Does NX Convergent Modeling have
a Future in ShipBuilding?
NX Ship User Meeting, Sandvika, 08.06.2017
• Convergent modeling lets you work with Parasolid b-rep tools directly on faceted
geometry
• Convergent modeling eliminates the need for time consuming reverse engineering
processes
• The aim of this presentation is to introduce the concept and some simple use cases.
• We would also like to get the discussion and thought processes going in the group.
• We will not be making any conclusions – as this is a new technology and the first
introduction of convergent tools from Siemens
With NX11, Siemens launched a groundbreaking new technology that lets you work directly on faceted geometry
Does NX Convergent Modeling have a future in Ship Building?
Convergent Modeling: A short Background & Introduction
Norwegian Cruise Vessel “Crash landed”
Demonstration #1
The damage sustained by the cruise
vessel “Trollfjord” - the result of a
meeting with the dock in Risøyhamn - will
serve as our convergent use case.
Topics:
• Importing a convergent model
• Interacting with a convergent model
• Creating a Detail design plate
In this demonstration we will import an aft part of a
scanned hull. This will serve as the geometry we
want to limit the pod shape to.
Topics:
• Creation of parametric convergent geometry
• Detail Design Plates based on b-rep/facets
• Limitations in current version(?)
Creation of parametric b-rep geometry following the hull shape of scanned faceted geometry
Demonstration #2
• NX design can work with facets as any other geometry!
• Output from operations is facets (NX 11)
• Direct use of scan and polygon data without conversion
• No need for reverse engineering!
• History based modeling with facet geometry
• Booleans/Trims
• Associative wireframe
Business value
• Accelerate concept to production
workflows through increased use of
polygon/facet data
