduction and water conservation.

One key company-wide program is our Pollution

Prevention/Energy Efficiency (P2/E2) initiative. It not only

looks at ways to conserve our resources, reduce waste and

energy usage, but also results in responsible environmental

management practices and significant cost savings.

A DUTY TO THE ENVIRONMENT

14 Our commitment to the environment is demonstrated through a variety ofprograms including educating local children about natural sciences andconservation, and the planting of tree saplings at factories and offices aroundthe world.

Our recently opened Global Innovation Center’s pilot plant rooftop is coveredin a brown moss that helps conserve energy and aids in insulation.

80985_Body 7/13/06 4:13 AM Page 14

One result of our P2/E2 initiative is an innovative way to

return non-potable water from our production process safely

back into the environment. This water typically contains

sugar and sweeteners from our production process, which

cannot be released directly into the local municipal water

reclamation district, but can be used as a key ingredient for

local composting processors. This sugared water is being

given to local farmers in Taipei, Taiwan and Gainesville,

Georgia who use it as an excellent carbon source in their

composting process. This results in a rich fertil izer, thereby

completing a natural recycling process.

In Asquith, Australia, our Wrigley facility partnered with the

Technical and Further Education Institute of New South

Wales (TAFE NSW) to implement a comprehensive

environmental awareness-training program for all

associates. The results of the program have been impressive,

with substantial reductions in water and energy

consumption and carbon dioxide emissions – leading to

recognition of the facility’s program as an example in best

practices. This location has also been used as a positive

water conservation case study by Sydney Water Corporation

in its promotion of responsible water use.

15

The Wrigley Company is committed to ethical business

practices, honesty, full compliance with applicable laws and

high standards of ethical behavior. This is the Wrigley Way

of doing business, and our associates worldwide continue

to uphold these standards.

The cornerstone of our ethics and compliance program is

the Wrigley Code of Business Conduct, which contains the

values, principles and practices that guide us. The code

provides clear definitions of the essential attributes

necessary for good business.

While we believe our compliance program is sound and

our associates' commitment to doing the right thing

unwavering, the Company has taken its ethics program to

the next level in recognition of the enhanced scrutiny given

to corporations, and to ensure compliance with applicable

regulations.

A new online training program entitled, “The Wrigley Way –

Doing the Right Thing,” builds upon our Code of Conduct

and helps associates understand the Company’s

expectations for business behavior and how they must

continue to conduct business in full compliance with the

law. In addition, associates are required to complete

supplementary courses in subjects that pertain to their job

responsibilities and to sign an annual affidavit stating their

commitment to uphold the Company’s ethics.

Every business decision or action can carry important

ethical and legal consequences. Wrigley associates have

a responsibility to our shareholders, business partners,

customers, consumers and each other to support the

Company’s commitment to honest business ethics

everywhere in the world our business takes us.

A business associate of William Wrigley Jr. once declared

him “a man of the people,” a title Mr. Wrigley backed with

action. During the Depression, Mr. Wrigley was distressed at

the sight of men seeking refuge from the elements on the

underground level of Michigan Avenue. In 1931, he gave a

downtown Chicago building to a charitable organization,

the Salvation Army, to be used as a shelter.

Generations of Wrigley associates and the Company have

carried this legacy of community involvement forward –

either by donating their time and experience, or by

providing financial assistance or in-kind donations.

In 1987, the Company formalized its charitable giving by

establishing the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company Foundation. The

mission of the Foundation is to develop today’s youth into

tomorrow’s leaders, with an emphasis on educational

initiatives and programs that encourage wellness and

diversity. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded

more than $30 million in grants to charitable, non-profit

organizations.

Wrigley affil iate companies also fund local programs.

Wrigley Confectionery Company in China established the

Wrigley Hope School in 2002. It was constructed in a poor

rural area to provide educational opportunities for local

children. Starting in 2003 and continuing today, 20 mini-

libraries were donated to schools without adequate

educational resources. Wrigley China has also created

partnerships with local organizations to sponsor school

events that teach children to be leaders in their

communities in the effort to reduce litter and waste.

A COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY

Wrigley’s commitment tosupporting educationalopportunities includesmore than 45 years ofproviding scholarshipassistance through theUnited Negro CollegeFund in the UnitedStates, providingeducational resourcesto disadvantagedchildren in rural areasof China and Tibet, andsupporting Germany’s“Youth Goes Future”program, an educationalinitiative affordingstudents the opportunityto partner with industryleaders and gainvaluable businessskills and experience.

The Matching Grant Program, supported by the Wrigley

Company Foundation, encourages and supports charitable

giving by full-time employees, retirees and directors to

eligible organizations that have a positive influence on

their communities and have special meaning for them.

Under the program, the Foundation will match contributions

on a 2-for-1 basis, up to $1,500 a year.

Associates can also apply for Wrigley Associates Volunteer

Effort (WAVE) Grants that will award $250 to eligible

organizations, after an associate completes at least 25

hours of volunteer service. The WAVE program recognizes

that donating personal time is just as important as

committing financial support and should be encouraged

and rewarded as well.

Wrigley associates often work together on group volunteer

projects in their local communities. These projects span

everything from helping children at a holiday party to tasks

such as cleaning and painting community facilities.

A COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY
