    What's in a Jacket?Plenty, These Days

    By DAVE

In the old days record jacketswere something that held rec-ords. And then the market re-searchers and the design de-partments realized that pack-aging can make a great differ-ence in sales.

And now the extra effort thatgoes into that something extra -special in packaging is a won-der to behold-and especiallywhere rock albums are con-cerned.

In the last few months pack-aging concepts-and the moneyspent executing them-have

FINKLE been staggering. And evidentlyworth it.

Of course, the Rolling Stones'"Their Satanic Majesties Re-quest" (London) with its 3-Dcover, made at a reported costof $25,000, is the most obviousexample of the extent to whichgroups and companies are pre-pared to go to please the pro-spective buyers. (It might beadded that this kind of budgetmay not be required to sell theRolling Stones, etc., albums, butis seemingly well -spent to pro-vide bonuses for the buyer.)

New album product releasedduring and since the Januarydistrib sales convention has nowreached a level that placesUnited Artists Records in itsstrongest market position inseveral years, according to Da-vid Greenman, National AlbumSales Manager.

Greenman noted that therapidly developing sales actionoccurs just prior to the com-pany's gala 10th anniversarycelebration, to be held March13-16 in Miami Beach, imme-diately preceding the annualNARM convention there.

Of particular note at the mo-ment is the label's first albumby Britain's hottest new group,Traffic, originally scheduled forMarch release during the forth-coming convention but nowtabbed for rush release. Titled"Mr. Fantasy," the album hasbeen serviced this week afterinitial distributor demandbrought about one of the fast-est album processing jobs inUnited Artists' history - lessthan 10 days from receipt ofBritish tapes to first deliveriesof the product in California.San Francisco has already re-

ordered three times in one day,Greenman said, and simmeringexcitement has now reached anational spread status.

Two other groups are keep-ing UA's promo and sales staffbusy across the country. Thefieldmen report a strong initialimpact for the recently releaseddebut album of the Hassles, the label's new Americangroup, with a similar patternshaping up for "Spencer DavisGreatest Hits," latest set bythe British group.
